Bears | Victor Cruz still hungry

Thu, 29 Jun 2017 11:31:22 -0700

Chicago Bears WR Victor Cruz said Wednesday, June 28, he still has something to prove every day. "You're only as good as your last catch, your last game, your last year of production. That is what you're marketed as. That is what they categorize you as, whatever your last showing is on the field," Cruz said.

Bears | Evaluating Chicago's WRs

Mon, 05 Jun 2017 06:43:58 -0700

Chicago Bears WRs Cameron Meredith (thumb), Kevin White and Markus Wheaton (shoulder) are considered locks to make the 53-man roster, in the opinion of Chicago Tribune writer Dan Wiederer. WRs Victor Cruz, Kendall Wright, Josh Bellamy, Deonte Thompson and Daniel Braverman are considered to be on the bubble. WRs Tanner Gentry, Rueben Randle and Titus Davis are viewed as long shots for the final roster.

Bears | Victor Cruz joins Bears

Thu, 25 May 2017 11:22:01 -0700

Free-agent WR Victor Cruz (Giants) is signing a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears Thursday, May 25. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: At 30 years old, Cruz is over the hill and has not played a full season since 2012. Furthermore, he'll have Mike Glennon throwing to him. He may have more opportunity for playing time than in most places in Chicago's relatively weak wide receiver corps, but Cruz would likely be cemented on fantasy benches anyway.

Giants | NYG not interested in Victor Cruz reunion

Wed, 22 Mar 2017 18:02:50 -0700

Free-agent WR Victor Cruz (Giants) is unlikely to return to the New York Giants at a lower salary, according to ESPN's Dan Graziano.

Fantasy Tip: With the addition of Brandon Marshall prior to the official start of free agency, Cruz would slot in as the No. 4 receiver on the depth chart at best behind Odell Beckham Jr., Marshall and Sterling Shepard. At the moment, his best option may be the Carolina Panthers. Either way, his days of fantasy relevancy are almost certainly over.

Panthers | Victor Cruz happy with Carolina visit

Mon, 20 Feb 2017 16:57:52 -0800

Free-agent WR Victor Cruz (Giants) said his visit with the Carolina Panthers Monday, Feb. 20, went well. No deal is imminent at this point, but it appears there is mutual interest between Cruz and the Panthers. Cruz does not have any other visits scheduled at this point.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz could meet with a few more teams before he signs with a team, but he may have to wait before he receives a deal. Cruz has dealt with injuries in the last several years but was able play 15 games in 2016 and finished with 586 yards and one touchdown. Cruz probably will be a No. 3 receiver for a team in 2017 and can be a No. 4 or No. 5 receiver for fantasy owners.

Panthers | Victor Cruz visited Panthers

Mon, 20 Feb 2017 12:13:12 -0800

Free-agent WR Victor Cruz (Giants) visited the Carolina Panthers over the weekend, according to a source. A deal is not imminent and Cruz is expected to speak with at least one other team.

Fantasy Tip: The term "washed up" was made for players like Cruz. He didn't produce much in a complementary role with the Giants last year and is clearly past his prime. For now, only draft him as a late-round option in standard leagues.

Ravens | Baltimore unlikely to look at Victor Cruz

Sat, 18 Feb 2017 11:21:46 -0800

Free-agent WR Victor Cruz (Giants) probably will not be an option for the Baltimore Ravens this offseason unless he is willing to sign for the veteran minimum, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Jamison Hensley.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz's injury history likely will limit his market, but teams looking for a slot receiver could have interest in him. He will be a risky fantasy option because of his injuries but could be a No. 4 or No. 5 receiver depending on his role.

Panthers | Victor Cruz could fit in Carolina

Fri, 17 Feb 2017 22:03:13 -0800

Free-agent WR Victor Cruz (Giants) could be pursued by the Carolina Panthers, according to beat writer David Newton. General manager Dave Gettleman has a connection with Cruz from his time with the New York Giants, and Cruz would fill Carolina's need for a slot receiver.

Broncos | Broncos plan to meet with Victor Cruz

Tue, 14 Feb 2017 20:17:44 -0800

The Denver Broncos are "working" to meet with free-agent WR Victor Cruz (Giants).

Fantasy Tip: The Broncos have plenty of salary cap space, which apparently includes enough room for some risks. Cruz would certainly qualify as one, being someone who has looked like a much different player since tearing the patellar tendon in his knee in 2014. While Denver does have a need for a No. 3 receiver, the 30-year-old still has a long road ahead back towards fantasy relevance.

NFL | Victor Cruz probably done, says scout

Mon, 13 Feb 2017 20:50:31 -0800

Free-agent WR Victor Cruz (Giants) is "probably done," according to one NFL scout.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz tore a patellar tendon in 2014, and since then, he hasn't nearly been the same, which was very evident this past season as he registered a career-low 39.1 receiving yards per game over 15 contests. He'll likely get another shot with some receiver-needy club in training camp, but it would take a long road back for him to suddenly be fantasy relevant again.

