Detroit Lions DE Willie Young said he considered amputating the middle finger he injured three weeks ago. Young said the finger was cut to the bone and some of the nerves in the finger were severed. The cut was too deep for stitches so he has been soaking the finger in various chemicals and disinfectants. Young has not missed any practices or games despite the injury.

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said Tuesday, July 3, that DL Willie Young was a player who has made vast improvements and can help the team toward its goal of reaching the playoffs in a second straight season. Teammates added that Young's work ethic in the weight room has made him a better player and better conditioned.

Detroit Lions DL Willie Young is having an exceptional offseason workout season while taking advantage of the absence of franchise free-agent DL Cliff Avril and the limited workload of DL Kyle Vanden Bosch. Young is down almost 10 pounds from last season and has shown excellent burst off the edge. "I'm just a lot more knowledgeable," Young said of his game earlier this offseason. "I think the older guys have played a big role as far as keeping me ready. There are so many tricks to the trade in this game and you really need the older guys to help get you going and expose you to the stuff you need to be aware of."
