Jerry has exhibited erratic play, practice habits and questionable conditioning over the past two seasons. "John has come a long way. He's got a long way to go, I'll tell you that," Ireland said. "I like John. We coach him here at the Senior Bowl. He was able to fill in at different places, from tackle to guard. He's got some role flexibility. He needs to get better. But he's got a chance."

"One of the big things we didn't have was Lydon Murtha this year," Ireland said. "He ended the 2010 season really strong, and I was looking forward to really seeing what he was going to become." Murtha missed the season after breaking his foot in the preseason.

He filled in during the Week 15 game in place of the injured OT Jake Long (back). It was his first career start at left tackle. "The biggest thing about John is he's physical, and he likes to compete," interim coach Todd Bowles said Tuesday, Dec. 20. Jerry also played 40 sacks in Week 14 against the Philadelphia Eagles, and was the only offensive lineman to grade out positively.
