According to two sources, New England Patriots SS Patrick Chung (thumb) had surgery on his right thumb this week. He aggravated the injury in Week 2 against the San Diego Chargers. CB Sergio Brown and FS Josh Barrett (thumb) might see more time as a result.

Now that the New England Patriots have released both S Brandon Meriweather and S James Sanders, the team is effectively handing a the reins of the safety position over to S Patrick Chung. It is not clear who will start next to him in the secondary. The team could look to sign free-agent S Darren Sharper (Saints) and there has been talk of moving CBs Antwaun Molden or Ras-I Dowling to safety. Sergio Brown and Josh Barrett are also both in the mix.
