Bills | C.J. Spiller undergoes surgery

Mon, 20 Oct 2014 11:57:00 -0700

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (collarbone) underwent surgery Monday, Oct. 20, to repair his broken collarbone. Head coach Doug Marrone said he will have to wait to hear from the doctors about a timetable.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller probably will miss most, if not all, of the rest of the season because of the injury. Anthony Dixon and Bryce Brown likely will share the work until Fred Jackson comes back. They could be flex options on FantasyScore depending on their price.

Bills | C.J. Spiller out for season

Mon, 20 Oct 2014 05:26:39 -0700

Updating previous reports, Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (collarbone) is out for the season, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Expect to see a mixture of Anthony Dixon and Bryce Brown. Brown had a phenomenal preseason and is very similar to Spiller. He's a home run hitter and could have been starting for a few other teams in the league. Keep an eye out this week to see if the team tips their hand as to what they plan to do at running back.

Bills | C.J. Spiller to have surgery Monday

Sun, 19 Oct 2014 15:52:51 -0700

Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (collarbone) will have surgery Monday, Oct. 20, to repair the broken collarbone he suffered in Week 7 against the Minnesota Vikings. Head coach Doug Marrone said Sunday, Oct. 19, that Spiller will be out "an undetermined time."

Fantasy Tip: With Spiller sidelined, and Fred Jackson also going down with an injury, Anthony Dixon will be a hot property off the waiver wire in seasonal leagues, and he is worth watching going forward in FantasyScore.

Sun, 19 Oct 2014 11:55:16 -0700

Updating previous reports, Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (collarbone) has been initially diagnosed with a broken collarbone.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller likely will miss most of the rest of the season because of the injury. Anthony Dixon could start since Fred Jackson also injured and could be a solid starting option on FantasyScore.

Bills | C.J. Spiller undergoing X-rays

Sun, 19 Oct 2014 11:29:59 -0700

Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (shoulder) is undergoing an X-ray to hopefully rule out a possible broken clavicle.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller likely would miss several weeks if he has a broken clavicle, so owners will need to wait to see the results of the X-rays. Anthony Dixon could become the starting running back if Spiller and Fred Jackson miss time and could be a solid starting option on FantasyScore, depending on the price.

Bills | C.J. Spiller carted off

Sun, 19 Oct 2014 11:21:26 -0700

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (shoulder) was carted off the field after suffering an apparent shoulder injury in the team's Week 7 game.

Fantasy Tip: With Spiller and Fred Jackson out of the lineup, Anthony Dixon is the only healthy running back the team has for the game. Dixon could become the starting running back if Spiller and Jackson miss multiple weeks and could be a cheap starting option on FantasyScore.

Sat, 18 Oct 2014 16:43:19 -0700

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller will continue to see touches in the offense, according to offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller ($6,000; 12% of your cap) has struggled all season and played a season-low 12 snaps last week. He's a risky play on FantasyScore at this point.

Bills | C.J. Spiller pressing

Fri, 17 Oct 2014 06:23:14 -0700

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller is pressing, which presents part of his problems right now, according to head coach Doug Marrone. Spiller is looking to hit the proverbial home run with every play.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller ($6,000; 12% of your cap) presents too big of a risk to play on FantasyScore this week after playing just 12 snaps in Week 6. Keep him on the back burner for now.

Bills | C.J. Spiller saying the right things

Thu, 16 Oct 2014 06:25:24 -0700

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller said he's not worried at all about playing just 12 snaps in Week 6. "I always said you take advantage when you're in there, do everything you possibly can to make plays for your team," Spiller said. "So I'm not caught up in how many snaps I get. Obviously you want to play more, but certain things happen throughout the game, and you have to go to different packages. I'm not concerned."

Fantasy Tip: The NFL trade deadline is less than two weeks away, and fantasy owners are hoping Spiller is dealt to a team that will actually use him correctly. Spiller ($6,000; 12% of your cap) is still far too expensive to consider playing on FantasyScore unless things change.

Bills | C.J. Spiller rides the pine

Mon, 13 Oct 2014 07:06:44 -0700

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller played just 12 offensive snaps Sunday, Oct. 12, and had six rushes for 19 yards.

Fantasy Tip: It looks like the team has committed to Fred Jackson at running back, and Spiller could be on his way out of town. Spiller has loads up talent and could be a force in PPR leagues such as FantasyScore's game. However, his chances are sparse right now.

