Wed, 21 Aug 2013 15:15:20 -0700
New England Patriots TE Zach Sudfeld looks like a lock to enter Week 1 as the team's No. 1 tight end if TE Rob Gronkowski (back, forearm) starts the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Sudfeld is 6-foot-7, 260 pounds, which is almost the exact same size as Gronkowski. Sudfeld caught a touchdown pass the team's preseason game last weekend in the red zone on a pattern that Gronkowski has run before. Sudfeld displayed nice run-after-the-catch skills on another play later in the same preseason game. TE Jake Ballard is healthy and has been consistent in camp, too, and his role as a hybrid tight end in the past is similar to Gronkowski.
Fantasy Tip: Sudfeld is emerging as a sleeper candidate at tight end that's worth taking a shot on in the later rounds as a TE2. He's got a great QB throwing him passes in Tom Brady, and his size makes him a nice red zone target.
Mon, 19 Aug 2013 13:00:56 -0700
New England Patriots TEs Jake Ballard and Zach Sudfeld appear to have solid grips on roster spots at this point.
Wed, 14 Aug 2013 16:08:23 -0700
New England Patriots TE Zach Sudfeld took the majority of first-team repetitions in practice Tuesday, Aug. 13, while TEs Daniel Fells and Jake Ballard were on the sidelines. Fells and Ballard are now battling for a roster spot.
Fantasy Tip: Sudfeld is clearly now the No. 1 tight end in training camp, but it remains to be seen if it will stay that way entering Week 1. If Rob Gronkowski (elbow, back) opens on the PUP, Sudfeld will see extensive action in the offense. However, he's still a deep sleeper for fantasy purposes and is more of a TE3.
Fri, 09 Aug 2013 11:48:36 -0700

Fri, 28 Jun 2013 19:30:27 -0700
New England Patriots TE Jake Ballard (knee) is making his way back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, and he reportedly looking "rigid" during organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp.
Fantasy Tip: Ballard has plenty of time to loosen up before the regular season, and he showed some glimpses of brilliance pre-injury during his days with the New York Giants. With Rob Gronkowski (back) making his way back from surgery, and Aaron Hernandez gone, Ballard has a chance to step up. He could re-emerge as a low-end TE1 in fantasy leagues at some point, but don't get too carried away early on.
Fri, 21 Jun 2013 07:05:10 -0700
New England Patriots TE Jake Ballard (knee) is almost 100 percent.
Tue, 18 Jun 2013 15:45:46 -0700
New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (back, forearm), who underwent surgery to fix a spinal issue in his back Tuesday, June 18, has hopes of returning to action late in August, during the preseason. However, Gronkowski isn't a lock to be ready for Week 1 of the regular season. He's likely to begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list but will be eligible to come off at any point before Week 1.
Fantasy Tip: We won't know how realistic it'll be for Gronkowski to suit up for Week 1 until we get closer to training camp, but there remains a good possibility that he will miss the first part of the season. Aaron Hernandez's draft stock will soar if that's the case, and Jake Ballard might become a nice matchup play earlier in the year, too.
Fri, 31 May 2013 08:37:54 -0700
New England Patriots TE Jake Ballard (knee) has not fully participated during the two organized team activities that the media has watched this offseason but has shown good hands during offensive drills. He also has been running with a noticeable limp.
Fantasy Tip: Ballard could get a bigger role than expected this season if he is healthy because of the injuries to Rob Gronkowski (back, forearm) and TE Aaron Hernandez (shoulder). At this point, Ballard probably is not worthy of a draft choice but he would be a waiver wire target if either Gronkowski or Hernandez miss time in the regular season.
Wed, 29 May 2013 14:01:34 -0700
New England Patriots TE Jake Ballard (knee) has looked sharp during organized team activities and hasn't been limited after having major knee surgery around 16 months ago. Ballard has shown nice hands and will be a nice blocking asset for the team this year. "I'm doing my best I can to be 100 percent, and I'm doing as much as I can, as much as they're allowing me to do out here," Ballard said. "When I'm out here I feel like I'm putting in good work and getting better."
Fantasy Tip: Rob Gronkowski (forearm, back) has become a major health risk and Aaron Hernandez (shoulder) is coming off a surgery of his own this offseason. If both Gronk and Hernandez are healthy and on the field, Ballard won't see much of a role aside from blocking. However, Gronk and Hernandez have both struggled to stay healthy, so Ballard could be a nice waiver wire addition at some point this season.
