Rangers | Keone Kela out 12 weeks

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 16:54:12 -0700

Texas Rangers RP Keone Kela (elbow) will be out roughly 12 weeks after having surgery to remove a bone spur from his right elbow Friday, April 22. RP Tom Wilhelmsen will now be asked to help cover the sixth and seventh innings with Kela out.

Fantasy Tip: Kela was serving as the seventh-inning setup man for Texas but can now be dropped in any leagues that he was owned. If you're looking for a possible saves contributor in Texas, look to Sam Dyson.

Rangers | Tom Wilhelmsen avoids arbitration

Wed, 13 Jan 2016 11:23:00 -0800

Texas Rangers RP Tom Wilhelmsen avoided arbitration by signing a one-year, $3.1 million deal Wednesday, Jan. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Wilhemsen is a decent ratios/holds/K's guy with Shawn Tolleson firmly entrenched as the closer. Look for Wilhemsen at the end of drafts.

Rangers | Texas adds Tom Wilhelmsen

Mon, 16 Nov 2015 14:56:58 -0800

The Texas Rangers acquired RP Tom Wilhelmsen from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for OF Leonys Martin Monday, Nov. 16, according to sources. There are expected to be other players involved in the deal.

Fantasy Tip: Wilhelmsen has closer experience, but he is likely best suited for a set-up role. Therefore, his fantasy value is limited to AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues, and even there he is a low-end option. However, he is an arm to watch, as he could land in save situations given his experience.

Mariners | Tom Wilhelmsen unavilable

Thu, 24 Sep 2015 14:42:32 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Tom Wilhelmsen will not pitch against the Kansas City Royals Thursday, Sept. 24.

Fantasy Tip: Carson Smith projects to grab a potential save opportunity, and he could be worth a flier add for any saves chasers. Though, it will likely be a one-time chance. Wilhelmsen blew the save Wednesday, Sept. 23, but he has converted 10 of 11 opportunities with a 0.66 ERA since Sunday, Aug. 23, and he is producing as a tier-two closer of late.

Mariners | Tom Wilhelmsen remains M's closer

Wed, 26 Aug 2015 12:20:24 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Tom Wilhelmsen remains the team's closer for now, according to manager Lloyd McClendon. Wilhelmsen has done well in his first two save chances.

Fantasy Tip: Wilhelmsen should obviously be owned in all leagues now. Carson Smith, who was closing before, is still worth owning in deeper leagues because of his solid peripherals, and there remains a chance that he could see some save chances here and there down the stretch.

Mariners | Tom Wilhelmsen in line for saves

Mon, 24 Aug 2015 15:41:22 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Tom Wilhelmsen will pitch in a closing situation if the team has the lead Monday, Aug. 24, according to manager Lloyd McClendon.

Fantasy Tip: Those chasing the category in seasonal leagues could grab Wilhelmsen in the hopes he can land a tally in the save column Monday. But it is also a clear indication of who is up next behind closer Carson Smith, so Wilhelmsen could have a few more opportunities to convert saves before the end of the season.

Mariners | Tom Wilhelmsen earns the save

Sun, 23 Aug 2015 19:49:19 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Tom Wilhelmsen earned his third save of the season Sunday, Aug. 23, against the Chicago White Sox.

Fantasy Tip: With Carson Smith slumping, it looks like Wilhelmsen could see some save chances. Don't give up on Smith just yet, but Wilhelmsen could be worth adding if you are hunting for saves.

Mariners | Tom Wihelmsen earns first save

Thu, 23 Jul 2015 19:37:06 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Tom Wilhelmsen earned his first save of the season in a 3-2 win over the Detroit Tigers Thursday, July 23.

Fantasy Tip: The game went into extra innings, forcing Wihelmsen to close things out after closer Carson Smith pitched earlier in the game. Wihelmsen owns an unimpressive 4.45 ERA and 1.76 WHIP, so don't expect his save chances to come around very often.

Mariners | M's not overreacting on Fernando Rodney

Thu, 16 Apr 2015 10:09:17 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney has had a couple of bad outings of late, including a blown save and loss against the Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday, April 14, but manager Lloyd McClendon plans to ride out the storm with Rodney. Last year, Rodney blew just three saves in 51 attempts, but he also allowed at least one runner in 47 of 69 outings, including 34 of his 51 save chances. If McClendon chooses to go in another direction, RPs Danny Farquhar and Tom Wilhelmsen (on the disabled list) have closing experience, and RP Carson Smith has closer's stuff.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney owners should be a bit worried by his early-season struggles, especially at age 38. Rodney likely has somewhat of a long leash because of his 2014 season in Seattle, but saves poachers should be looking at Yoervis Medina and Farquhar in case Rodney continues to stumble. Smith is an intriguing bullpen arm, but he might be too far down the pecking order to matter.

Mariners | Tom Wilhelmsen loses arbitration case

Sat, 21 Feb 2015 12:04:47 -0800

The Seattle Mariners have won their arbitration case against RP Tom Wilhelmsen. He will make $1.4 million during the 2015 season instead of the $2.2 million he had requested.

Fantasy Tip: Seattle considered turning Wilhelmsen into a starter last season but it appears he will remain in the bullpen for the time being. As it stands right now, he only possesses value in deep AL-only leagues.