Bills | C.J. Spiller struggles early

Tue, 07 Oct 2014 17:38:00 -0700

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller managed just four yards on six first-down carries in Week 5. For the year, he has nine negative runs and is averaging a career-low 3.5 yards per carry.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller will take up 12.4% ($6,400) of the cap in Week 6 at FantasyScore, but his inefficient play makes him a potential bust. Meanwhile, Fred Jackson has been the better back for Buffalo all season, and he is actually priced $100 cheaper than Spiller in Week 6.

Bills | Fred Jackson outshining C.J. Spiller

Mon, 06 Oct 2014 14:06:54 -0700

Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson has completely outperformed RB C.J. Spiller so far this season. A large part of that is because Jackson has seen more opportunities, especially in the receiving game. Jackson's 33 targets are second in the NFL among running backs, and 19 more than Spiller.

Fantasy Tip: Jackson's age, 35, doesn't seem to be affecting him much. While Spiller does have more carries than Jackson on the season, Jackson is the much preferred option, especially in PPR leagues.

Fri, 26 Sep 2014 10:59:58 -0700

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (chest) fully participated in practice Friday, Sept. 26, and is probable for Week 4.

Bills | C.J. Spiller receives most carries

Tue, 09 Sep 2014 17:32:36 -0700

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller received a team-high 15 carries in Week 1. He finished with 15 carries for 53 yards and had three catches for 11 yards.

Fantasy Tip: The fact Spiller received the most carries is an encouraging sign, and if he continues to receive around 20 touches per game, he should have a strong season. He will take up 12.8% of your cap ($6,400) on FantasyScore in Week 2, placing him 16th among running backs. Facing a Miami defense that is dealing with multiple injuries at the linebacker position, Spiller could make a solid play.

Bills | C.J. Spiller to return kicks

Thu, 04 Sep 2014 07:11:10 -0700

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller is the team's primary kickoff returner.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller has some enhanced value in leagues that reward for special teams play. However, there is increased risk of injury and the potential for him to need a breather after returning a kickoff. Spiller is a $7,100 running back on FantasyScore this weekend against the Chicago Bears, and there are probably better values.

Bills | Cordy Glenn cleared

Mon, 18 Aug 2014 15:12:54 -0700

Buffalo Bills OT Cordy Glenn (illness) has been cleared to participate in team drills, according to head coach Doug Marrone. The team will see how he performs during practice before deciding if he will play in the third preseason game.

Fantasy Tip: Glenn has miss most of training camp because of an undisclosed illness but has time to prepare for the start of the season. His presence on the offensive line should help the values of EJ Manuel, C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson, because he is a Pro Bowl player.

Bills | C.J. Spiller not being contacted by other teams

Wed, 13 Aug 2014 15:10:28 -0700

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller has not been talked about with other teams, according to general manager Doug Whaley. "Again, no one, I'll tell you guys and you know I'm a straight shooter. We have not been contacted by any teams. I can probably see where people see our depth at running back and try to connect the dots with teams that don't have depth, but, again, nobody has contacted us," Whalen said.

Fantasy Tip: There was much excitement over Spiller leading up to last season, but he wound up being a huge disappointment after an ankle injury in Week 4 that he never really recovered from. Now, he's fully healthy again, but with Fred Jackson likely to cut into his touches, he's no longer a top-tier consideration at running back.

Bills | Doug Marrone talks running backs

Thu, 07 Aug 2014 13:29:27 -0700

Buffalo Bills RBs C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson will likely see the bulk of the action in Buffalo's backfield this year, barring any roster changes. Head coach Doug Marrone recently frowned upon the idea of utilizing three running backs.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller has recently been involved in trade rumors, though those rumors lack substance. Bryce Brown and Anthony Dixon seem to be headed for not much more than backup roles.

Bills | C.J. Spiller focused despite rumors

Fri, 01 Aug 2014 15:31:59 -0700

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller is staying focused on football despite being the subject of trade rumors. Spiller said he is excited to be with the Bills and hopes a deal can get worked out.

Fantasy Tip: Buffalo has one of the more crowded backfields in the league with Spiller, Fred Jackson, Bryce Brown and Anthony Dixon. For now, Spiller should still be considered an RB2, though that could obviously change if he is traded.

