Lions | Three running backs will have a role

Tue, 26 Mar 2013 11:07:22 -0700

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said all three of the teams running backs, Reggie Bush, Mikel Leshoure, and Joique Bell, will have a role in 2013. "Joique runs the ball a little bit different than Mikel, but they both run a little bit different and present different things than Reggie, and I think that combination of guys is good. People like to say running back by committee and things like that, but each guy will have a role. There will be plenty of touches on the offense for everybody."

Lions | Joique Bell has chemistry with new coach

Wed, 16 Jan 2013 12:50:09 -0800

Detroit Lions RB Joique Bell has familiarity with new running backs coach Curtis Modkins, when Modkins was the offensive coordinator and running backs coach with the Buffalo Bills at the start of Bell's career. "That was my first year, so he taught me a lot," Bell said. "I remember calling him after the draft, after I got picked up, and I was really eager to get started. He was able to kind of calm me down and say don't worry about it. That's the kind of guy he is. He wants you to feel comfortable. You play a lot better when you're comfortable. You're kind of at home with what you're doing. He just made me feel comfortable my first year." Bell expects Modkins to use him in a similar capacity as he was in 2012.

Lions | RB split pretty even

Tue, 11 Dec 2012 16:06:16 -0800

Detroit Lions RBs Mikel Leshoure and Joique Bell split the running load pretty evenly in their Week 14 game against the Green Bay Packers. Leshoure had 14 carries and Bell carried the ball 12 times. However, Bell played more snaps (43) than Leshoure (31). Both runners were equally effective; Leshoure had effective runs on seven of his 14 tries, and Bell was efficient on six of his 12 carries, with an efficient run being a carry for four or more yards on first down, half the remaining distance on second down or picking up a first down on third or fourth down. Bell had 19 yards after contact and Leshoure gained 14. Leshoure showed he continues to be indecisive in the backfield, which hurts his momentum as he hits holes. Bell is running with more authority and is more of the total package, but his lack of top-end speed and strength makes him more of a complementary back.

Lions | Joique Bell will see more touches

Fri, 07 Dec 2012 09:35:13 -0800

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said RB Joique Bell will continue to see more touches to infuse some life into the running game. Bell has all three of the team's runs for over 20 yards this season, and he's averaging 5.7 yards per carry. RB Mikel Leshoure had 84 yards and a touchdown the first time the team played the Green Bay Packers, and they used a lot of two-deep safeties, which gave Leshoure a distinct advantage. Leshoure is averaging 3.8 yards per tote, but leads the team with seven touchdowns. "Him rattling off really the three explosive runs that we've had this year certainly gives him more opportunities I think in our offense, not just in the games," Linehan said of Bell. "I think you'll see him playing a little bit more throughout the game."
