Giants | Victor Cruz could still hold out

Fri, 14 Jun 2013 10:15:22 -0700

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz could still hold out of training camp, according to a source with knowledge of these types of situations, despite the fact that Cruz will sign his one-year tender on Friday, June 14. Cruz will be under contract and thus subject to fines of $30,000 per day if he doesn't show. He could have lost $2.289 million if the Giants had retracted the tender offer on Monday, June 17, and replaced it with an offer of $590,000. At that rate for fines, Cruz could afford 76 days of them before he'd reach the $2.289 million for which he's signing his tender. The source said there were no indications that the team was going to rescind the offer, but Cruz didn't want to take the chance.

Fantasy Tip: The article also cited Mike Wallace's situation last season, when the Pittsburgh Steelers didn't elect to rescind the receiver's high tender with a greatly reduced amount. That suggests Cruz really had little to worry about. Negotiations seem to have been somewhat amicable, and the Giants seem to be happy with him, so a holdout seems unlikely barring a drastic change in the nature of the development of this story.

Giants | Hakeem Nicks', Victor Cruz's absences have effects

Fri, 14 Jun 2013 09:55:31 -0700

New York Giants WRs Hakeem Nicks, who attended the team's minicamp but not OTAs, and Victor Cruz, who didn't, were the subject of inquiry related to how long it will take them to get their timing back because of their offseason absences. Offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride responded, "That is so, not unimportant, but it is just a relatively minor thing," he began. "The thing is they haven't been working. They haven't been listening. They haven't been growing, they haven't been developing. They haven't been receiving the coaching that they need to get better. To be quite frank, they need it. And the absence and not being here has hurt them and because of that, it has hurt us." Gilbride added that the positive is that other receivers have received those reps and opportunities to become integral pieces of the offense down the road.

Fantasy Tip: Now that Cruz has signed his tender, he and Nicks will have ample time to catch up on whatever they missed. Neither player's fantasy value should be affected.

Fri, 14 Jun 2013 08:12:10 -0700

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz said he would sign his restricted free-agent tender Friday, June 14. "I'm going to sign my tender today and will continue talks for a long-term deal before camp starts."

Fantasy Tip: Take a sigh of relief that a holdout is unlikely to occur.

Giants | Rueben Randle earning rave reviews

Thu, 13 Jun 2013 15:50:05 -0700

New York Giants WR Rueben Randle became QB Eli Manning's primary target during the absences of WRs Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz, who's still not at camp because of contract discussions. "His whole demeanor, his whole professionalism was outstanding," offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride said of Randle. "Not only did he grow, he kind of became the bell cow of the receiving corps. ... Oh, he's gonna play. He's gonna play a lot [in 2013]." Randle's versatility in where to line up should help his playing time.

Fantasy Tip: Let's wait until later this summer before we bolster Randle's stock significantly, but his late-rounds-flyer status looks to be pretty solid as of today.

Giants | Tom Coughlin talks Victor Cruz

Tue, 11 Jun 2013 14:28:43 -0700

New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin is starting to get impatient with WR Victor Cruz not being at offseason team activities. "I've been optimistic since Day 1 but it hasn't gotten me anywhere, has it?" Coughlin said after the first practice of the Giants' three-day minicamp. "I'll just continue to be (optimistic). But the clock is running. This is something that at least he could've benefited by, if nothing else, this minicamp. But you have to realize that there is no contract at this time. So without a contract he's not going to be here."

Giants | Coach believes top two WRs can get up to speed quickly

Fri, 07 Jun 2013 15:10:20 -0700

New York Giants wide receivers coach Kevin M. Gilbride said he believes it will take WRs Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks to get up to speed once they report, but they should be able to ready fairly quickly. "I think it all takes work and timing and development of your individual skills, of your grasp of the offense and the detail. I don't think it's easy, but I think those two, Victor and Hakeem, have the ability and the mental capacity to step in and basically play catch up like we talked about and get caught up pretty quickly," Gilbride said.

Giants | Eli Manning talks about players missing OTAs

Thu, 06 Jun 2013 11:22:47 -0700

New York Giants QB Eli Manning said the workouts that took place early in the offseason at Duke University were not meant to be a substitution for work that can be done during OTAs, in reference to WRs Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz missing the team workouts. "You got some work, but I was really hoping that would be a little starter course to the spring and not a substitute for what we're doing on the field right now," Manning said Thursday, following the team's OTA. "This is the stuff where you're getting to go against cornerbacks. You get to work your technique. You get to practice those things we're gonna do in the season."

Fantasy Tip: While it is not ideal that Cruz and Nicks are missing OTAs, it should not take long for them to regain their chemistry with Manning once they do return to practice.