Giants | Victor Cruz released

Mon, 13 Feb 2017 11:19:00 -0800

Updating a previous report, New York Giants WR Victor Cruz was officially released Monday, Feb. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz didn't do a whole lot for the Giants last season. Lack of production, injuries and age make this a logical move for the Giants. Odell Beckham Jr. and Sterling Shephard are now at the helm of the Giants' receiving corps.

Giants | Victor Cruz to be cut

Mon, 13 Feb 2017 09:48:11 -0800

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz will be released Monday, Feb. 13, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz showed some signs of life after two years of debilitating injuries. However, he didn't show the game-breaking ability he had before he tore the patellar tendon in his knee. His final line was 39-586-1, and he'll be 31 in November. He could still be worth a WR5 flyer if he landed in the right situation.

Giants | Victor Cruz uncertain about return

Tue, 31 Jan 2017 09:01:43 -0800

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz wants to play out the final two years of his contract with the team, but he admits the "ball is in (the Giants') court" when it comes to sticking around. Cruz has a $9.4 million salary cap hit next season and will likely need to take a pay cut for the second straight season in order to stay. Cruz agreed to reduce his base salary from $7.9 million to $1.3 million for the 2016 season.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz is due a $1 million roster bonus on March 11, so that date could be one to remember in terms of his employment with the Giants. The odds are very strong he will be released sometime before then. Expect New York to address the position in the draft again this year after landing Sterling Shepard last spring.

Giants | Victor Cruz may be cap casualty

Thu, 12 Jan 2017 10:52:24 -0800

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz could be a cap casualty this offseason because the team would save $7.5 million in salary cap space if he is released. He is currently scheduled to count $9.4 million against the 2017 salary cap.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz probably will be available during free agency but could re-sign with the Giants at a lower price. He probably will be a No. 3 or No. 4 receiver no matter where he signs next season and would only be a No. 5 receiver for fantasy owners.

Giants | Victor Cruz wants to remain in New York

Mon, 09 Jan 2017 09:23:38 -0800

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz finished the season with 39 receptions for 586 yards and one touchdown after missing most of the previous two years with knee and calf injuries. He wants to return, but he is slated to make $6.4 million (and count $9.4 million against the cap) in 2017. "This is family. This is home. I don't know anywhere else. I don't want to know anywhere else," Cruz said.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz would still count for $1.9 million against the cap if he is cut in the offseason, but his release would provide $7.5 million worth of savings for the team, so he's probably done in New York unless he's willing to accept a huge pay cut. Given the expected drop-off in speed and quickness he displayed in 2016, he'll be hard-pressed to find a fantasy-worthy gig in 2017.

Giants | Eight grabs for Victor Cruz

Thu, 22 Dec 2016 21:01:18 -0800

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz had a season-high eight catches for 84 yards in a 24-19 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles Thursday, Dec. 22.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz had one of his best games of the year, but he is typically only good for a couple grabs. He can still be avoided going forward.

Giants | Victor Cruz has a long catch

Sun, 18 Dec 2016 14:22:07 -0800

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz caught a 29-yard pass from QB Eli Manning in a 17-6 win over the Detroit Lions. It was Cruz's only catch of the game.

Fantasy Tip: This may have been Cruz's finale in a Giants uniform at New York, and if so he is auditioning for a role elsewhere. Injuries have robbed Cruz of some effectiveness, but he can still salsa at the age of 30. Cruz might have some good years ahead as a WR2 or WR3 if he can recover some of the magic.

Giants | Victor Cruz sees sporadic play

Mon, 05 Dec 2016 08:20:10 -0800

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz played 26 snaps (43 percent of the offense) Sunday, Dec. 5.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz didn't have a reception or a target in Week 13, and it's pretty clear he's not heavily in the offensive game plan.

Giants | Just one grab for Victor Cruz

Sun, 27 Nov 2016 20:37:50 -0800

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz posted just one grab for 37 yards on five targets in the Week 12 game against the Cleveland Browns.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz has been limited to one catch in each of his past three games. While they have each been big plays, he just isn't getting enough looks to warrant fantasy consideration in most formats.

Giants | Victor Cruz taken off injury report

Fri, 18 Nov 2016 12:38:23 -0800

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (ankle) has been removed from the injury report ahead of his team's Week 11 tilt Sunday, Nov. 20, against the Chicago Bears. He was a limited participant in practice Friday, Nov. 18.

Fantasy Tip: Although it looks like he'll be able to return after missing last week's Monday Night bout opposite the Bengals, Cruz isn't really an option for most leagues, as he's merely been just a background player for the Giants this season. He hasn't scored a touchdown since Week 1, and in his last outing, he managed only one reception. Cruz can be avoided outside the deepest of leagues.

