The San Diego Padres cut their roster to 47 players Friday, March 11, reports Corey Brock, of MLB.com. The team optioned Ps Simon Castro, Jeremy Hefner, Evan Scribner and Aaron Poreda to Triple-A Tucson. C Luis Martinez was also sent to Tucson. IF Jeudy Valdez was optioned to Class A Lake Elsinore. The team also reassigned P Anthony Bass, IFs James Darnell, Andrew Parrino and Anthony Rizzo to their minor league camp. C Jason Hagerty was also moved to the minor league camp.

The San Diego Padres may look to acquire Baltimore Orioles 3B Miguel Tejada or Boston Red Sox SS Jed Lowrie as the trade deadline nears, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune's Bill Center. The Orioles are apparently seeking a high price in exchange for Tejada. The Padres believe Tejada could be used in the middle infield as well as the outfield. Ps Cory Luebke and/or Simon Castro could be dealt to acquire Tejada.

The San Diego Padres have no plans to rush minor league P Simon Castro despite his strong start, according to MLB.com's Corey Brock. He is 2-0 with a 1.11 ERA through four starts at Double-A San Antonio and opponents are hitting .183 against him. Castro, who was the organization's minor league pitcher of the year in 2009, has allowed just 15 hits over 24 1/3 innings this season.
