Steelers | No depth chart for RBs

Wed, 12 Jun 2013 12:08:55 -0700

Pittsburgh Steelers running backs coach Kirby Wilson said the team does not really have a running back depth chart at this point. "There really is no pecking order other than that's how we ended the season. Guys are jumping in accordingly and rotating themselves. There really is no rhyme or reason to it," Wilson said. RB Jonathan Dwyer will enter training camp as No. 1 on the depth chart because he finished last season there.

Fantasy Tip: Le'Veon Bell is expected to be the frontrunner for the starting job at this point, but Dwyer and Isaac Redman will also be competing for the job. Bell could be a low-end No. 2 running back as well as a flex option depending on the matchup if he is the starter. Redman and Dwyer probably would be week flex options if one of them wins the starting job.

Steelers | Two RBs appear to be safe

Wed, 12 Jun 2013 12:03:32 -0700

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell and Isaac Redman appear to be the only two running backs that are guaranteed a roster spot this season. RBs Jonathan Dwyer, Baron Batch and LaRod Stephens-Howling could compete for two roster spots during camp.

Steelers | New blocking scheme in the works

Fri, 24 May 2013 10:00:44 -0700

Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line coach Jack Bicknell Jr. is installing an outside zone, one-cut blocking scheme in organized team activities in favor of their old power and inside blocking scheme. The Steelers are changing their approach to take advantage of their big and nimble offensive line personnel. Pittsburgh got poor production from their running backs last year, and RB Jonathan Dwyer led the team in rushing with only 623 yards, the lowest total by a rusher in team history since Merrill Hoge ran for 810 in 1991. Bicknell had success with the blocking scheme with the Kansas City Chiefs last year. "We are going to be dedicated to the zone," RB Isaac Redman said. "We are still going to be a power team, but we are going to have this zone scheme in so we can keep the defense on its heels and keep them running."

Fantasy Tip: This new scheme should make Dwyer more productive, but many wonder if he has what it takes to be an every-down back in the NFL. Le'Veon Bell and Redman will spell him plenty, probably. Dwyer, as a result, is likely nothing more than a midrange No. 3 running back. Bell is worth a mid- to late-round pick, too.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell's understanding of offense will decide role

Sun, 19 May 2013 11:51:59 -0700

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell's chance at starting this season will be determined by how quickly he will be able to pick up the offense. If Bell struggles to learn the offense, RB Jonathan Dwyer or RB Isaac Redman could start.

Steelers | Emmanuel Sanders explains offensive struggles

Wed, 01 May 2013 13:23:01 -0700

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Emmanuel Sanders said the team was not on the same page offensively, and that it was obvious, even though it was was not because of the running game. "I like Jonathan Dwyer. We had a new offensive coordinator. At times, we weren't on the same page. And that's obvious," Sanders said.

Steelers | Isaac Redman could have edge in No. 2 RB job

Wed, 01 May 2013 11:52:16 -0700

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Isaac Redman appears to have an edge over RB Jonathan Dwyer for the No. 2 running back job at this point.

Steelers | Two RBs considered complementary backs

Wed, 24 Apr 2013 10:54:59 -0700

The Pittsburgh Steelers consider RBs Isaac Redman and Jonathan Dwyer better suited as complementary backs and are looking to add a starting running back in the 2013 NFL Draft or free agency.

Fantasy Tip: The fantasy value of Redman and Dwyer would take big hits if they do become backups to another running back. They probably would still be in the mix for carries but their statuses will be better known later this offseason. The Steelers' No. 2 running back would have mild fantasy value.

Mon, 11 Mar 2013 20:49:50 -0700

Steelers | Three players tendered offers

Sat, 09 Mar 2013 12:57:51 -0800

The Pittsburgh Steelers have offered restricted free-agent RB Jonathan Dwyer, RB Isaac Redman and DT Steve McLendon the lowest tender. Each player could receive a one-year deal worth $1.323 million if they signed their tender. The team could receive a sixth-round draft choice if they lost Dwyer and will have the right to match any offer Redman or McLendon receives this offseason.