Giants | Full practice for Victor Cruz

Thu, 17 Nov 2016 10:40:03 -0800

Updating a previous report, New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (ankle) fully participated in practice Thursday, Nov. 17. Offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan said Cruz was moving around well during practice.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz likely will be able to play in Week 11 unless he suffers a setback in the next few days. He should receive a decent amount of targets during the game and can be a flex option for owners.

Giants | Victor Cruz practicing

Thu, 17 Nov 2016 09:24:25 -0800

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (ankle) was participating during the media access portion of practice Thursday, Nov. 17.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz was not able to play in Week 10 but looks like he will have a solid chance to play this week if he does not suffer an injury. He will be a risky option because of the injury if he plays but could be a flex option in deeper leagues.

Giants | Limited practice for Victor Cruz

Wed, 16 Nov 2016 13:49:51 -0800

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (ankle) was a limited participant in practice Wednesday, Nov. 16.

Fantasy Tip: Don't trust Cruz to produce right out of the gate after an extended absence, even in a favorable matchup against the Chicago Bears. It's best to wait and see how his ankle reacts to a return to the field, if he does indeed return.

Giants | Victor Cruz should practice Thursday

Tue, 15 Nov 2016 14:00:40 -0800

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (ankle) is expected to return to practice Thursday, Nov. 17, according to head coach Ben McAdoo.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz has done little in his comeback season so far, and he may still be hampered if/when he returns in Week 11. Odell Beckham Jr. and Sterling Shepherd should remain New York's top two receiving options. Cruz is just too risky to start even in a plus matchup with the Chicago Bears.

Giants | Victor Cruz ruled out for MNF

Mon, 14 Nov 2016 11:21:41 -0800

Updating a previous story, New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (ankle) will not play in Week 10 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Fantasy Tip: Roger Lewis figures to get the start and should see a ton of snaps as the Giants use as many three-wide sets as any team in the league. Dwayne Harris may also factor in as well, but Cruz's absence means Eli Manning will probably rely more heavily on Odell Beckham Jr. and Sterling Shepard more often this evening.

Giants | Victor Cruz likely a no-go for MNF

Mon, 14 Nov 2016 09:52:14 -0800

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (ankle) is not expected to play Monday, Nov. 14, to end Week 10 against the Cincinnati Bengals. While Cruz was encouraged by how his ankle felt during treatment this week, the team is reportedly choosing to play it cautious.

Fantasy Tip: Roger Lewis has one catch in each of the last three weeks as he has started to mix in with Cruz and found the end zone on two of those opportunities. It's hard to get too excited about him in fantasy tonight despite the likely increased opportunities he will see and big-play ability he has already flashed, so only owners who were counting on Cruz going tonight should consider him as an option.

Giants | Victor Cruz likely out

Mon, 14 Nov 2016 07:06:10 -0800

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (ankle) is unlikely to play in Week 10 Monday, Nov. 14. WR Roger Lewis will likely fill in for Cruz.

Fantasy Tip: Lewis has two touchdowns during the last three games. However, he only has three catches and six targets all year. He's a desperation play if you need a flex option to replace an injured player or a bye week for Monday night.

Giants | Victor Cruz questionable for MNF

Sat, 12 Nov 2016 10:29:33 -0800

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (ankle) has yet to participate in practice this week and is listed as questionable for Week 10 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Fantasy Tip: If Cruz sits out as expected, Roger Lewis would be worth considering as a low-end flex option in deeper leagues. While Odell Beckham Jr. could see a bump in targets as well, Sterling Shepard should see the biggest increase in targets and could make the case to be a WR3 on Monday night.

Giants | Victor Cruz unable to practice

Fri, 11 Nov 2016 17:32:21 -0800

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (ankle) did not practice Friday, Nov. 11, missing his second consecutive day.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz is a question mark for the Monday night game against the Cincinnati Bengals. It's a good idea to keep him reserved in all fantasy leagues if you normally depend upon him.

Giants | Victor Cruz unable to practice Friday

Fri, 11 Nov 2016 13:30:58 -0800

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (ankle) is "making progress" but did not participate in practice Friday, Nov. 11, according to head coach Ben McAdoo.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz was at least usable in fantasy over the first month of the season, but he has struggled to be a factor since Week 4. Roger Lewis has been coming on a bit of late with a pair of touchdowns over the last three games, but his role is far too inconsistent at the moment. If Cruz sits or is limited this week, it should free up a few more targets for Sterling Shepard.

Giants | Victor Cruz not practicing

Thu, 10 Nov 2016 09:52:05 -0800

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (ankle) is not participating in practice Thursday, Nov. 10.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to check on Cruz's status later in the week to see if he has a chance to play in Week 10. He will be a risky option for owners since he plays on Monday Night Football. Cruz has posted average numbers over the last few weeks but has not scored a touchdown since Week 1. Owners probably will be able to find better options to use.

