The Seattle Mariners reassigned SPs Danny Hultzen and James Paxton and P Jhonny Nunez to minor league camp Thursday, March 14. Hultzen was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma.

Fantasy Tip: Hultzen and Paxton are two of the club's finer young arms, but Hultzen's ceiling is much higher. Of the two, Hultzen has a better chance of making an impact in the Mariners' rotation this season.

The Seattle Mariners won't rush SPs Danny Hultzen and Taijuan Walker to the starting rotation this year. SPs Erasmo Ramirez, Blake Beavan and Jon Garland probably have a leg up on a rotation spot this spring because of their experience. The team also won't rush Ps James Paxton or Brandon Maurer to the majors.

Behind Seattle Mariners SPs Felix Hernandez, Hisashi Iwakuma and Joe Saunders, SPs Blake Beavan and Erasmo Ramirez are the front-runners to fill out the rotation, but they'll have to withstand pushes from Ps Taijuan Walker, Danny Hultzen, James Paxton and Brandon Maurer. Also, SPs Jon Garland and Jeremy Bonderman are making good impressions early in spring. "They've both been very impressive," manager Eric Wedge said of Garland and Bonderman. "It's early in camp, and we have to see how they stand the test of wear and tear and going out there and pitching on a regular basis. But they're both going to get good opportunities to make this ballclub." Bonderman is weighing 220 pounds this spring, which is around 25 pounds less than he weighed when he played for the Detroit Tigers.

The Washington Nationals could now look for a more substantial return from a team by trading OF Mike Morse and packaging him with either RPs Tyler Clippard or Drew Storen. For example, the Seattle Mariners may consider sending Ps Danny Hultzen, James Paxton and Taijuan Walker for Morse and Clippard or Storen.

P Jonathan Arias, P Logan Bawcom, P Jeremy Bonderman, SP Andrew Carraway, P Danny Farquhar, C John Hicks, 1B Mike Jacobs, SS Brad Miller, SP D.J. Mitchell, P Brian Moran, INF Stefen Romero and RP Carson Smith are the other players invited to camp.

Updating a previous report, the Arizona Diamondbacks would have received three or four players from the Seattle Mariners for OF Justin Upton. RP Charlie Furbush, RP Stephen Pryor and SS Nick Franklin were believed to be part of the trade. The Mariners likely would have also given up either SP Taijuan Walker, SP Danny Hultzen or P James Paxton.

RP Charlie Furbush, RP Stephen Pryor and SS Nick Franklin were believed to be part of the trade. Seattle Mariners 1B Kendrys Morales will be penciled into the middle of the lineup for the team next season. "We have been focused on adding offense this offseason, and feel that Kendrys will be a middle-of-the-order bat for us," general manager Jack Zduriencik said. "He's a switch-hitter with power who has played - and hit - in the AL West. He's familiar with the teams and parks and is a proven run-producer." Morales will likely compete with 1B Justin Smoak at first base or serve as the team's designated hitter. Cs Jesus Montero and John Jaso could split time at DH, too. SPs Blake Beavan, Erasmo Ramirez, Danny Hultzen, James Paxton, Taijuan Walker and Brendan Maurer will be given a shot in spring training to crack a starting rotation that now includes only SPs Felix Hernandez and Hisashi Iwakuma.

The Kansas City Royals are tracking the progress of Seattle Mariners SP prospect James Paxton in the Arizona Fall League. No trade talks are imminent between the teams, but the Royals are looking for starting pitching this offseason.

Some think Arizona Diamondbacks OF Justin Upton will be dealt within the next 13 days or after the season, and the Seattle Mariners have shown interest. However, they aren't willing to give up 2B Dustin Ackley or 3B Kyle Seager or their trio of pitching prospects, SPs Danny Hultzen, Taijuan Walker or James Paxton.
