Cubs | Mike Olt working on approach at the plate

Thu, 03 Jul 2014 17:44:01 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Mike Olt has been working with hitting coach Bill Mueller to simplify his approach at the plate and to improve his confidence.

Fantasy Tip: Olt leads all National League rookies with 11 homers this year, but he is hitting just .150. His power potential is intriguing, but he will have to improve his batting average significantly before he warrants consideration in standard fantasy leagues.

Cubs | Mike Olt not worried about slump

Mon, 09 Jun 2014 15:56:18 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Mike Olt said he's not worried about his 0-for-16 slump at the plate. He's hitting only .153 on the year but has nine home runs. 3B Luis Valbuena is starting at third base Monday, June 9. "Things are starting to come around," Olt said. "All it takes is one thing to click, and next thing you know, you're 30 for the next 60. I feel good."

Cubs | Platoon situation at 3B continues

Tue, 13 May 2014 16:14:56 -0700

Chicago Cubs manager Rick Renteria said he will continue to mix and match 3Bs Luis Valbuena and Mike Olt at third base, with Olt facing more left-handers. Olt leads all National League rookies with eight home runs, but he's hitting only .187 and has 32 strikeouts in 91 at-bats. Renteria said there will be a day when Olt receives more regular playing time, though.

Fantasy Tip: Olt is a nice source of power, but his inconsistent playing time and low batting average hurts too much in mixed leagues. For now, consider Olt a nice power product in NL-only leagues.

Cubs | Mike Olt, Junior Lake starting

Thu, 10 Apr 2014 10:20:34 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Mike Olt and OF Junior Lake are receiving starts against a right-handed pitcher Thursday, April 10. Manager Rick Renteria explained the move because of the fact that Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole has similar splits against righties and lefties. "These are two young players who we're going to try to get them as much playing time as we can," Renteria said of Olt and Lake. "We're trying to find spots that can give them an opportunity to gain some confidence." OFs Ryan Sweeney and Nate Schierholtz are batting .174 and .118 respectively against righties this year.

Cubs | Junior Lake, Mike Olt haven't faced a RH SP

Wed, 09 Apr 2014 11:19:31 -0700

Chicago Cubs OF Junior Lake and 3B Mike Olt haven't started against a right-handed pitcher through seven games this year. Lake is frustrated by his lack of playing time and feels that he's pressing because he's only facing lefty hurlers. General manager Jed Hoyer said the matchups that two of the right-handed pitchers they've faced are power-sinker types that did better against righty bats than lefties.

Fantasy Tip: It may require patience, but now is probably a good time to stash Lake if he has been dropped. He was hitting above his head last year, but part of it was justified because he made so much hard contact. He's a burgeoning source of power and speed that could make a bigger dent for fantasy lineups as the summer.

Cubs | Mike Olt, Ryan Kalish make roster

Thu, 27 Mar 2014 11:23:57 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Mike Olt has made the team's opening day roster, as has OF Ryan Kalish. "Making sure he can play third base, that was really the key once it was clear his bat was ready," general manager Jed Hoyer said. "Over the past two weeks it was pretty clear if he was able to play third base we wanted the bat at Wrigley Field." Heading into the game Thursday, March 27, Olt was hitting .275 with five home runs and 12 RBIs this spring. Manager Rick Renteria isn't committing to Olt playing every day at the hot corner, though, with 3B Luis Valbuena still in the picture.

Fantasy Tip: Olt has impressive power, but his prospect allure wore off last season with Texas when he developed serious vision problems that affected his statistics. He's flying under the radar now, and even though he may split time with Valbuena, he could become valuable in mixed leagues.

Cubs | Mike Olt returning to 3B

Wed, 19 Mar 2014 15:20:07 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Mike Olt (shoulder) will start at third base for the first time this spring Thursday, March 20, after being resigned to designated hitter and first base duties before due to a shoulder injury.

Fantasy Tip: Olt probably won't have enough time at third to prove he should be the starter at the hot corner to open the season. That'll likely fall to a platoon between Luis Valbuena and Donnie Murphy. However, keep Olt on your radar, especially in NL-only leagues, if he gets off to a hot start down on the farm.
