Padres | Drew Pomeranz fans 10

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 23:40:39 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Drew Pomeranz struck out a career-high 10 batters in his win over the Pittsburgh Pirates Wednesday, April 20. He allowed an unearned run on four hits and three walks in 6 2/3 innings.

Fantasy Tip: He has put together some stout numbers in three starts with a 2.04 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 25 K's in 17 2/3 innings. He should be picked up off waivers.

Padres | Drew Pomeranz overshadowed in loss

Thu, 14 Apr 2016 14:26:13 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Drew Pomeranz allowed three hits and two earned runs on a home run while walking three and striking out eight in six innings in a loss to the Philadelphia Phillies Thursday, April 14.

Fantasy Tip: His only real mistake was the home run allowed to Ryan Howard, but Pomeranz was overshadowed by Vincent Velasquez's shutout performance with 16 strikeouts. Pomeranz had seven K's in his first outing, too, and he should now be firmly on the radar of those in deep mixed formats.

Padres | Drew Pomeranz scheduled for Friday start

Mon, 04 Apr 2016 13:25:46 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Drew Pomeranz is starting against the Colorado Rockies Friday, April 8.

Fantasy Tip: Pomeranz has a 4.60 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP through 49 career starts, which makes him an incredibly risky fantasy option at Coors Field Friday. His RP eligibility has added value in particular formats, but his ownership should still be limited to cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues.

Padres | Drew Pomeranz to start in rotation

Fri, 01 Apr 2016 16:34:29 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Drew Pomeranz will start the season in the starting rotation, according to manager Andy Green.

Fantasy Tip: Pomeranz comes in with injury concerns but has upside after posting a 2.35 ERA with Oakland in 69 innings in 2014. He'll need to improve on his control, but he has strikeout abilities (8.00-plus K/9 last two years) and can benefit from the pitching at Pecto Park. He's worth a late-round flier in deep mixed leagues now that he's won a rotation spot and makes for nice rotation depth in NL-only universes.

Padres | Drew Pomeranz hit hard by Royals

Mon, 28 Mar 2016 14:40:14 -0700

San Diego Padres SP/RP Drew Pomeranz was roughed up Monday, March 28, opposite the Kansas City Royals, as he lasted just three innings and surrendered six runs on five hits, including two home runs. He also walked two and struck out three.

Fantasy Tip: Pomeranz has a path to a rotation spot with Brandon Morrow sidelined, but he's not taking advantage of the opportunity, as he now sports an 8.36 ERA this spring. The 2010 No. 5 overall draft pick has exhibited appealing potential before as a starter, specifically when he was 4-3 with a 2.58 ERA in 10 starts in 2014, working 52 1/3 innings and producing 50 strikeouts in the process. Even if he fails in his quest, Pomeranz would likely land in the bullpen, where he would still have something to offer in leagues that count holds. He's battling for a spot on the back-end of the rotation with Colin Rea and Robbie Erlin.

Padres | Drew Pomeranz remains in the mix

Wed, 23 Mar 2016 23:03:20 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Drew Pomeranz made his first start of the Cactus League spring schedule Wednesday, March 23, against the Chicago White Sox. He posted just one hit over four innings while hitting a batter and striking out four batters.

Fantasy Tip: Pomeranz is in competition for a rotation spot in San Diego. However, even if he wins a job he is only worth a look in deepest NL-only fantasy leagues.

Padres | Drew Pomeranz helps his chances

Wed, 23 Mar 2016 16:31:40 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Drew Pomeranz made his first start this spring against the Chicago White Sox Wednesday, March 23, and he gave up just one hit (a solo home run) over four innings. He also walked one, hit one and struck out four. Manager Andy Green said Pomeranz has a strong case for one of the remaining two rotation spots. Whether Pomeranz earns a spot will likely depend on his development of an additional pitch.

Fantasy Tip: It was just his first start, but this is a good beginning for Pomeranz, who excelled in the Oakland Athletics bullpen in 2015. Control has been his biggest issue in the big leagues, but if he can get that under control and have success with a new pitch, he could surprise in SD's rotation. Draft him as a late-round flier in deep mixed and NL-only leagues if he wins a spot.

Padres | SD's rotation competition

Tue, 22 Mar 2016 11:17:27 -0700

San Diego Padres SPs Colin Rea, Brandon Morrow, Robbie Erlin and Drew Pomeranz are battling for the final two rotation spots behind SPs Tyson Ross, James Shields and Andrew Cashner.

Fantasy Tip: Because of his extensive injury history, Morrow seems the least likely to win a job and the most unattractive to fantasy owners. Pomeranz is transitioning to a starting role and perhaps is the most attractive for a low investment late in deep mixed affairs. Youngsters Rea and Erlin will both be worth a late-round investment if they win jobs, too.

Padres | Drew Pomeranz wants to start

Thu, 03 Mar 2016 15:40:23 -0800

San Diego Padres SP Drew Pomeranz, who struck out two hitters in a scoreless inning in a Cactus League game Thursday, March 3, would like to earn a spot in the starting rotation this year after pitching in relief for the Oakland Athletics last year. The Padres can move him back to the bullpen if he doesn't win a spot this spring.

Fantasy Tip: Pomeranz has shown better as a reliever in his career, but a move to a starting role at Petco Park should get your attention, at least as a late-round flier in cavernous deep mixed leagues.

Padres | SD's rotation competition

Mon, 22 Feb 2016 14:57:39 -0800

San Diego Padres SPs Tyson Ross, James Shields and Andrew Cashner are penciled in the starting rotation. SPs Brandon Maurer, Colin Rea, Robbie Erlin, Carlos Villanueva and Drew Pomeranz will compete for the final two spots this spring. SP Brandon Morrow could also be in the mix.

Fantasy Tip: Maurer probably present the most upside of the group because of his strikeout abilities, but how well will he transition from reliever to starter? Pomeranz also presents some intriguing upside if he wins a job, but he may be better off in relief, as well. Stay tuned for who wins these final jobs. They could both certainly be worth a late-round flier in deep mixed formats.
