Sun, 07 Aug 2016 20:38:29 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton (elbow) left his start Sunday, Aug. 7, against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim after being hit on the elbow by a line drive. He went for X-rays, and manager Scott Servais said the tests haven't been read yet, but "fingers crossed that it's just a bruise."

Mariners | James Paxton pitches seven strong

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 19:10:03 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton allowed one run on three hits while walking one and striking out nine in a win over the Toronto Blue Jays Friday, July 22.

Fantasy Tip: Paxton's performances and strikeout totals have been up and down all year. He is a decent option in AL-only formats and a high-risk, high-reward play in DFS games.

Mariners | James Paxton hit hard by Houston

Fri, 15 Jul 2016 22:52:36 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton allowed six runs on nine hits in five innings of work against the Houston Astros on Friday, July 15. He walked one and struck out one.

Fantasy Tip: Paxton was doing well through four but was lit up in the fifth, continuing a rash of disappointing starts recently. Of particular concern is the sudden lack of strikeouts: after fanning 41 in 34 2/3 innings in June, Paxton has just five K's in 18 2/3 July frames. There's still some upside here, but Paxton is currently AL-only fodder.

Mariners | James Paxton fizzles in Motown

Tue, 21 Jun 2016 19:29:29 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton allowed four earned runs, 11 hits and three walks with five strikeouts in a loss Tuesday, June 21, against the Detroit Tigers. Paxton was cruising along until the sixth inning, and then he fell apart in the eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Paxton was pitching pretty well, even until the eighth-inning rally, hitting 98 mph on the radar gun. He just ran out of gas as the Tigers pieced together a few hits and loaded the bases with none out. He has pitched well since returning, and has emerged as a must-start in all AL-only leagues and deeper mixed formats.

Mariners | James Paxton defeats Tampa Bay

Thu, 16 Jun 2016 19:22:56 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton (1-2) allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings in a victory over the Tampa Bay Rays Thursday, June 16, with two walks and five strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: With the win, Paxton snapped a streak of seven consecutive winless starts dating back to May 2015, although he has been the victim of poor run support in several of those outings. He has six walks and 29 strikeouts through 22 innings this season, making him a viable pitching option in all fantasy formats. His next start will come against the Detroit Tigers Tuesday, June 21.

Mariners | Bullpen lets James Paxton down

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 22:30:56 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton scattered six hits and two walks over 6 1/3 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts Saturday, June 11, against the Texas Rangers. RP Steve Cishek blew the save in the ninth inning, costing Paxton a much-deserved win.

Fantasy Tip: Despite the no-decision, Paxton was very sharp and has re-emerged as a must-start fantasy option. He is 0-2 on the season, but he has a stellar 2.25 ERA which helps owners across all fantasy formats and DFS play.

Mariners | Wade Miley, James Paxton to be separated?

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 20:45:09 -0700

Seattle Mariners SPs Wade Miley and James Paxton are likely going to be separated after their scheduled starts Saturday, June 11, and Sunday, June 12. Manager Scott Servais has an open date Monday, June 13, and it's likely Paxton and SP Hisashi Iwakuma are swapped, keeping Paxton on regular rest to pitch Thursday, June 16, against the Tampa Bay Rays, with Iwakuma seeing two extra days rest before starting Friday, June 17, against the Boston Red Sox.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma might be the big winner, although his fantasy owners might disagree. An extra two days of rest might be just what the doctor ordered to get him back on track.

Mariners | James Paxton to start again

Thu, 02 Jun 2016 15:09:11 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton will make another start at home Monday, June 6, according to manager Scott Servais.

Fantasy Tip: Paxton's season debut filling in for King Felix was a disaster Wednesday, as the southpaw allowed 10 hits (two home runs) and eight runs (three earned) in just 3 2/3 frames against the weak-hitting Padres. The M's face the Rangers Monday, making Paxton an obvious candidate to avoid. Because of his low strikeout totals, he's only a matchup play in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues in the short term.

Mariners | James Paxton hit hard in 2016 debut

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 23:54:59 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton yielded 10 hits and eight runs in 3 2/3 innings against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday, June 1. Only three of the runs were earned, but Paxton clearly wasn't sharp in his first major-league appearance of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Paxton, who was recalled earlier in the day to take Felix Hernandez's spot in the rotation, had fared reasonably well in previous big-league stints: 12-8, 3.16 ERA, 1.25 WHIP in 165 innings. He could never get going on Wednesday night, however, and needed 103 pitches to cover 3 2/3 innings. The lone bright spot: seven of the 11 outs he recorded came via strikeout. Still, based on this, Paxton is best left on waivers regardless of league size.
