Rockies | Carlos Gonzalez out Tuesday

Tue, 25 Aug 2015 13:46:11 -0700

Colorado Rockies OF Carlos Gonzalez (knee) is out of the game Tuesday, Aug. 25, due to a sore right knee. OF Matt McBride is batting seventh against Atlanta Braves SP Mike Foltynewicz.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) just hurt the knee the day before, so the Rockies aren't taking any chances and are keeping him out. He should be stashed away on your bench in regular leagues as well. McBride ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is worth a low-cost flier. He has a .208 mark in August but his bat has warmed up in the past week (.357).

Braves | Mike Foltynewicz looks for rebound

Mon, 24 Aug 2015 22:49:24 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Foltynewicz is scheduled to start the Colorado Rockies Tuesday, Aug. 25. He has allowed 21 runs in 21 innings in four starts in the month of August, allowing at least six runs in three of his past four outings.

Fantasy Tip: Foltynewicz ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) is attractive for FantasyScore players due to his low salary, but he has been terrible lately. Avoid him until he can get untracked, especially on nights like Tuesday where there are a full slate of games.

Braves | Mike Foltynewicz likely to enter rotation

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 11:39:01 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Foltynewicz is likely to start in the place of SP Manny Banuelos (elbow) Wednesday, July 29.

Fantasy Tip: Folty has a 5.27 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 52 strikeouts in 54 2/3 innings over nine starts for the Braves this season. His stay in the Atlanta rotation could be short, depending on how Banuelos heals. Folty has plenty of strikeout upside, but a matchup against the Baltimore Orioles tomorrow is very risky for FantasyScore users.

Braves | Mike Minor will undergo surgery

Tue, 12 May 2015 16:40:58 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Minor (shoulder) will undergo surgery this week, according to Bill Shanks of FOX Sports. SP Mike Foltynewicz should remain in the starting rotation for the time being.

Fantasy Tip: Foltynewicz ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) picked up the win in each of his first two major league starts, but did so with an ERA of 5.23. Foltynewicz does have nine strikeouts through 10 and one-third innings pitched, showing his upside. Foltynewicz is an option in NL-only leagues, and he should be owned in dynasty leagues.

Braves | Mike Foltynewicz tries for another win

Mon, 11 May 2015 22:04:14 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Foltynewicz looks for his second straight win over the Cincinnati Reds Tuesday, May 12. He allowed two earned runs over five innings in a win May 1.

Fantasy Tip: Foltynewicz ($3,700; or 7.4% of cap) is a decent mid-level FantasyScore play if you want to save money to spread across your hitter spots.

Braves | Mike Foltynewicz starting Friday

Thu, 30 Apr 2015 13:33:48 -0700

Updating a previous report, Atlanta Braves SP Mike Foltynewicz will be announced as the starting pitcher against the Cincinnati Reds Friday, May 1, after the game Thursday, April 30.

Fantasy Tip: Over 21 2/3 innings with Triple-A Gwinnett this season, Foltynewicz has a 2.08 ERA, a 1.25 WHIP and a 12.5 K/9. The 23-year-old right-hander should be viewed as a high-risk, high-reward start in all fantasy formats Friday. A speculative add in NL-only leagues isn't out of the question, though, especially with the potential Foltynewicz pitches well and sticks in the rotation.

Braves | Mike Foltynewicz in hunt for job

Fri, 20 Mar 2015 20:54:20 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Foltynewicz is one of three pitchers fighting for the final spot in the team's rotation.

Fantasy Tip: Foltynewicz is battling Eric Stults and Cody Martin for the final starting job. He worked in relief, posting a 5.30 ERA in 16 appearances with the Houston Astros in 2014. He'll only have fantasy appeal if he wins a rotation job.

Braves | Mike Minor to see specialist

Thu, 05 Mar 2015 11:06:10 -0800

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Minor (shoulder) will be shut down indefinitely and will visit with a specialist in the next few days, according president of baseball operations John Hart. The team is taking a proactive approach, and they're hoping it's not a season-ending injury. Hart also said Minor might have another MRI exam on his shoulder. SPs Eric Stults, Wandy Rodriguez, Mike Foltynewicz and Manny Banuelos are competing for the fifth rotation spot, but if Minor isn't ready to start the season, the Braves could go with two of those pitchers in the rotation.

Fantasy Tip: The Braves are definitely hoping this injury is minor. But after Minor's frustrating 2014 season in which he dealt with plenty of shoulder woes, this can't be a good sign early in spring. Minor was considered a sleeper candidate before this news after being just a year removed from a 13-9 season in which he posted an ERA of 3.21 and a K/9 of 8.0 in 32 starts. Minor might still be worth a late-round stab in mixed leagues, but definitely keep an eye on the results of his shoulder tests.

Braves | Wandy Rodriguez impressing

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 14:35:15 -0800

Atlanta Braves SP Wandy Rodriguez has impressed so far in his spring workouts, and he is a leading candidate for the No. 5 starting rotation spot. Rodriguez is competing with SPs Eric Stults, Mike Foltynewicz and Manny Banuelos for the spot. The Braves could consider putting Foltynewicz or Banuelos in the bullpen if they don't win the job. Rodriguez has made only 18 starts the last two years due to injuries, and he was 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA in six starts with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2014. Manager Fredi Gonzalez said Rodriguez is healthy and throwing the ball with little effort.

Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez would only be an option as a late-round pick in deep mixed leagues if he wins that final rotation spot. There's a lot of spring competition left, so we likely won't know for a while. Stay tuned.
