The Seattle Mariners are not ready to trade SP Taijuan Walker. The Tampa Bay Rays are believed to have asked for Walker in a package that would include SP David Price. "We think the guy has the ability to be a front-line starter," Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said. "I expect Taijuan to be with us."

Seattle Mariners manager Eric Wedge said Friday, Sept. 6, that SP Taijuan Walker will make his last start of the season Monday, Sept. 9, and then he will be shut down for the season. SP Brandon Maurer will take Walker's place in the six-man rotation.

The Seattle Mariners called up SP Taijuan Walker from Triple-A Tacoma. He'll start Friday, Aug. 30.
Fantasy Tip: The highly rated prospect will be a hot commodity in mixed leagues. He faces the Houston Astros in his debut, so that's a good spot to roll with him. In shallower formats, it's best to use him carefully; deeper players should be more inclined to try him out in every start he makes because of his upside. For more, click here.

Seattle Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik left open the possibility that SP Taijuan Walker might still be recalled from the minors once rosters expand in September. Zduriencik said the team is in the midst of discussing names for September call-ups.
Fantasy Tip: AL-only owners desperate for pitching might want to stash Walker away just in case, but really he only has value in long-term keeper formats right now. Walker has the potential to be a fantasy stud in 2014 and beyond.

Seattle Mariners SP Joe Saunders is a good possibility to be traded by the non-waiver trade deadline because the club may want to use the final two-plus months of the season to audition SPs Taijuan Walker and James Paxton, according to The Seattle Times' Geoff Baker.
Fantasy Tip: The M's may not be willing to go one of those two right away, but it's a good possibility that one of them, if not both, will debut in the second half. Walker is on the mixed league radar, naturally. Paxton would deserve a look in AL-only leagues, at least.

Seattle Mariners SP Taijuan Walker will have an innings limit this season, according to general manager Jack Zduriencik. The GM declined to give a specific number, however.
Fantasy Tip: Zduriencik seemed to imply that how Walker progresses this season will play a part in when they shut him down. Still, it seems likely that the number won't be greater than 170 or 180, given that last season the prized right-hander pitched only 126 2/3 frames, exactly 30 more than in 2011. Fantasy owners hoping to get something from Walker this season should probably reduce their expectations substantially, but 2014 is looking promising.

The Seattle Mariners are dealing with an open spot in their starting rotation, one that is likely to be filled by SP Erasmo Ramirez. However, SP Blake Beavan has been solid in a long-relief role out of the bullpen lately and has starting experience. Ramirez is sporting a 5.06 ERA at Triple-A Tacoma after allowing three runs and seven hits while walking six in 5 1/3 innings in his last outing. A remote possibility would be SP Taijuan Walker, who is 2-0 with a 0.56 ERA with 16 strikeouts and five walks at Tacoma. SP Danny Hultzen (shoulder) is nursing an arm injury and hasn't pitched in July, so he's not an option.
Fantasy Tip: Grab Ramirez in all AL-only leagues if he isn't owned already. If he's the one to take the rotation spot, he's worthy of consideration in deep mixed leagues, as well, even if it's a short-term stay in the rotation.

The Seattle Mariners promoted SP Taijuan Walker to Triple-A Tacoma Friday, June 21.
Fantasy Tip: Walker went 4-7 with a 2.46 ERA and 96 strikeouts in 84 innings (14 starts) for Double-A Jackson. The 20-year-old righty is extremely athletic and has three above-average pitches, including an electric fastball. Walker's exceptional K upside should be realized at some point this year in Seattle. He's probably owned in AL leagues, but you should mark his name down in mixed leagues.
