Dallas Cowboys SS Barry Church (Achilles') said he believes he is a leading candidate for one of the starting safety jobs this season. Church received medical clearance last week to fully participate in organized team activities.

Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said Friday, Feb. 22, that SS Barry Church (Achilles') is progressing nicely after surgery to repair a torn Achilles' tendon five months ago. "Ahead of schedule and going great," Garrett said. "And he played really well for us when he played early on." Church has resumed running in his rehab, and he said after the season he hoped to be at 100 percent for the team's offseason conditioning program.

Dallas Cowboys scouting director Larry Lacewell explained in the team's new 4-3 Tampa 2 defensive scheme, a lot of pressure can be put on the safeties to cover the post, and it could be a potential problem. He acknowledged SS Barry Church is a fit in new defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin's system, but was less than excited about SS Gerald Sensabaugh. "I'd say they're more in hunt of two safeties than any other position," Lacewell said of the team's needs.

The Dallas Cowboys offered SS Barry Church (Achilles') a new contract before he suffered his season-ending injury but Church did not turn down the offer or make a counteroffer before the injury. The team likely will not allow him to accept the offer now and probably will wait to see him play again before signing him to a contract. Church will be a restricted free agent this offseason.
