Colorado Rockies SP Franklin Morales, who has posted a 3.97 ERA over 11 1/3 innings this spring, may have an edge over SP Jordan Lyles for the No. 5 spot in the rotation, because he is out of minor league options. Lyles still has options remaining, so the Rockies could demote him without fear of losing him to another organization.
Fantasy Tip: It doesn't appear that manager Walt Weiss is in a hurry to name a fifth starter and will continue letting these two battle it out. Morales has expressed a strong preference to start, although there is a possibility that Lyles grabs the last spot in the rotation while Morales winds up in the bullpen. Lyles has actually pitched slightly better than Morales (1.13 ERA over eight spring innings), although ERA will not be the sole determining factor for winning the job.

Colorado Rockies SP Jordan Lyles is one of the arms competing for the open rotation spot that's likely to occur with Jhoulys Chacin (shoulder) injured. Lyles tossed three scoreless innings Tuesday, March 11, with four strikeouts. Lyles holds a 1.13 spring ERA and has made some adjustments with pitching coach Jim Wright. The right-hander has improved the angle on his fastball that may force more ground balls from opponents.
Fantasy Tip: If you have to dive into this SP pool, hold your nose. The competition also involves Franklin Morales and Christian Friedrich. Lyles once had a mildly intriguing pedigree but is in a tough situation to succeed, even with his grounder background. Tread carefully, NL-only poachers.

Colorado Rockies SP Jhoulys Chacin (shoulder) will be out at least another week with a sore right shoulder. His MRI exam showed only inflammation and no structural damage. Chacin said he was feeling better Tuesday, Feb. 25, but he may not be ready for opening day.
Fantasy Tip: There is a good chance that Chacin isn't ready when the regular season starts now. However, he may only need to miss one or two starts, and the Rockies could skip his turn in the rotation and get away with it. If a rotation spot is needed, they could turn to Franklin Morales or Jordan Lyles temporarily.

Colorado Rockies SP Juan Nicasio has gained his top-end velocity in the offseason while pitching in the Dominican Republic and due to the fact that he wasn't stuck rehabbing all winter. "I have power," Nicasio said. "I hit 98, 97 (mph). The lowest it was last year was 88 or 89, I think. You're going to see." However, SPs Franklin Morales, Jordan Lyles and Christian Friedrich are all fighting this spring to take away Nicasio's rotation spot.
Nicasio developed the reflex of pulling back his head at the end of his delivery ever since he was struck by a line drive that fractured his skull in August of 2011, and it led to a lack of finish to his fastball and robbed him of downward movement on his offspeed offerings. He also dealt with a knee injury for much of last season.

Colorado Rockies SP Jordan Lyles is already drawing trade interest after the team dealt for him Tuesday, Dec. 3. For now, the Rockies plan on keeping him.

The Houston Astros acquired OF Dexter Fowler and a player to be named from the Colorado Rockies Tuesday, Dec. 3, in exchange for SP Jordan Lyles and OF Brandon Barnes.
Fantasy Tip: Fowler's value doesn't change all that much with the move to Houston, where he'll start in center field. Lyles and Barnes are merely NL-only fodder. Lyles has room to grow, but Coors Field will negate any upside he has left. Barnes is more of a fourth outfield type that might struggle to find consistent playing time, like he did in Houston.

The Houston Astros have two off days within four days, which allowed manager Bo Porter to juggle his starting rotation. SP Bud Norris will work Friday, June 28, followed by SP Jordan Lyles Saturday, June 29, and SP Lucas Harrell Sunday, June 30.

Houston Astros SP Jordan Lyles allowed two runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings, struck out five and walked one to improve to 3-1 on Sunday, June 2. The Astros edged the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 5-4. Lyles, who was promoted from Triple-A on May 2, has a 1.90 ERA over his last four starts after giving up eight runs through four innings in a 12-7 loss against Texas.

Houston Astros manager Bo Porter announced Tuesday, May 14, that SP Jordan Lyles will slide up a day to pitch Friday, May 17, against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Porter wants to break up his left-handed starters, and the scheduled off day Thursday, May 16, allows him to do that.
