Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry said he has been working on his improving his technique this offseason so he can be better in coverage. "Anything that helps my coverage and stuff like that (is good)," Berry said. "I feel like that's a big part (of what) they put on me, to cover guys. I've got to make sure I'm on point with that stuff."

Chiefs | Trying to clear cap space

The Kansas City Chiefs would like to clear some extra cap space in order to further improve their roster, but there aren't many veterans who would be logical cap casualties. ESPN.com's Adam Teicher writes that the biggest savings would come from LB Tamba Hali, CB Brandon Flowers, and SS Eric Berry, but notes that those players are too productive to let go. WR Dwayne Bowe and CB Sean Smith would make more sense on the field, but financially are not options for release.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles heads six Chiefs players who are among the leading vote getters at their positions for the 2014 Pro Bowl game. Charles ranks third among all NFL players with 825,345 votes, trailing only Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning (1,227,068) and New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (1,049,811). The other Chiefs who lead their positions are OLB Tamba Hali (293,303); OT Branden Albert (209,068), and P Dustin Colquitt (156,655). OG Jeff Allen (171,074) and SS Eric Berry (149,759) rank second at their positions.

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry will line up at strong safety in the base defense and at linebacker in the dime defense. Berry could also be asked to be a cover safety or a blitzing safety in the nickel defense. "I really had to get into my playbook because there are certain things I didn't know how to do in the past," Berry said. "I have to know what to do as a linebacker … sometimes I'm rushing off the edge. Sometimes I have to stay on top of my game before … like with the safety position."

Kansas City Chiefs CB Brandon Flowers said he believes the team can have one of the top defensive backfields in the NFL this season after the additions of CBs Sean Smith and Dunta Robinson. "We going out there trying to have the best secondary," Flowers said. "Sean Smith is a big corner that can bump and run ... we brought in Dunta Robinson, someone who can come in and cover, (and) also, [SS Eric Berry] is always roaming on the back end. If we put it all together, man, I think we have the pieces to be the best secondary in the NFL."

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel said RB Jamaal Charles, TE Tony Moeaki and SS Eric Berry are healthy enough to play but is not sure if any will be able to return to the level of play they were at before they tore their anterior cruciate ligaments. "Those guys are playing and they're practicing, and so they are good enough to play," Crennel said. "Now, whether they'll ever be back to what they used to be, I don't know if that's going to be the case, because they've had a reconstruction on the knee. Will it be like it was before the reconstruction? I don't know that will be the case."

The presence of Kansas City Chiefs FS Abram Elam has allowed the team to expand the role of SS Eric Berry. For instance, in the preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals, Elam's presence allowed Berry to slide into a linebacker position. When Berry lines up at LB, he is allowed to blitz, play the run or drop into coverage. Elam can also play both safety positions.

Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey said Monday, Sept. 12, that WR Stevie Johnson's cut block which led the Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry (knee) suffering a season-ending injury was a clean play. "It was a clean block," Gailey said. "We tell our guys, 'You go block those guys.' Because let me tell you, if you're up in the air they're not going to hesitate to get you and take a shot at you because they're trying to separate you from the ball. That's an opportunity for our receivers to go down the field and hit those guys. It's legal. It happened in front of me on the sideline in front of an official."
