San Francisco 49ers RB Anthony Dixon likely will make the roster this season if he shows that he is one of the team's best special teams players.

Even though San Francisco 49ers RB LaMichael James hasn't been active for any games this year, he may have the best shot to become the backup to RB Frank Gore. James and QB Colin Kaepernick ran a zone-read offense effectively together in the preseason, and James ran a similar offense in college at Oregon. However, James has spent almost all of his practice time on the scout team this year, and he hasn't had much experience in special teams, which could hurt his chances. RB Anthony Dixon has been active every game this year because he is vital to the special teams. RB Brandon Jacobs doesn't make any special teams contributions either, so if James is active over Dixon, the team will have two backup running backs who don't contribute on special teams.

San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore will continue to see the majority of touches with RB Kendall Hunter (Achilles') done for the year, and RBs Anthony Dixon, Brandon Jacobs, LaMichael James and Jewel Hampton are also available to pitch in. James may be the most intriguing because he provides the best change of pace to Gore. "He's a guy similar to (Saints running back Darren) Sproles. He can still carry the ball up inside. I know he's anxious to get out there and play," S Donte Whitner said.

San Francisco 49ers RB Anthony Dixon (hamstring), SS Dashon Goldson (ribs), LB Tavares Gooden (elbow, quadriceps), C Jonathan Goodwin (ankle) and DT Will Tukuafu (wrist) practiced fully Saturday, Nov. 17, and are each listed as probable for the Week 11 game against the Chicago Bears Monday, Nov. 19.

San Francisco 49ers RB Anthony Dixon stands a good chance of making the final roster, according to offensive coordinator Greg Roman. "I think we can look to (Dixon) to have his most productive season as a Niner," Roman said. Dixon seemed hopelessly buried on the depth chart at running back when training camp began, but he has taken advantage of recent injuries at the position and has strung together two solid preseason games.

San Francisco 49ers RB Anthony Dixon has asked head coach Jim Harbaugh to a chance to play at fullback and Harbaugh said Dixon is responding to the move.

The San Francisco 49ers are not expected to try RB Anthony Dixon out at fullback because he does not fit the profile of a fullback since he tries to avoid contact. Dixon will have to perform well during training camp in order to make the final roster.

San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore feels he has plenty left in the tank despite the team's plans to ease his workload in coming years. RBs Brandon Jacobs, Kendall Hunter, Anthony Dixon, Rock Cartwright and LaMichael James are all on roster and will threaten Gore's playing time. "I feel like I still got a lot left in my tank," Gore said. "I want to show it off that I still got a lot left in my tank and I can play at a high level. I will play at a high level as long as God blesses me to be healthy so I can go out and do something that I love."
