Wed, 22 May 2013 16:25:35 -0700 The Miami Marlins aren't considering promoting OF Jake Marisnick. Fantasy Tip: Marisnick is off to a rather slow start at Double-A Jacksonville, and with Christian Yelich heating up, it seems as though Yelich is much closer to a call-up to Miami. Temper your expectations in keeper leagues.
Wed, 08 May 2013 13:24:05 -0700 Miami Marlins OF Christian Yelich went 5-for-6 with two triples and a home run with Double-A Jacksonville Tuesday, May 7. "Yelly, he's turning it up, he definitely is," said INF Derek Dietrich, who watched Yelich through Tuesday go 13 for his last 26 (.500) with two doubles, four triples and two homers. "He's a great hitter, one of the purest hitters I've ever seen and I'm sure it won't be long before we're seeing him in this uniform, too." Fantasy Tip: Yelich is perhaps the team's most exciting and top-rated position player prospect in their minor league system next to Jake Marisnick. Marisnick might be closer to a call-up, though, even though both are playing at Class AA. Miami is clearly in a rebuilding process and can afford to give Yelich some major league experience later this year if he continues to impress in the minors. Keeper leaguers need to be aware of this kid.
Tue, 16 Apr 2013 14:42:11 -0700 Miami Marlins OF Christian Yelich (heel) was used as the designated hitter in extended spring training Tuesday, April 16, and he went hitless in four at-bats. He's been dealing with a left heel bruise. OFs Jake Marisnick (hand) and Marcell Ozuna (wrist) have also been playing in extended spring training but are now expected to join Single-A Jupiter. Both are expected to move to Double-A Jacksonville in a few days.
Wed, 03 Apr 2013 10:45:32 -0700 Miami Marlins OFs Christian Yelich (heel), Jake Marisnick (hand) and Marcell Ozuna (wrist) will begin the season on the disabled list in the minors. Yelich has a "stone bruise" on his left heel, Marisnick has a broken left hand and Ozuna is dealing with a fractured left wrist. All three were expected to be the starting outfield for Double-A Jacksonville this year. Yelich isn't expected to miss much time, however. He's hoping to play in games this weekend. Marisnick could be back in roughly two weeks. Ozuna might be out for three more weeks. Fantasy Tip: Yelich had an outstanding spring and was receiving consideration to make the big league roster, but the Marlins prefer to take their time with him. Marisnick is in a similar boat, although he has a bit more experience and might be closer to major-league ready. Both outfielders could see late-season call-ups, though, so be ready in NL-only and keeper leagues.
Fri, 22 Mar 2013 13:12:06 -0700 The Miami Marlins sent OF Christian Yelich to the minors Friday, March 22, after he hit .364 with five home runs and 14 RBIs this spring. He will start the year at Double-A Jacksonville. P Jonathan Albaladejo and C Jake Jefferies were reassigned to minor league camp and P Tom Koehler was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans. Fantasy Tip: Yelich must prove himself in the minors, but he has a decent shot to make his major league debut. Jake Marisnick, the Marlins' other prized outfield prospect, is older and more advanced, though, so he may see a call-up before Yelich.
Tue, 19 Mar 2013 15:10:37 -0700 Miami Marlins manager Mike Redmond said he may choose to go with a platoon in center field to start the year. OF Christian Yelich may be Redmond's top choice, but he's expected to start the season at Double-A Jacksonville. Yelich is hitting .381 this spring and leads the team with five home runs and 13 RBIs. "I play him all the time. I love him. Like I said, he's had a great spring. He's done everything we've asked of him. But at the end of the day, he's never had an at-bat above A ball, and we have to make sure we're doing the right thing for him and the organization," Redmond said. OFs Chris Coghlan, Gorkys Hernandez and Justin Ruggiano (back) are the realistic candidates. Ruggiano is 1-for-11 after returning from a back injury and doesn't look 100 percent healthy. Coghlan has a minor league option left, but he appears to deserve a spot the most. The team will not move OF Juan Pierre from left field to center. Fantasy Tip: Ruggiano is in line for regression after a very fortunate hit rate last season as he emerged out of nowhere. He's somewhat intriguing, but mainly only for his power. Coghlan and Hernandez only stand out in NL-only leagues, and their luster is lessened with platoon possibilities. Yelich will probably see major league at-bats later in the season.
Mon, 18 Mar 2013 11:45:53 -0700 Miami Marlins OF Christian Yelich has a team-leading four home runs and 12 RBIs while hitting .359 with a 1.251 OPS this spring. He will start the year at Double-A Jacksonville, but he's tempting the organization with his talent. "He's just a natural-born hitter," hitting coach Tino Martinez said. "It doesn't matter if he's facing rookies or guys who've played six or eight years. He knows what he's doing and has a great game plan up there. There's nothing fancy about him. He just hits." He needs to clean up his throwing motion, as he tends to throw across his body frequently. Fantasy Tip: Yelich is behind Jose Fernandez as the team's No. 2 minor league prospects. Yelich could be a September call-up this season, meaning he probably won't have any worth outside of NL-only leagues in 2013.
Thu, 07 Mar 2013 15:39:43 -0800 The Miami Marlins' center field job is wide open, with OFs Justin Ruggiano (back) and Chris Coghlan competing for the spot. Ruggiano is hoping to make his spring debut Saturday, March 9, after being bothered by a tight lower back. Coghlan is 6-for-20 (.300) with a double and two RBIs in his seven spring games. "We're going to run him out in center. We haven't had anybody stand out yet, so there's still an opportunity for somebody to take that job. Right now, he's swinging the bat and doing everything he can possibly do," manager Mike Redmond said of Coghlan. OFs Gorkys Hernandez, Bryan Petersen and Kevin Mattison are secondary options. Hernandez is out of minor league options, however, and Coghlan has one option left. OFs Jake Marisnick and Christian Yelich will open with Double-A Jacksonville.
Wed, 27 Feb 2013 13:11:15 -0800 Miami Marlins OFs Christian Yelich and Jake Marisnick are both likely to start the year at Double-A Jacksonville. "I would say they'll probably switch off between left and center," president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest said, earlier this month. "It won't hurt either one of them. My guess is eventually here someday one will be in left and one will be in center anyway."
Sat, 23 Feb 2013 23:32:11 -0800 Miami Marlins OF Gorkys Hernandez started in the outfield Saturday, Feb. 23, in place of OF Justin Ruggiano (back). Marlins manager Mike Redmond said there are other options in case Ruggiano is out for a while. "Bryan Petersen, Chris Coghlan, those guys can also go in there," Redmond said. "We'll mix guys in, Christian Yelich and Jake Marisnick. I'm going to get them in some games, too. I'd like to see them play. We got some other guys: Kevin Mattison. We'll try to mix guys in and out as much as we possibly can and see how it all shakes out."
