Mariners | Steve Clevenger undergoes surgery

Sat, 02 Jul 2016 22:08:24 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Steve Clevenger (hand) had a plate and six screws inserted into his broken right hand, manager Scott Servais said Saturday, July 2. The typical recovery time is six to eight weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Clevenger is only worth using in the deepest of AL-only fantasy formats as a No. 2 receiver when healthy.

Mariners | Steve Clevenger breaks hand

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 23:40:55 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Steve Clevenger (hand) suffered a broken bone in his throwing hand after being struck by a foul tip on Wednesday, June 29. He's out indefinitely.

Fantasy Tip: With a .221-1-7 line for the season, Clevenger was a non-factor for fantasy purposes. It could mean more time for veteran Chris Iannetta, but his .224-7-20 doesn't inspire much confidence, either.

Mariners | Chris Iannetta sitting Wednesday

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 15:04:12 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Chris Iannetta is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, June 29. C Steve Clevenger is doing the catching and is batting eighth against Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jameson Taillon.

Fantasy Tip: Clevenger should be avoided in all fantasy formats Wednesday. He's hitting just .221 (15-for-68) and has only one home run and seven RBI on the campaign.

Mariners | No Chris Iannetta vs. Tigers

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 13:38:32 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Chris Iannetta is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, June 22. C Steve Clevenger is starting behind the plate and batting eighth against Detroit Tigers SP Michael Fulmer Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Iannetta is a low-end option in cavernous mixed, two-catcher and AL-only setups, but he does receive the bulk of starts for Seattle, so his volume buoys his value. Clevenger barely moves the fantasy needle and is nothing more than a desperation option in all fantasy formats.

Mariners | Franklin Gutierrez not starting

Sat, 18 Jun 2016 12:31:44 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Franklin Gutierrez is not in the lineup against the Boston Red Sox SP Rick Porcello on Saturday, June 18, after going 3-for-5 with two homers and six RBI on Friday, June 17. OF Seth Smith is drawing the start in right field instead and will bat second. 1B Adam Lind will man first base and hit sixth while C Steve Clevenger will serve as the backstop and bat seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Gutierrez has made three consecutive starts prior to today, but that is only because Seattle has faced left-handers each time. He has been sitting against right-handers, against whom he is hitting only .147 in limited at-bats. Gutierrez is a worthwhile gamble in deeper leagues anytime he faces a southpaw, however, as he is hitting .299 with five homers and 17 RBI against them this season. Most owners can ignore Smith, Lind and Clevenger until further notice.

Mariners | Adam Lind taking a seat Sunday

Sun, 12 Jun 2016 12:18:54 -0700

Seattle Mariners 1B Adam Lind, OF Seth Smith, C Steve Clevenger and OF Nori Aoki are out of the lineup against Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels on Sunday, June 12, after drawing starts on Saturday, June 11. OF Franklin Gutierrez is in right field and hitting second, 1B Dae-Ho Lee is at first and batting fifth, C Chris Iannetta is behind the plate and hitting seventh, while SS Shawn O'Malley is in left field and batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Gutierrez is 4-for-12 with a homer in his career against Hamels and is the only one of the bunch that merits any consideration in fantasy today, although owners can probably find better alternatives with a full state of games today. Lee, who is batting .308 with 10 homers and 24 RBI, is worth adding going forward as there is speculation he will start seeing more playing time ahead of Lind against right-handers.

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 16:48:32 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Chris Iannetta is not in the starting lineup against Cleveland Indians SP Cody Anderson Tuesday, June 7. C Steve Clevenger will start at catcher and is batting eighth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Clevenger has recorded four hits in his last three games but is hitting only .216 on the season. Owners in most leagues should be able to find better options for their lineups.
