Mariners | Carter Capps to be setup man

Wed, 17 Apr 2013 16:45:36 -0700

Seattle Mariners manager Eric Wedge said Wednesday, April 17, that RP Carter Capps will be the setup man to RP Tom Wilhelmsen, with RP Oliver Perez likely the late-inning guy when the team is ahead.

Fantasy Tip: Wilhelmsen is the clear-cut closer in Seattle, and the skipper might mix and match with Capps and Perez as setup men late in games when they are ahead. Wilhelmsen is a must-have in all AL-only leagues and some deeper mixed formats, while Capps and Perez are only worth a look in deeper AL rotisserie play for help in the ERA and WHIP categories.

Wed, 25 Jul 2012 13:25:46 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Tom Wilhelmsen has begun to throw a changeup to give himself three pitches to use during outings. Mariners | Brandon League inconsistent

Wed, 27 Jun 2012 14:05:55 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Brandon League's inconsistency has kept him from regaining the closer role this year. "He's been a little bit inconsistent," manager Eric Wedge said. "Last night he wasn't at his best. There's times when we've seen him really good, too. Just need more consistency out of him, we need to know what we're going to be getting when we call for him." Wedge wants to see more breaking pitches earlier in the count from League, and he wants League to have more confidence in his slider. RP Tom Wilhelmsen has closed out all six of his chances and hasn't allowed a run in his last 15 2/3 frames over 13 outings.

Mariners | Brandon League could return to closer's role

Sun, 10 Jun 2012 17:21:53 -0700

Seattle Mariners manager Eric Wedge said Sunday, June 10, that RP Brandon League could soon be returned to the closer's role. League has pitched well in six non-save situations since his demotion from the closer's role, posting a 1.35 ERA with three holds in six games since May 28. "The reason we went with everybody in the bullpen instead of just one guy when we pulled Brandon back is I didn't want to put that heat on one guy," Wedge said. "And I still feel that way. Truth of the matter is, we still have a lot of young kids in the bullpen. If things keep on track with Brandon and he gets another shot to close, that doesn't mean (RP Tom Wilhelmsen) or somebody else won't get a chance to closer from time to time. You want to have options."

Mariners | Six pitchers combine for no-hitter

Fri, 08 Jun 2012 21:57:06 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Kevin Millwood (groin) left his start Friday, June 8, against the Los Angeles Dodgers due to a mild groin strain. RPs Charlie Furbush, Stephen Pryor, Lucas Luetge, Brandon League and Tom Wilhelmsen combined to work three hitless innings of relief to preserve the no-hitter. The six-pitcher effort ties the Houston Astros (2003) for the major league record of pitchers to combine for a no-hitter.
