Miami Marlins SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) could begin playing catch as early as next week.
Fantasy Tip: Alvarez ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) can be stashed in a DL slot in the majority of formats, but only in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues is he worth taking up a bench spot while injured. He just doesn't strikeout enough batters to make a move the needle in the majority of leagues. Continue to check back for updates on his recovery and return timeline.

Miami Marlins SP Henderson Alvarez (elbow, shoulder) will have his throwing shoulder tested Monday, April 13, along with his elbow.

Miami Marlins SP Henderson Alvarez (elbow) will have an MRI on his right elbow, according to team sources.
Fantasy Tip: This is not good news for Alvarez ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) or the Marlins if the doctors find anything. Jose Fernandez will be back at midseason from Tommy John surgery, but to lose another pitcher would be a big blow to the Marlins' playoff hopes. Keep an eye on this.

Miami Marlins SP Henderson Alvarez has been named the opening day starter.
Fantasy Tip: Alvarez ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) is coming off a very successful 2014 season with 12 wins and a 2.65 ERA. Owners could consider selecting Alvarez in the later rounds of drafts, but he is not a great help in the strikeout category.

Miami Marlins SP Henderson Alvarez's start was cut short by a rain delay Thursday, March 26, in the top of the fourth inning. He allowed two runs on four hits with a walk and strikeout. "He looked good out there today. That's Henderson -- the way he pitched. I was happy with the way he went out there. It's too bad," manager Mike Redmond said. Alvarez added he is 100% ready to go for the start of the season.
Fantasy Tip: Alvarez is a candidate to be the opening day starter for the Marlins, and with an improved offense supporting him, Alvarez has nice upside in three categories. The issue remains his career 4.8 K/9 mark. In shallow formats, it is almost impossible to roster such a low strikeout rate, however he posted a 2.65 ERA and 1.23 WHIP last season through 187 innings. Wins are tough to project, but Alvarez recorded 12 last year pitching for a weaker offensive team.