Steelers | Two RFA RBs could get low tenders

Sun, 17 Feb 2013 11:22:09 -0800

The Pittsburgh Steelers may offer the lowest tender to restricted free-agent RBs Isaac Redman and Jonathan Dwyer this offseason. The team could also decide to make an offer to only Redman.

Steelers | Art Rooney says need better production for RBs

Fri, 25 Jan 2013 14:46:01 -0800

Pittsburgh Steelers president Art Rooney II said the team needs better production from the running back position next season whether it be from the running backs on the roster or someone else. "Whether it's [RB Rashard Mendenhall] or [RB Jonathan Dwyer] or [RB Isaac Redman] or somebody else, we have to be better at that position, as well as others, but certainly at that position. In this offseason that's something we've got to look at and decide how we get better and who we get better with."

Steelers | Looking for featured back

Mon, 21 Jan 2013 14:16:08 -0800

The Pittsburgh Steelers will search for a featured back, most likely through the draft, next season because they feel RBs Jonathan Dwyer, Isaac Redman and Baron Batch are complementary backs at best. Batch should have an increased role next season after the team released RB Chris Rainey. Impending free-agent RB Rashard Mendenhall is not expected to be retained.

Steelers | Only one RB under contract in 2013

Sun, 20 Jan 2013 18:27:40 -0800

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Baron Batch (forearm), who is recovering from a broken forearm, is the only halfback on the roster under contract for 2013. RBs Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman are restricted free agents, while RB Rashard Mendenhall is an unrestricted free agent.

Steelers | Rashard Mendenhall unlikely to return

Thu, 17 Jan 2013 10:59:56 -0800

Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent RB Rashard Mendenhall is not expected to return to the team next season. General manager Kevin Colbert said Mendenhall's decision to skip a game this season was "unacceptable." The team isn't very happy with their other RBs, Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman, either.

Steelers | Rushing attack does little

Sun, 16 Dec 2012 21:25:38 -0800

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Isaac Redman led the team with 30 rushing yards on three carries in Week 16 against the Dallas Cowboys, and he had a 14-yard reception on his only catch. RB Jonathan Dwyer carried nine times for just 22 yards, but he was able to find the end zone.

Steelers | Jonathan Dwyer goes nowhere

Sun, 09 Dec 2012 19:45:27 -0800

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jonathan Dwyer led the team in rushing in Week 14 against the San Diego Chargers, but that isn't saying much. He had eight runs for 32 yards, while QB Ben Roethlisberger (shoulder) was second with 31 yards on five rushes. RB Isaac Redman had two carries for no gain.

Steelers | Jonathan Dwyer scores

Sun, 02 Dec 2012 20:14:41 -0800

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jonathan Dwyer carried 16 times for 49 yards and his first career touchdown in the Week 13 game against the Baltimore Ravens. He also had three receptions for eight yards.

Fantasy Tip: Offensive coordinator Todd Haley challenged Dwyer earlier in the week and he responded well. He had 19 touches to just nine for RB Isaac Redman with RB Rashard Mendenhall inactive. Dwyer is a solid low-end RB2 or flex play heading into Week 14 in fantasy leagues of 12 or more teams.

Steelers | OC challenges Jonathan Dwyer to prove himself

Fri, 30 Nov 2012 18:59:58 -0800

Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley challenged RB Jonathan Dwyer this week to handle the bulk of the load without needing time to regroup. "Jonathan's got to show he can take the bulk of the carries without needing a break or taking a few plays off on the sideline," Haley said. "That will be kind of what defines Jonathan as his career moves forward. He's getting a great opportunity. We've been excited about some of the things he's done, and hopefully he goes in and takes this role seriously and won't let us take him off the field."

