Tigers | Adjustments helping Nick Castellanos

Tue, 17 Jun 2014 19:37:12 -0700

Detroit Tigers 3B Nick Castellanos has been making adjustments at the plate, and they have been paying dividends lately. At the end of May, he worked with hitting coach Wally Joyner to come up with some solutions to pitches that had been giving Castellanos the most trouble. For the most part, the pitches were breaking balls low in the zone that Castellanos simply lacked the plate discipline to avoid. "It's difficult to hit well when you're swinging at bad pitches," Castellanos said.

Fantasy Tip: Castellanos also worked with Joyner on the placement of his hands and feet. Since making the adjustments, Castellanos has seen his batting average rise from .229 to .274.

Tigers | Nick Castellanos still adjusting to third base

Mon, 03 Mar 2014 18:18:31 -0800

Detroit Tigers 3B Nick Castellanos hit his first home run of the spring Monday, March 3, in a Grapefruit League game against the St. Louis Cardinals, and he has five hits in 10 at-bats with seven RBI. However, he is still getting used to playing third base again, and manager Brad Ausmus said that was evident Monday. There was one play where Castellanos was unable to come up with a backhanded grab, and Ausmus said "a good third baseman probably makes that play."

Fantasy Tip: Ausmus has to be happy with the bat of Castellanos, and the prospect has another month to work on his defense and get more comfortable, something Ausmus admitted could potentially happen. Fantasy owners will be very pleased if the offense keeps up. He is a great long-term keeper prospect, a must-have in AL-only leagues and he has value in deeper mixed formats, too. If your fantasy provider allows him to be used at both his old position of outfield, as well as third base, his natural position, he will be a very useful guy due to his versatility.

Rangers | Agreed to deal for Prince Fielder

Wed, 20 Nov 2013 17:50:30 -0800

The Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers have agreed on a trade which sends 1B Prince Fielder to the Rangers for 2B Ian Kinsler, pending a physical, learned Wednesday, Nov. 20. There might be another player involved in the deal, but that has not been confirmed. Fielder has a $214 million contract, and it is uncertain if any cash will be changing hands to help the Rangers pay that contract. Fielder has a limited no-trade clause that includes the Rangers, but it is believed he is willing to accept the deal.

Fantasy Tip: Fielder and Kinsler remain must-start fantasy options, but Kinsler might slip ever so slightly moving to a more spacious ballpark for half of his games. Jurickson Profar will be a regular in the lineup in Arlington, and he might even be a little bit overvalued by fantasy owners with a clear path. Still, he is worth a roster spot in most fantasy formats because he is a middle infielder with a ton of upside.

Miguel Cabrera or perhaps even Victor Martinez presumably will take over at first base, although it is possible the Tigers could still make additional moves to shore up the position. Nick Castellanos could also find a more regular role now, either at third base or as the designated hitter.

Tigers | Won't rush Nick Castellanos

Thu, 21 Mar 2013 17:15:32 -0700

Detroit Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said the team sent down 3B Nick Castellanos so he could work on his outfield defense. The team also will be careful not to rush him back to the majors despite his abilities with the bat.

Fantasy Tip: Castellanos should be one of the first to be recalled if the Tigers suffer an injury or aren't happy with the production of their left field situation. He'll likely be a factor in deep AL leagues this year.

Tigers | Nick Castellanos likely headed for minors

Thu, 28 Feb 2013 23:58:51 -0800

Detroit Tigers 3B Nick Castellanos will likely go to Double-A later in spring camp as the team makes its minor-league assignments. The team believes Castellanos needs dedicated work in the outfield, which is where he was forced to move last year when 3B Miguel Cabrera dropped anchor at Castellanos' natural position, third base.
