The Green Bay Packers feel the need to find a lead back heading into the 2013 season, and that man may not be on the current roster. The Packers shuffled through as many as six running backs this season and weren't satisfied with any of their options. Among the unrestricted free agents they could target this offseason include St. Louis Rams RB Steven Jackson, Miami Dolphins RB Reggie Bush, Dallas Cowboys RB Felix Jones and New York Jets RB Shonn Greene. Green Bay would likely be interested in Jackson in the secondary market because he'll be 30 this year.
The Packers had some success using RBs DuJuan Harris, Alex Green and James Starks, but only enough to occasionally draw an opponent's safety into the box. "If you're running the ball and they're closing the middle of the field and bringing an extra guy down, it obviously plays to our strengths as a pass group," running backs coach Alex Van Pelt said. "There were times when I thought we forced their hand and they had to stop it, but we'd obviously like to be more consistent and more productive from start to finish." Harris has plenty of potential, but his lack of size led him to wear down at the end. Green Bay is unlikely to take another chance with RB Cedric Benson and the team might not be willing to pay Starks $1.323 million given his injury history.

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) is dealing with a bone bruise in his right knee, and head coach Mike McCarthy plans to have him back for the playoffs. "Yeah, it's a lot better," Starks said. "Just how I was bent, when you look at it, it looked a lot worse. So I just thank God for being able to possibly come back and do well. So no real, serious bad injuries." Starks hasn't been able to practice but he's been staying busy in the weight room. In his absence, the Packers have gone with a combination of RBs Alex Green, DuJuan Harris and Ryan Grant.

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) suffered a knee injury in Week 13 against the Minnesota Vikings, and according to an NFL source, it is serious enough that he might not play again the rest of the season. The source said the team is mulling placing Starks on season-ending Injured Reserve. "It's not an ACL," the source said, adding that the early evaluation was that the injury would not likely require surgery.
Fantasy Tip: If Starks is done for the season, that would leave RB Alex Green in line for a lion's share of the carries, with FB John Kuhn also figuring in. RBs Johnny White and DuJuan Harris would provide depth. Green is a must-have off the waiver wire right now.

Green had no carries and was only in for six offensive snaps. The Packers felt Starks left some yards on the field. Green Bay Packers RB Alex Green will get the first carry in the team's Week 6 game. After that, however, head coach Mike McCarthy said he will go with the "hot hand" between Green, RB James Starks and RB Brandon Saine. All three running backs received first-team reps in practice Wednesday, Oct. 10. "Alex and James both got reps today and so did Brandon Saine," McCarthy said. "The first carry will be Alex Green. He's a little farther ahead than James is right now and that's the way we'll go. But we have three halfbacks and we'll utilize all three of them."
Fantasy Tip: Owners must take a wait-and-see approach when it comes to the Packers' backfield at this point as it appears to be a fluid situation. Green may be the man moving forward, but keep a close eye on how the carries are distributed in Week 6 to get a better idea.

RB Alex Green had a big run in the team's Week 5 games, but the team is worried about his protection issues. "Alex did some good things, and there's some things he'll definitely learn from," head coach Mike McCarthy said. "He obviously had the big run there, did a great job there and a nice job on the trap play. But there's some protection opportunities that we need to clean up and the course of certain runs. (He's) a young guy that took advantage of an opportunity, and this will be an opportunity for him and James and Brandon to play this week against Houston." RB Brandon Saine could also be mixed in.