Bills | More touches for C.J. Spiller

Tue, 15 Jul 2014 19:02:37 -0700

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller will likely touch the ball 20 times per game if the offense is operating efficiently, according to BuffaloBills.com.

Fantasy Tip: With his speed and big-play ability, Spiller could do some serious damage with 20 touches. However, he has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, and increasing his usage probably won't help in that regard. Spiller has RB1 upside, but draft him as an RB2 because of the injury concerns.

Bills | C.J. Spiller more comfortable with running game

Mon, 14 Jul 2014 11:17:46 -0700

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller recently said there's a noticeable difference in the team's running game with a year of experience under the new offensive system. At the same time, Spiller admitted there's still work to be done before the season starts.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller will be splitting time with Fred Jackson as usual this season, but he's expected to be used more after recovering from a nagging ankle injury that hindered him for the better part of the 2013 season. Spiller should be considered an RB2 with added value in PPR leagues.

Bills | C.J. Spiller's ankle feels great

Fri, 30 May 2014 12:26:18 -0700

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (ankle) said he feels great while taking part in organized team activities this week. Spiller wasn't the same after battling through an ankle injury for most of last season. "I don't feel nothing, I feel great," said Spiller. "This is the best I've felt since 2012 when I had that great year. The ankle feels wonderful. I just have to keep doing what I need to do to stay healthy this whole season and try to go out there and make plays."

Fantasy Tip: If Spiller returns back to full health and avoids injuries in 2014, he should be expected to be one of the more productive backs in the league, even with Fred Jackson sharing carries.

Sat, 10 May 2014 09:47:16 -0700

The Buffalo Bills have acquired RB Bryce Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles for an undisclosed draft choice.

Fantasy Tip: Brown will be behind C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson on the depth chart but could receive some playing time this upcoming season. Brown probably should not be drafted in most leagues but could be a waiver wire pickup during the season.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller appears to be on track to be healthy for next season. Owners should consider Spiller as a starting fantasy running back in 2014 even though he splits carries with Fred Jackson.

"I don't have any concerns or any doubts what my role will be," Spiller said. "I think we just had an obstacle in the road when I got injured in Week 4. It kind of hindered some of the things that we were able to do with me. When you keep coming in and out of games, it's hard to really get a guy going like that."

Bills | C.J. Spiller unlikely to be used at wideout

Fri, 15 Nov 2013 10:43:42 -0800

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller is unlikely to be used as a wide receiver in Week 11 against the New York Jets with both WRs Stevie Johnson (groin) and Robert Woods (ankle) out. "Well I think in the backfield it's much easier to hand him the football than it is to throw him the football, especially vertically down the field. Intermediate throws I have no problem, (or) screens, intermediate routes, but it's really difficult to push that ball downfield to running backs at any position," head coach Doug Marrone said. Spiller had 11 touches (eight carries, three catches) in Week 10. Marrone plans to use multiple tight end sets with the receiving game hurting.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller may be targeted a little more than usual on passes coming out of the backfield as a result. However, the Jets run-stopping unit has been solid all year, so Spiller is a rather weak play. Consider him an RB3 or flex.

Mon, 11 Nov 2013 12:37:32 -0800

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (ankle) was on the field for only 22 of the team's 67 offensive snaps during the team's Week 10 game, but head coach Doug Marrone said Spiller was not limited because of his ankle injury. Marrone said the team planned to use RB Fred Jackson more during the game and that Spiller's playing time will vary from week to week.

Fantasy Tip: The team likely will continue to use Spiller and Jackson each game, but their production will change each week depending on what the team wants to do on offense. Both should be in the starting lineup most weeks.

Bills | C.J. Spiller expected to play

Thu, 31 Oct 2013 11:41:10 -0700

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (ankle) was limited in practice Thursday, Oct. 31, but is expected to play in Week 9 against the Kansas City Chiefs after sitting out due to a "nagging" high ankle sprain in Week 8. "I feel good about C.J. playing," head coach Doug Marrone said. "In talking with him, without any setbacks, we feel like he'll be ready to go."

Fantasy Tip: Despite the encouraging news on Spiller, he remains a pretty risky start this weekend against a tough Chiefs defense. Fred Jackson (knee) should continue to see the majority of the carries, too. Consider Spiller more of an RB3 or flex option.
