Royals | Whit Merrifield takes a seat

Sat, 23 Jul 2016 14:44:23 -0700

Kansas City Royals 2B Whit Merrifield is out of the lineup Saturday, July 23, with 2B Christian Colon hitting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Colon is hitting .253 with nine RBI on the season, and he's not much of an option against Cole Hamels.

Royals | Whit Merrifield sitting vs. Cleveland

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 08:26:30 -0700

Kansas City Royals 2B/OF Whit Merrifield is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, July 20. 2B Christian Colon is starting at the keystone and batting ninth against Cleveland Indians SP Carlos Carrasco Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Merrifield is having a nice run with Kansas City and owns a respectable .276 batting average with 30 runs through 49 games. He's skidding in July (.174/.240/.261 slash line), though, so he's losing his luster in deep mixed leagues and should be left to AL-only formats at this point. Against Carrasco, view Colon as a desperation fantasy option in all formats Wednesday.

Royals | Alcides Escobar leading off

Sat, 16 Jul 2016 14:39:14 -0700

Kansas City Royals SS Alcides Escobar is leading off Saturday, July 16, with 2B Whit Merrifield out. 2B Christian Colon is hitting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Escobar is hitting just .250 with 17 RBI and 10 steals in 260 at-bats from the leadoff spot. He has a good matchup against Mike Pelfrey, though, and he's worth a spot at the right price. Colon is hitting just .253 this year and isn't worth consideration.

Royals | Alex Gordon, Jarrod Dyson resting

Sat, 09 Jul 2016 10:26:45 -0700

Kansas City Royals OFs Alex Gordon and Jarrod Dyson are not in the starting lineup against Seattle Mariners SP Wade Miley Saturday, July 9. 2B/OF Whit Merrifield will bat leadoff and start in left field, INF Christian Colon will play second base and bat second, OF Paulo Orlando will bat sixth and play center field and OF Brett Eibner will hit seventh and start in right field.

Fantasy Tip: The Royals are only using one left-handed batter (1B Eric Hosmer) Saturday versus the southpaw Miley, which explains the absences of Gordon and Dyson from the lineup. Colon and Eibner should only be viewed as desperation sources of salary cap relief in daily fantasy games.

Royals | Whit Merrifield, Paulo Orlando sitting

Tue, 05 Jul 2016 13:34:49 -0700

Kansas City Royals 2B Whit Merrifield and OF Paulo Orlando are not in the starting lineup Tuesday, July 5. 2B Christian Colon is starting at the keystone and hitting second, while OF Brett Eibner is in right field and batting seventh against Toronto Blue Jays SP R.A. Dickey.

Fantasy Tip: The matchup isn't a bad one, but both Colon and Eibner are low on the totem pole of deep sleeper considerations in daily formats. Colon is hitting .284 in limited at-bats but has yet to hit a homer in three seasons. Eibner has a home run and seven RBI in 40 at-bats.

Royals | Cheslor Cuthbert sitting vs. Cards

Thu, 30 Jun 2016 13:34:29 -0700

Kansas City Royals 3B Cheslor Cuthbert is not in the starting lineup Thursday, June 30. 2B Christian Colon is starting at third base and batting sixth against St. Louis Cardinals SP Mike Leake Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: Cuthbert has provided a solid return in deep mixed and AL-only leagues with 19 runs, seven home runs, 20 RBI and a .271/.307/.429 slash line over 45 games. However, he's still not even a middle-tier option in those deep formats. Colon is a depth piece in cavernous mixed and AL-only setups, and he is a potential flier in daily contests Thursday.

Royals | No Whit Merrifield vs. Cards

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 13:42:36 -0700

Kansas City Royals 2B/OF Whit Merrifield is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, June 29. 2B Christian Colon is starting at second base and batting seventh against St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Merrifield has settled into the leadoff spot of late, and he has 22 runs through 35 games with a solid .307/.329/.427 slash line. View the rookie as a viable starting option at the keystone or in the outfield in deep mixed leagues. Colon is a viable low-priced flier in daily contests because of his respectable career .354 on-base percentage, but there is limited upside given his .359 career slugging percentage.

Royals | Night off vs. Cards for Alex Gordon

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 13:39:52 -0700

Kansas City Royals OF Alex Gordon is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, June 28. 2B Christian Colon draws into the lineup at second base and is batting eighth against St. Louis Cardinals SP Michael Wacha Tuesday.

Fantasy Tip: Gordon played the past three games and is freshly back from a lengthy injury absence due to a fracture in his right wrist. Be patient with him as he shakes off the rust and expect a few nights off along the way. Colon is nothing more than a desperation option in seasonal formats, but he is a potential low-priced flier in daily contests.

Royals | KC not interested in Jose Reyes

Thu, 16 Jun 2016 17:36:53 -0700

Updating a previous report, the Kansas City Royals do not appear to be interested in acquiring Colorado Rockies SS Jose Reyes to play second base. The Royals plan to continue using the tandem of INFs Whit Merrifield and Christian Colon at the keystone position.

Fantasy Tip: Entering play Thursday, Merrifield was batting .330 with two home runs and eight RBI through 100 at-bats, while Colon was batting .288 with three RBI in 59 at-bats. Both players are productive sources of cap relief in DFS, with Merrifield being the better fantasy option for AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues because he is expected to see most of the playing time at second. Reyes should be stashed in all formats because he has the potential to make an immediate impact wherever he lands.

Royals | Three KC regulars taking a seat

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 15:02:08 -0700

Kansas City Royals OF Jarrod Dyson and Paulo Orlando and 1B Kendrys Morales are not in the starting lineup Wednesday, June 15. OF Whit Merrifield is in left field and hitting leadoff, OF Reymond Fuentes is starting in right field and batting seventh and C Drew Butera is doing the catching and hitting ninth with C Salvador Perez serving as the designated hitter. Also, 2B Christian Colon is starting at the keystone and is hitting eighth against Cleveland Indians SP Corey Kluber.

Fantasy Tip: Merrifield has become a start in KC in short order with a .326 average (31-for-95), and he's homered in back-to-back games for his first two big league long balls. While he's hot, continue using him as a value pick in DFS. He's also worth adding for depth in deep mixed and AL-only leagues with everyday playing time. Fuentes, Butera and Colon all profile as low-end dart throws as deep sleepers in DFS.
