Orioles | Zach Britton could pitch this week

Mon, 02 May 2016 10:38:29 -0700

The MRI results are unknown for Baltimore Orioles RP Zach Britton (ankle), but he is feeling much better and could pitch in the series against the New York Yankees this week.

Fantasy Tip: Britton is day-to-day right now and looks like he'll avoid the DL. If he misses any save opportunities this week, Darren O'Day is likely to see chances in the ninth inning. Scoop him up immediately if he's available in your league and you're seeking saves, but keep in mind it could be short-lived.

Orioles | Zach Britton hopes to avoid DL

Mon, 02 May 2016 09:31:56 -0700

Baltimore Orioles RP Zach Britton (ankle) is hoping to avoid the disabled list. However, he was using crutches when he spoke to reporters Sunday, May 1, and was in a walking boot. "It feels pretty good compared to yesterday, how it feels this morning, but it's still some tenderness in there and obviously I'm not walking great. I think you've got to walk fine before I can even start pitching again. Hopefully, it's just a few days and I can maybe throw a bullpen or something, or at least run on it and see how it feels," Britton said. Manager Buck Showalter said Britton remains day-to-day, and Showalter would not name a closer with Britton out.

Fantasy Tip: It's really up in the air what Showalter may do in the ninth if Britton is unavailable. The O's could elect to keep Darren O'Day in an eighth-inning setup role, which would set up Brad Brach or Mychal Givens for save chances. O'Day and Brach should be your first targets if you're looking for saves, but keep in mind this could be a fluid situation. And Britton may not miss much time when it's all said and done.

Orioles | MRI slated for Zach Britton on Monday

Sun, 01 May 2016 14:56:16 -0700

Baltimore Orioles RP Zach Britton (ankle) is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday, May 2, after injuring his left ankle in a loss to the Chicago White Sox on Saturday, April 30.

Fantasy Tip: X-rays came back negative on Sunday, but the Orioles want to do their due diligence to make sure there is nothing wrong structurally. Darren O'Day is the most likely reliever to take over as the closer should Britton miss time, so he is probably worth a speculative add for any owner desperate for saves.

Orioles | Brad Brach, Mychal Givens could close

Sun, 01 May 2016 08:36:03 -0700

Updating a previous report, if Baltimore Orioles RP Zach Britton (ankle) misses an extended amount of time due to a sprained left ankle, RPs Brad Brach and Mychal Givens appear to be the most likely candidates to receive save opportunities. P Dylan Bundy is considered a long-shot to be used in a ninth-inning role because of his low strikeout totals, as well as the fact that the team may decide to stretch him out so that he can be used as a starter later this year.

Fantasy Tip: At this point, Britton is considered day-to-day and he is looking to avoid his first stint on the disabled list since 2012. He is one of the top closers in the game and should remain stashed in all fantasy formats. Brach appears to have an edge over Givens because of his extensive closing experience as a minor leaguer in the San Diego Padres' organization, while Givens has struggled mightily versus left-handed batters this year. Lefties are hitting .533 against Givens in 2016, while righties are batting just .182. Brach and Givens are worth adding in AL-only fantasy leagues, as well as in any other format if you're desperate for saves.

Orioles | Zach Britton nursing ankle sprain

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 22:17:12 -0700

Baltimore Orioles RP Zach Britton (ankle) suffered a sprained left ankle in the ninth inning of the game Saturday, April 30, against the Chicago White Sox. He is considered day to day. Britton hasn't been on the 15-day disabled list since 2012.

Fantasy Tip: If Britton is forced to miss time Brad Brach or Dylan Bundy might be used for ninth-inning duties. Fantasy owners should reserve Britton until he can officially return and prove his health in a full appearance without any setbacks.

Orioles | Zach Britton cruises through two innings

Wed, 16 Mar 2016 15:32:31 -0700

Baltimore Orioles RP Zach Britton threw two scoreless innings with just two infield hits allowed and two strikeouts during a Class A game Wednesday, March 16.

Fantasy Tip: Britton has 73 saves over the past two seasons with 141 strikeouts through 142 innings to go along with an excellent 1.77 ERA and 0.94 WHIP. Additionally, he induced a high-end 79.1% ground-ball rate and improved his FIP to 2.01 in 2015. While Britton isn't being ranked or drafted as a top-tier closer, his numbers are extremely close. He is a ripe value to target in the middle rounds.

Orioles | Zach Britton avoids arbitration

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 15:40:15 -0800

Baltimore Orioles RP Zach Britton re-signed a one-year, $6.75 million contract to avoid arbitration Friday, Feb. 5.

Fantasy Tip: Britton has 73 saves over the past two seasons with a 1.77 ERA, a 0.94 WHIP and a 8.9 K/9. His 77.0 ground-ball percentage is equally impressive, and Britton checks out as a second-tier closer. He is an excellent target to hone in on after the top options come off the draft board on draft day.

Orioles | Zach Britton files for arbitration

Sun, 17 Jan 2016 08:01:30 -0800

Baltimore Orioles CL Zach Britton has filed for salary arbitration. He is seeking a one-year deal worth $7.9 million while the team has countered with a $5.6 million offer.

Fantasy Tip: In 64 appearances last season, Britton went 4-1 with a 1.92 ERA and 36 saves. He struck out 79 batters over 65 2/3 innings and led the American League in games finished (58) while making the All-Star team for the first time in his career. He should be one of the first closers selected in all fantasy formats.

Orioles | Zach Britton draws interest

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 10:23:44 -0800

Baltimore Orioles RP Zach Britton has drawn interest from other teams, but it looks as though the Orioles prefer to hang onto him for now.

Fantasy Tip: The situation with Aroldis Chapman is making other closers more intriguing in trades now. Britton has back-to-back years of 35-plus saves for the O's, and he's had a sub-2.00 ERA in two straight years, too, making him pretty valuable in the closing picture. If he were to be dealt, Darren O'Day would become much more attractive to fantasy owners.

Orioles | Zach Britton making progress

Fri, 25 Sep 2015 18:15:55 -0700

Baltimore Orioles RP Zach Britton (lat) said he played catch, threw long-toss, pitched of flat ground and threw 10-15 pitches from the mound Friday, Sept. 25, and he said he thinks he could return to action Saturday, Sept. 26.

Fantasy Tip: It sounds like Britton should be back in action in the next day or two, but don't be surprised if he is put in the game in some non-save situations to ease him back in. You don't need to rush him back into your lineup until he is back handling ninth inning duties.
