Mets | Noah Syndergaard sent down

Tue, 18 Mar 2014 14:51:26 -0700

New York Mets SP Noah Syndergaard was sent to minor league camp Tuesday, March 18. He'll start at Triple-A Las Vegas for some more seasoning. The team also re-assigned Ps Rafael Montero, Joel Carreno, Ryan Reid, Cory Mazzoni and Miguel Socolovich, 1Bs Brandon Allen and Matt Clark and C Juan Centeno.

Fantasy Tip: As DiComo notes, Syndergaard, the club's top pitching prospect, is expected to follow a similar path to the bigs that Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler had, which would put his arrival in New York around sometime in June. That would keep Syndergaard from achieving Super 2 arbitration status. He should be firmly on the radar of those in NL-only and keeper leagues.

Mets | Noah Syndergaard dominates in debut

Mon, 03 Mar 2014 14:57:46 -0800

New York Mets SP Noah Syndergaard dominated in his spring debut against the Atlanta Braves Monday, March 3. Syndergaard was hitting the high-90s and blew several Braves hitters away with the heater. "Today was a big test," manager Terry Collins said. "You've got the Atlanta Braves. The leadoff hitter is as big as you are. That kind of shows you aren't in Kansas anymore. You're where the big guys play, and he handled it." Syndergaard is expected to start at Class AAA this year.

Fantasy Tip: Syndergaard has plenty to work on and hasn't yet experienced the upper levels of the minors. The Mets have no reason to rush him to the bigs, either. There's still a good chance we see him get his feet wet in New York later this year, but don't expect to get much out of him for fantasy purposes.

Mets | More on Jon Niese

Wed, 26 Feb 2014 12:16:16 -0800

Updating a previous report, New York Mets SP Jon Niese's (shoulder) pain in his left shoulder is in a different part of his shoulder than what he experienced last year when he suffered a partially torn left rotator cuff. He first reported pain early in camp, and the team limited him to long toss. "He just said he's got a little discomfort in there," manager Terry Collins said, "so we're going to have a look."

Fantasy Tip: This can't be good news for Niese, who dealt with shoulder problems last season. Keep an eye on this one. If Niese won't be ready for opening day, John Lannan, Noah Syndergaard or Rafael Montero could sneak into the rotation. Syndergaard has the most upside of the bunch, with Montero not far behind.

Mets | Wilmer Flores to get look at SS?

Wed, 26 Feb 2014 12:07:46 -0800

A New York Mets team official said 2B Wilmer Flores will see a legitimate look at shortstop in spring training as a competitor to SS Ruben Tejada. Some in the industry don't think Flores has the first-step quickness to succeed at short, but the Mets will give him a chance to show what he's got in spring games. New York also continues to consider trading for Seattle Mariners SS Nick Franklin, but they won't give up elite pitching prospects such as SPs Noah Syndergaard or Rafael Montero.

"At this moment Ruben Tejada is the shortstop here," manager Terry Collins said. "We've got to be patient with him. Certainly we're going to get him a number of at-bats this spring. He's been told that. And we'll see how he plays. We don't have a lot of options. He's our main guy right now." Collins wants to see more line drives from Tejada and wants to see some range at shortstop.

Fantasy Tip: The fact that New York is considering Flores at the 6 shows their lack in faith offensively in Tejada. They may prefer a below-average defender in favor of some offense.

Mets | More on Noah Syndergaard's innings limit

Wed, 19 Feb 2014 12:51:05 -0800

New York Mets vice president Paul DePodesta said SP Noah Syndergaard should be allowed around a 30-inning increase from the previous season when he threw 124 2/3 innings in the minors. "I would say as a rough estimate, that's fine," DePodesta said. "A lot of it's going to be on how he actually racks up those innings -- how efficient he is in the pitch counts, how much rest he's getting between starts, how much side work we do with him." The Mets may shave some innings from his early minor league starts this year in order to conserve him for the second half if he's called up.

Mets | Manager praises Noah Syndergaard

Mon, 17 Feb 2014 12:32:47 -0800

New York Mets manager Terry Collins has been praising top pitching prospect SP Noah Syndergaard. "Let's face it -- great stuff," Collins said after Syndergaard tossed a bullpen session on the first day of official pitchers and catchers workouts. "… This kid is throwing 97 mph today with a hook from hell. Really impressive." Syndergaard said he spent the offseason working on his changeup. He's expected to open the season at Triple-A Las Vegas.

Mets | Noah Syndergaard likely to have innings cap

Mon, 17 Feb 2014 12:15:45 -0800

New York Mets SP Noah Syndergaard is likely to have an innings cap of 145 innings this year, meaning he could have plenty of short starts at Triple-A Las Vegas.

Mets | Noah Syndergaard might follow timeline of others

Tue, 14 Jan 2014 20:29:30 -0800

New York Mets P Noah Syndergaard is the team's top prospect and a non-roster invitee for spring training. He is not expected to start the season with the big club, but he should follow the timeline of SPs Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler, arriving to make his debut by July, according to beat writer Jorge Castillo.

Mets | Fifth starter could come via minor league deal

Wed, 18 Dec 2013 01:01:12 -0800

The New York Mets hinted a fifth starter could be signed by way of a minor league contract, which would allow P Jenrry Mejia, P Jacob deGrom, and P Rafael Montero to compete for a spot out of spring training and help ensure that top P prospect Noah Syndergaard would not be blocked from a summer promotion.

Mets | Jenrry Mejia has bone spurs

Mon, 19 Aug 2013 12:55:31 -0700

New York Mets SP Jenrry Mejia (elbow) is dealing with bone spurs in his right elbow and might need surgery after the season. Manager Terry Collins thinks Mejia will soon have surgery, ending his season. "I can't say I know for sure, but it certainly doesn't look very good," Collins said about Mejia pitching again this season. Mejia wasn't at any harm by pitching through the pain in his elbow.

SP Carlos Torres could be asked to start against the Detroit Tigers Friday, Aug. 23, in Mejia's spot. Another option would be for Mejia's turn to be skipped and SP Matt Harvey to go on Friday. The team prefers to give SP Zack Wheeler an extra day of rest to preserve his innings, though. Collins said that September call-ups would likely be plugged into the rotation instead of Torres. SPs Rafael Montero, Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom are unlikely to be among that group, however, because they are facing innings limits.

Fantasy Tip: Torres may be a short-term NL-only option but nothing else. Any minor league pitcher that is tasked to fill out the rotation in the season's final month likely won't be fantasy-relevant, either.