Steelers | Jonathan Dwyer atop depth chart

Tue, 27 Nov 2012 07:26:39 -0800

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jonathan Dwyer is atop the team's official depth chart. RB Rashard Mendenhall, who had two fumbles in Week 12, is now behind RB Isaac Redman.

Fantasy Tip: Despite the unfavorable report for Mendenhall, he should be retained in mostly every league. Depth chart placements aren't the be-all-end-all in terms of how a player is used, so Mendy could easily prove more valuable than Redman or even Dwyer eventually. The two fumbles in Week 12 may have lost him some trust points with the coaching staff, though. As the season winds down and Pittsburgh gets Ben Roethlisberger (shoulder, ribs) back, this is turning into a RB situation to avoid.

Steelers | Running game goes nowhere in Week 12

Sun, 25 Nov 2012 17:59:36 -0800

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jonathan Dwyer led the team with nine carries and 19 yards in Week 12 against the Cleveland Browns, and he also lost a fumble. RB Chris Rainey carried five times for 17 yards, and added four catches for 15 yards, but too lost a fumble. RB Isaac Redman got in on the fumble parade, losing one, and he finished with two carries for seven yards while added one catch for 15 yards. RB Rashard Mendenhall had four totes for just six yards, and he fumbled twice, losing one.

Steelers | Uncertain who will start at RB

Wed, 21 Nov 2012 06:18:22 -0800

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Mike Tomlin said he is not sure who will start the team's Week 12 game at running back. Tomlin is uncertain how he will divide the workload between RBs Rashard Mendenhall, Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman (concussion), if healthy. Redman performed well on his concussion tests and could play.

Fantasy Tip: The three backs rotated early in Week 11 before Redman's injury in the first half; Mendenhall and Dwyer split the carries later in the game. Mendenhall would appear to be the favorite to start; however, Dwyer had a team-high 12 carries and 55 yards last week. This backfield situation needs to be closely monitored moving forward.

Steelers | Jonathan Dwyer leads team in rushing in Week 11

Sun, 18 Nov 2012 22:38:33 -0800

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jonathan Dwyer carried 12 times for 55 yards in Week 11 against the Baltimore Ravens, and he added three catches for 26 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Dwyer saw 15 touches to 14 for RB Rashard Mendenhall, with RB Isaac Redman (concussion) carrying just once before departing with a concussion. Dwyer and Mendenhall are only worth using as a 'flex' fantasy option heading into Week 12 against the Cleveland Browns.

Steelers | Jonathan Dwyer probable for Week 10

Sat, 10 Nov 2012 18:09:12 -0800

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jonathan Dwyer (quadriceps) is listed as probable for the Week 10 game against the Kansas City Chiefs Monday, Nov. 12.

Fantasy Tip: Dwyer is expected to come off the bench, as Isaac Redman has been working with the starters in practice. However, both should see a good amount of touches, and are worth using as 'flex' options for this very favorable matchup.

Thu, 01 Nov 2012 13:07:12 -0700

Pittsburgh Steelers RBs Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman both feel that RB Rashard Mendenhall (Achilles') should return as the starter when he's healthy. "I mean, Rac is the guy," said Dwyer, referring to Mendenhall by his nickname. "Rac has been here for years, and they drafted him in the first round to be a starter. That's his room and we complement him." It's possible that Mendenhall will miss his sixth game of the year in Week 9. Dwyer and Redman are both expected to play after being nicked up.

Steelers | Jonathan Dwyer hits century mark again

Sun, 28 Oct 2012 13:19:15 -0700

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jonathan Dwyer carried 17 times for 107 yards in Week 8 against the Washington Redskins, starting again because of injuries to RBs Rashard Mendenhall (Achilles') and Isaac Redman (ankle).

Fantasy Tip: Dwyer might be playing his way up the depth chart, regardless of what happens with the health of Mendenhall and Redman. That's back-to-back 100-plus yard games for Dwyer, who would be a solid RB2 or 'flex' play in Week 9 against the New York Giants if he gets another start.
