Mariners | Nathan Karns wins final spot

Mon, 28 Mar 2016 09:36:19 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton was optioned to Class AAA Tacoma Monday, March 28, meaning SP Nathan Karns has won the No. 5 starting spot.

Fantasy Tip: Karns had an impressive rookie season with Tampa Bay in 2015 and was more attractive in fantasy drafts than Paxton. Now it's official. Karns showed improved command in the second half despite an ERA spike, meaning his floor is high as a late-round pick in mixed leagues. Bid with more confidence now.

Mariners | James Paxton doesn't help chances

Sun, 27 Mar 2016 20:21:30 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton allowed seven runs and nine hits, including three home runs, in just four innings of his spring start against the Chicago Cubs Sunday, March 27.

Fantasy Tip: Paxton is competing for the final rotation spot with Nathan Karns, who hasn't looked good, either. Karns is probably the more attractive pitcher as a dart throw late in deep mixed leagues.

Mariners | James Paxton alters arsenal

Tue, 01 Mar 2016 13:55:59 -0800

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton is working on a new high fastball and a refined changeup this spring. He also worked on both pitches last fall in the Arizona Fall League. He will throw two innings against the San Diego Padres Wednesday, March 2, as he attempts to win a rotation spot. Injuries have limited Paxton to just 13 starts in each of the last two years. He's mainly competing with SP Nathan Karns in spring training.

Fantasy Tip: Paxton has an intriguing ground-ball profile and he's still young, but his control remains an issue, and most fantasy owners won't want to take this injury risk. There is limited upside, but he's worth a late-round stab in deep mixed leagues if he wins a rotation spot.

Mariners | No restrictions for James Paxton

Tue, 23 Feb 2016 19:15:29 -0800

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton (finger) threw just 67 innings in 2015 due to a left middle finger injury, but manager Scott Servais said Tuesday, Feb. 23, that there will no innings limit for Paxton. He said the team has to be realistic and not count on a 30-start season, but that it's not impossible.

Fantasy Tip: Paxton is a decent left-handed starting pitcher who can help fantasy owners in AL-only leagues as a back-end rotation guy. He can also help in deeper mixed formats if he is healthy.

Mariners | No innings limit for Taijuan Walker

Tue, 23 Feb 2016 17:01:21 -0800

Seattle Mariners SPs Taijuan Walker and James Paxton will not have their innings limited in 2016, according to manager Scott Servais. However, both pitchers will be watched carefully. Walker had 169 2/3 innings last year at 22 years old, and Paxton threw only 67 frames because of a finger ailment.

Fantasy Tip: Walker got off to a horrendous start last year, and his overall numbers were never able to fully recover. But he finished strong and has all the tools to improve drastically as a breakout candidate in 2016. Paxton is a forgotten man because of his injury and may not even make the rotation. He's purely AL-only fodder for now.

Mariners | James Paxton in better shape

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 10:52:51 -0800

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton (finger) has lost 20 pounds this offseason and is showing no lingering effects from his finger injury, according to trainer Rick Griffin.

Fantasy Tip: Paxton has been pegged as a breakout candidate by some, and he'll be in the SP3 range in traditional leagues.

Mariners | James Paxton throws sim game

Mon, 23 Nov 2015 18:52:58 -0800

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton (finger) throw a seven-inning simulated game Monday, Nov. 23, general manager Jerry Dipoto said. He is expected to repeat that one more time to building his innings count.

Fantasy Tip: Paxton is making his way back from a finger issue which shut him down in the final month. He should be fine well in time for spring training.

Mariners | M's have discussed Brett Gardner

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 06:09:28 -0800

New York Yankees OF Brett Gardner has been discussed in trade talks with the Seattle Mariners. Mariners SP James Paxton's name has come up, but talks aren't considered to have been very far along.

Fantasy Tip: Gardner is a midrate fantasy outfielder whose base-stealing prowess has failed to live up to his career-high 49 in 2011.

Mariners | James Paxton shut down

Tue, 29 Sep 2015 15:35:59 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton (finger) has been shut down for the rest of the season. He will now begin preparing to pitch in the Arizona Fall League.

Fantasy Tip: Paxton won't be guaranteed a starting spot in the M's rotation next year, so he's unlikely to be drafted in shallow mixed leagues in 2016.

Mariners | James Paxton may be done for year

Tue, 29 Sep 2015 00:53:34 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton (fingernail) may be finished for the 2015 season, as manager Lloyd McClendon termed it "50-50" whether Paxton would pitch again.

Fantasy Tip: Paxton ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) should be dropped in your leagues. The temptation is there to keep Paxton, but the reality is he might need a change of scenery and there may not be room for him in the rotation.