Giants | Rueben Randle impressing

Thu, 30 May 2013 13:57:55 -0700

New York Giants WR Rueben Randle is impressing at organized team activities. Randle has lined up with the first team due to WRs Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks not attending practices. "He's moving in that direction," head coach Tom Coughlin said. "He certainly has had many, many opportunities, and if there's a guy that really has a chance to step his game up and really show what he can do, it's happening right now for Rueben."

Giants | Increased reps for other WRs

Wed, 22 May 2013 19:09:54 -0700

New York Giants WRs Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks were missing at organized team activities Wednesday, May 22, over contract disputes, so QB Eli Manning was working with WRs Jerrel Jernigan, Louis Murphy and Rueben Randle during the session.

Giants | Jerrel Jernigan taking advantage of opportunity

Wed, 22 May 2013 10:22:42 -0700

New York Giants WR Jerrel Jernigan has shown progress as Victor Cruz remains absent from OTAs. WR Hakeem Nicks said his teammate has been adjusting well to the slot role, which fits him. "I feel like he got a lot of reps," Nicks added. "He's a little older now, he's a little mature. He got more patient in his routes. ... He's catching the ball a lot better, and he's ready to step up."

Fantasy Tip: Complementary pieces to this aerial game have filled solid fantasy depth roles for the last few years. With Domenik Hixon gone, Jernigan has a chance to make more noise, but the presence of Louis Murphy and Rueben Randle probably limits his upside.

Giants | Eli Manning hopes Victor Cruz attends OTA's

Mon, 13 May 2013 17:56:54 -0700

New York Giants QB Eli Manning said he hopes WR Victor Cruz attends organized team activities next week. "We get into some real practices next week so hopefully as we get into those live going-against-the-defense practices he'll get back in so we can get back to work," Manning said.

Fantasy Tip: Even if Cruz does not attend OTA's, it should not take long for Manning to get back on the same page with his best wide receiver once the contract situation is resolved.

New York Giants co-owner John Mara believes the team will eventually have a deal in place with restricted free-agent WR Victor Cruz. "I'm pretty confident that we'll end up reaching a deal with (Cruz)," Mara said. "This is not that atypical a situation. Player contracts, particularly with star players like Victor, can tend to drag on from time to time. I think we'll get it done." Cruz has yet to sign his $2.879 million contract tender and reportedly seeks in the neighborhood of $10 million per year. The Giants are reportedly prepared to offer closer to $7 million.

Giants | Unsure if Victor Cruz will be with team Week 1

Sat, 20 Apr 2013 09:49:11 -0700

New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese said the team is not sure if restricted free-agent WR Victor Cruz will sign with the team before the start of the regular season. "I don't assume anything," Reese said. "We'll see. I can tell you this — when we get ready to play — when the season starts, we will have some good players out there. I'm not sure if Victor will be there or not."

Fantasy Tip: Cruz does not have to participate in offseason workouts because he is not under contract. There is a chance he holds out of training camp because of his contract situation but is expected to report to the team before the start of the regular season. He should still be considered as a No. 1 fantasy wide receiver entering the 2013 NFL season unless he holds out during the season.

Giants | Still no workouts for Victor Cruz

Tue, 16 Apr 2013 17:37:21 -0700

New York Giants restricted free-agent WR Victor Cruz has still not showed at voluntary offseason workouts. While it is unclear if his absence is directly related to his contract situation, his absence is noticeable. He is seeking a long-term contract extension, and wants more than the current $7 million-per-year offer sources say he has on the table from the team.

Mon, 15 Apr 2013 10:20:02 -0700

New York Giants restricted free-agent WR Victor Cruz was not present for the start of offseason workouts Monday, April 15.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz missing offseason workouts is not a big deal because he knows the offense well. If he holds out during training camp, it would be more noteworthy because his status for the regular season could be in question at that point.

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz, a restricted free-agent, was given a first-round tender by the team in March while negotiations toward a long-term deal have gone nowhere. Giants | Victor Cruz working out with Eli Manning

Wed, 10 Apr 2013 15:56:43 -0700

New York Giants restricted free-agent WR Victor Cruz has been catching passes from QB Eli Manning this week. Cruz is hoping to sign a long-term contract extension with the team to remain one of Manning's favorite targets. The Giants have until April 19 to make a contract offer to Cruz if another team wants to make a run at Cruz. New York would receive a first-round pick as compensation if they can't match another team's offer. Manning also worked out with WRs Hakeem Nicks and Louis Murphy.

Fantasy Tip: This should be seen as a good sign toward the Giants retaining their No. 1 wide receiver with a long-term deal. It remains to be seen if that will happen, however. If Cruz does return, continue to consider him a No. 1 fantasy wideout that has more appeal in non-point-per-reception leagues.
