Texas Rangers OF Leonys Martin has a decent shot to make the team out of spring training as he competes with OF Craig Gentry for the center field spot. Martin probably has the best chance out of SS Jurickson Profar, 3B Mike Olt, OF Engel Beltre and C Jorge Alfaro at making the opening day roster. Martin has been compared to Boston Red Sox OF Jacoby Ellsbury, who hitting coach Dave Magadan also worked with in Boston. "The ceiling is limitless on him. So we'll let him go at his pace and whatever we can to make him better, and he's definitely a lot like Jacoby in the way he's very coachable, very open. He's got that personality where he's very approachable, those are all good things," Magadan said.

Seattle Mariners C Jesus Montero leads the list of 10 prospect catchers to watch in 2012, according to MLB.com. Also on the list in order are Devin Mesoraco (Reds), Travis d'Arnaud (Blue Jays), Gary Sanchez (Yankees), Wilin Rosario (Rockies), Yasmani Grandal (Padres), Christian Bethancourt (Braves), Ryan Lavarnway (Red Sox), Sebastian Valle (Phillies) and Jorge Alfaro (Rangers).

Jesse Sanchez, of MLB.com, reports the Texas Rangers signed Columbian C Jorge Alfaro to a $1.3 million deal Monday, Jan. 18. He is currently hitting .250 with two RBIs in six games in the Dominican Prospect League. The Philadelphia Phillies, Seattle Mariners, Cleveland Indians, San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees were all expressing interest in Alfaro.
