Marlins | Christian Yelich returns vs. Mets

Thu, 16 Apr 2015 13:03:44 -0700

Miami Marlins OF Christian Yelich (back) is batting second and playing left field against the New York Mets Thursday, April 16. Yelich has missed the past two games due to back tightness.

Fantasy Tip: Yelich ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) is always in play for FantasyScore contests, as he carries a modest cap hit and hits in front of slugger Giancarlo Stanton. Thursday might not be the ideal time to utilize Yelich in daily contests, though, with this being his first game in a few days. Seasonal owners can safely return him to their lineups, however.

Suzuki ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) had a hit in four at-bats last night and is hitting .250 on the season. He's a weaker outfield option at FantasyScore today, even though he managed to hit .333 with one homer against lefties in 2014.

Marlins | Christian Yelich unlikely to play Wednesday

Tue, 14 Apr 2015 15:46:06 -0700

Miami Marlins OF Christian Yelich (back) is unlikely to play until Thursday, April 16, at the earliest while dealing with tightness in his back. The Marlins don't have a timetable for his return, but they just want to be cautious with him to avoid having to put him on the disabled list. Manager Mike Redmond is calling Yelich day-to-day for now.

Fantasy Tip: Keep a close eye on Yelich's progress over the next day or two. Ichiro Suzuki ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) is starting in Yelich's place Tuesday, and he'd see his fantasy value increase if Yelich misses extended time. Suzuki, 41, is really only worth owning in NL-only leagues if he falls into an extended starting job.

Suzuki ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) has really declined in recent seasons, and he hit just .274 with no home runs against right-handers in 2014.

Marlins | Christian Yelich deal finalized

Sun, 22 Mar 2015 12:08:34 -0700

Updating a previous report, Miami Marlins OF Christian Yelich's seven-year, $49.57 million contract extension has been made official. He will earn $570,000 in 2015, $1 million in 2016, $3.5 million in 2017, $7 million in 2018, $9.75 million in 2019, $12.5 million in 2020 and $14 million in 2021. A club option worth $15 million exists for the 2022 season, with a $1.25 million buyout.

Fantasy Tip: The 23-year-old Yelich is probably more valuable in dynasty leagues than redraft leagues at this point because he is still several years away from reaching his prime. That being said, he will probably be selected in the early middle rounds of universal drafts this season due to his ability to contribute in all offensive categories.

Marlins | Christian Yelich financials

Wed, 18 Mar 2015 16:15:58 -0700

Updating a previous report, Miami Marlins OF Christian Yelich's contract extension will be a seven-year, $49.5 million deal, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: The hyped 23-year-old is a budding star, but be careful not to invest too heavily in 2015. He is still likely at least a year or two away from his peak, especially in the power department. Regardless, Yelich warrants attention in the early middle rounds with batting average and runs likely rewarding plus-returns, and he is a rare helper across all categories.

Marlins | Christian Yelich nearing extension

Wed, 18 Mar 2015 14:25:48 -0700

Miami Marlins OF Christian Yelich is on the verge of being signed to a seven-year contract extension that would pay him more than $40 million, according to a source. Yelich won the National League Gold Glove award as a left fielder in 2014. Everything in the deal should be finalized as soon as this weekend. Yelich hit .284 with a .362 on-base percentage in his first full season.

Fantasy Tip: Yelich, just 23, is a rising star prospect who hasn't hit worse than .284 in his first two MLB seasons. His good contact rate and line drive swing should keep his batting average high, and he can also run a little bit (21 stolen bases in 2014). The power has time to develop, as well. He's an early-rounds pick with upside for plenty more.

Marlins | Christian Yelich tabbed for two hole

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 15:58:28 -0800

Miami Marlins OF Christian Yelich will bat second between SS Dee Gordon and OF Giancarlo Stanton, according to manager Mike Redmond. Redmond noted he will try a few lineups in spring training, though, and he wants to see Yelich batting third and Stanton fourth.

Fantasy Tip: Expect Yelich to come off the board in the early-middle rounds on draft day, as he is capable of contributing across all five categories. However, his true value lies in his speed and likely high run total with the power and run production more of a bonus. Entering his second full season, look for Yelich's production trajectory to continue heading straight up.
