Athletics | Henderson Alvarez to resume throwing

Mon, 23 May 2016 17:55:08 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) will resume throwing Tuesday, May 24. He's missed a week after experiencing shoulder discomfort.

Fantasy Tip: Good news for Oakland that the right-hander is able to get back on the mound, though it's still a little concerning that it's taken the former All-Star this long, as his initial timetable had him returning at some point in May. That does not look like it will happen, but Alvarez can certainly help out fantasy teams as soon as he's ready to return. Keep monitoring his progress.

Athletics | Henderson Alvarez in limbo

Wed, 18 May 2016 12:52:27 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Henderson Alvarez's (shoulder) MRI results were inconclusive from his exam Tuesday, May 17, according to manager Bob Melvin. The team is waiting for Dr. James Andrews, who performed the surgery last season, to review the results. The fact that there was no clear indication of a significant injury "does give you some optimism," Melvin said.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez has some fantasy appeal, but he also has a career 4.7 K/9. And while you'll want to keep your expectations in check, Alvarez remains a viable stash option in the majority of leagues. Stay tuned for updates.

Athletics | Henderson Alvarez getting MRI

Tue, 17 May 2016 15:41:04 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) is undergoing an MRI exam on his right shoulder Tuesday, May 17.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez was pitching well on his rehab assignment but experienced soreness in his shoulder during his outing Sunday. It's a shame, too, because he was expected to be ready to make his season debut for the A's this weekend against the Yankees. That's on hold for now, depending on the results of his tests. Alvarez has nice potential as a ground-ball artist at O.co Coliseum, and he's worth stashing in most seasonal leagues despite the setback.

Athletics | Henderson Alvarez has a setback

Mon, 16 May 2016 16:26:03 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) had a setback in his recovery from shoulder surgery and might need an MRI exam on his right shoulder Monday, May 16, or Tuesday, May 17.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez was on track to return from the DL and make his season debut for the A's this weekend, but that'll now have to be pushed back. Despite the setback, Alvarez is a fine starter to stash in deep mixed and AL-only leagues. He was an All-Star for the Marlins in 2014, and his ground-ball profile should play well at O.co Coliseum.

Athletics | Henderson Alvarez getting closer

Fri, 06 May 2016 14:19:13 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) might only need two more minor league rehab assignments before he can join the starting rotation, according to manager Bob Melvin.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez had an All-Star campaign two years ago with the Marlins, and his ground-ball profile should play well at O.Co Coliseum this year. Stash him now if he's available in deep mixed and AL-only formats. Rookie Sean Manaea could be in jeopardy of being sent back to the minors when Alvarez is ready.

Athletics | Henderson Alvarez rehab update

Sun, 01 May 2016 07:59:01 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Henderson Alvarez (sholder) allowed one run on one hit over four innings in a rehab start for Class A Stockton Saturday, April 30, with four strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Although Alvarez is a ground-ball pitcher who will be playing his home games in a pitcher-friendly ballpark this season, he should be viewed as a low-end starting option in mixed fantasy leagues because of his low strikeout totals. If all goes well, he could return to action later this month.

Athletics | Henderson Alvarez pitching next Saturday

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 13:57:23 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) is scheduled to throw four innings or 60 pitches for Class A Stockton in a rehab outing Saturday, April 30.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez has potential to help stabilize your ratios and pad the win column, but his career 4.7 K/9 doesn't do any fantasy favors. View Alvarez as a low-end starter in mixed leagues. Continue to check back for updates as he works his way back from the injury.

Athletics | Henderson Alvarez to rehab this weekend

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 15:40:24 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) is doing flat-ground work with team trainers Wednesday, April 27, and he thinks he'll make another rehab start Saturday, April 30.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez has considerable upside with the A's as more of a ground-ball pitcher that will call pitcher-friendly O.co Coliseum home. Remember that Alvarez went 12-7 with a 2.65 ERA and was an All-Star as recently as 2014 with the Marlins. Stash him now in deeper mixed and AL-only leagues if he's still out there on the waiver wire.

Athletics | Henderson Alvarez continues rehab

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 23:42:35 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) worked two innings in a minor-league rehab assignment Monday, April 25, for Class AAA Nashville. He allowed one hit with one strikeouts in two scoreless frames.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez has allowed two runs - one earned - over five innings with two strikeouts in two rehab appearances so far. Wait until he can officially return to the big club and prove his health in a start or two without any setbacks before plugging him back into the starting lineup.

Athletics | Henderson Alvarez getting velocity up

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 14:50:28 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) was throwing as hard as 94 mph in his start for Class AAA Nashville on Monday, April 25, according to manager Bob Melvin.

Fantasy Tip: This is an excellent sign that Alvarez is on the verge of returning to the major league club, and he appears to be ahead of schedule, as he wasn't really expected back for another month or so. Alvarez will have standout potential in his first year with the Athletics and now might be the time to stash him if he's out there on any waiver wires. He was an All-Star as recent as two seasons ago, remember.
