St. Louis Cardinals RP Sam Freeman (shoulder) is expected to have an MRI taken of his left shoulder and arm as early as Tuesday, March 5, to explore the cause of pain in his arm and shoulder. The discomfort is similar to what Freeman experienced in the Arizona Fall League last year and why his turn there ended.

After left biceps tendonitis shortened his stay in the Arizona Fall League, St. Louis Cardinals P Sam Freeman (arm) was instructed to alter his offseason throwing plans. Freeman picked up a baseball and walked around holding it so he could get used to the feel of the ball in his hand. Freeman did this so he could work on a knuckle curve. "I figured I didn't have anything else to do," Freeman said. "So outside of eating, I would carry a ball around and work on the grip."

St. Louis Cardinals pitching coach Derek Lindquist said none of the starting pitchers coming to camp will be on any restrictions this spring. SP Adam Wainwright threw a bullpen session Thursday, Feb. 7, the fifth or sixth time he's done so this offseason. SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) threw off flat ground, and he's thrown off a mound five times already in the last few weeks. He'll throw a bullpen session as early as Friday, Feb. 8. "Just based on seeing him throw one time he looks healthy, he's in good shape," Lilliquist said of Garcia. "In talking to him, mentally he's in a good spot. He's excited about the year moving forward and looks to make every start every fifth day." Ps Trevor Rosenthal, Eric Fornataro, Tyler Lyons and Sam Freeman all threw bullpen sessions as well Thursday.

St. Louis Cardinals RP Marc Rzepczynski is the only left-handed reliever on the team's National League Division Series roster. RP Sam Freeman, C Bryan Anderson and INF Ryan Jackson did not make the NLDS roster even though they were active for the team's Wild Card game against the Atlanta Braves Friday, Oct. 5.