Giants | Victor Cruz shouldn't be out long

Tue, 08 Nov 2016 13:06:09 -0800

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (ankle) said he might miss just one game after suffering a low-grade right ankle sprain in Week 9.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz is dangerously close to being irrelevant in the fantasy realm, if he's not there already. He's not a recommended start even if he does play this week.

Giants | Victor Cruz suffered a sprain

Sun, 06 Nov 2016 16:38:41 -0800

Updating a previous report, New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (ankle) suffered a sprained ankle in the Week 9 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. His injury is not believed to be serious, although he'll have more tests Monday, Nov. 7.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz finished with just one grab for 46 yards on one target. When healthy Cruz is only worth a look as a WR4 in deeper fantasy leagues at this point.

Giants | Victor Cruz ruled out

Sun, 06 Nov 2016 12:14:01 -0800

Updating a previous report, New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (ankle) is out for the remainder of the game Sunday, Nov. 6, against the Philadelphia Eagles due to an ankle injury.

Fantasy Tip: As the previous tip suggested, stay tuned to see if the Giants have to go in another direction with Cruz out, and also watch how long Cruz may be out.

Giants | Victor Cruz goes to locker room

Sun, 06 Nov 2016 11:21:15 -0800

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (ankle) suffered an ankle injury in Week 9 and went to the locker room to undergo X-rays. He is considered questionable to return.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to keep an eye on the situation to see if Cruz will have to miss time because of the injury. He has posted decent numbers this season and can be a No. 3 receiver or a flex option if he is healthy. Sterling Shepard probably would receive more targets if Cruz misses time and can be a No. 3 receiver.

Sat, 29 Oct 2016 17:56:59 -0700

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz said he is feeling great and is finally 100 percent healthy following knee and groin injuries.

Giants | Victor Cruz catches five passes

Sun, 23 Oct 2016 10:07:55 -0700

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz caught five passes for 55 yards against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 7.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz has been targeted at least seven times in three of the last four games but has not posted more than 55 yards in any of those games. Cruz could be a flex option in some deeper leagues but can be avoided in most standard leagues.

Giants | Victor Cruz busy under the lights

Mon, 03 Oct 2016 20:58:39 -0700

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz was targeted nine times in the Week 4 game against the Minnesota Vikings, posting 50 yards on five receptions Monday, Oct. 3.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz hasn't made it all the way back yet, but he has posted 50 or more yards in each of his past three games while averaging four grabs per game in his four outings so far this season. Cruz is worth using as a low-end WR3 in most fantasy formats.

Giants | Victor Cruz believes breakout is close

Sat, 01 Oct 2016 17:43:22 -0700

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz said the offense hasn't lived up to its potential yet, but he believes a breakout performance is close.

Fantasy Tip: Cruz has 161 receiving yards in the last two games, but since he is No. 3 in the pecking order for targets, his value is limited to deeper PPR formats.

Sun, 18 Sep 2016 06:08:27 -0700

New York Giants WRs Odell Beckham Jr. and Victor Cruz were each fined $12,124 by the NFL for a group celebration during Week 1's game against the Dallas Cowboys, according to a league source.

Fantasy Tip: Beckham had four catches for 73 yards in the season opener, while Cruz caught four passes for 34 yards and a touchdown in his first game in nearly two years. Both players have favorable matchups for Week 2's contest against the New Orleans Saints.

Giants | Victor Cruz realistic entering 2016

Sat, 10 Sep 2016 09:38:56 -0700

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz, who took a total of 38 preseason snaps this summer after missing all the 2015 season with a calf injury, has missed his team's last 26 contests. However, he will play his first game in 700 days when the Giants visit the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1. "I can't do it," Cruz said when asked about being able to reach the gaudy numbers he posted prior to tearing his patellar tendon in 2014. "I just have to play and think about what I'm doing out there on that field, and not setting (numerical) goals and expectations."

Fantasy Tip: Any contribution from Cruz at all should be considered a bonus by the Giants and fantasy owners. Patellar tendon tears are among the most devastating injuries an athlete can suffer and no player to date has been able to recapture his pre-injury form after receiving such a diagnosis. If he merely serves as a viable threat while Odell Beckham Jr. and rookie Sterling Shepard carry the passing game, he will be doing his job. Consider Cruz nothing more than a WR5 in fantasy.

Thu, 01 Sep 2016 20:24:57 -0700

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz failed to record a catch in the preseason finale against the New England Patriots Thursday, Sept. 1, but he said he is "slowly but surely" regaining his quickness and ability to create separation.

Fantasy Tip: Injuries have derailed Cruz's promising career, and he is no more than a late-round flier at this point.
