Rays | Alex Colome picks up save

Tue, 24 May 2016 19:43:09 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays RP Alex Colome pitched two scoreless innings against the Miami Marlins Tuesday, May 24, to pick up his 12th save of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Colome has pitched well while filling in as the closer and has not allowed a run in any of his last 10 outings. Colome is expected to return to his setup position when Brad Boxberger is activated from the disabled list but should still have value in most fantasy leagues.

Rays | Alex Colome's closing time thinning

Mon, 09 May 2016 22:12:38 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays RP Alex Colome will shift to a setup role when RP Brad Boxberger (groin) returns and begins closing games, according to manager Kevin Cash.

Fantasy Tip: The key part is when Boxberger "returns and closes," which hints that he may not close right away. Colome has a couple of weeks to close as Boxberger nears a rehab assignment. Colome is worth holding onto in case Boxberger struggles or suffers a setback when he returns.

Rays | Alex Colome unlikely to be available

Mon, 09 May 2016 16:22:00 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays RP Alex Colome is unlikely to be available in a save situation after working three straight days and four of the last five days. RPs Erasmo Ramirez and Xavier Cedeno could be options in the ninth inning.

Fantasy Tip: Colome has been excellent in the ninth-inning role with Brad Boxberger injured to begin the season. Colome has a 2.08 ERA, 11.1 K/9 and nine saves, and he has made a case to remain in the role even when Boxberger is healthy. That'd considerably raise his standing as a closer, but it's uncertain how the Rays will treat the situation. Keep Boxberger stashed everywhere until we know more.

Rays | Alex Colome picks up first save

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 13:34:56 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays RP Alex Colome picked up his first save of the season Sunday, April 17, in a 3-2 win over the Chicago White Sox.

Fantasy Tip: This was the first save for the Rays all year, but it shouldn't make you think any less of Colome, who has done a nice job filling in for the injured Brad Boxberger. He just hasn't had any situations pop up where a save has been needed.

Rays | Alex Colome could be primary setup man

Sun, 31 Jan 2016 07:43:25 -0800

Tampa Bay Rays RP Alex Colome appears to be the favorite to serve as the club's primary setup man for the 2016 season.

Fantasy Tip: Colome went 8-5 with a 3.94 ERA in 43 appearances (13 starts) last season, with 88 strikeouts over 109 2/3 innings. The 27-year-old right-hander could be of interest to owners in AL-only fantasy leagues and he could see an occasional save opportunity on days when CL Brad Boxberger is unavailable.

Rays | Brad Boxberger the sole closer

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 16:26:28 -0800

Tampa Bay Rays RP Brad Boxberger is now Tampa's sole closer after they traded RP Jake McGee to the Colorado Rockies Thursday, Jan. 28. RPs Xavier Cedeno and Enny Romero are the only left-handers in the bullpen now, alongside right-handed RPs Alex Colome, Steven Geltz, Danny Farquhar and Andrew Bellatti.

Fantasy Tip: Boxberger struggled in the second half last year, but now he has much more leeway and rope as Tampa's ninth-inning closer. The right-hander had a 3.71 ERA last year and a career-high 41 saves.

Rays | Brad Boxberger sticking as closer

Tue, 15 Sep 2015 13:57:11 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays RP Brad Boxberger will remain as the team's closer despite his recent struggles. RP Alex Colome has done well this year, but Tampa Bay apparently prefers to keep him in a setup role.

Fantasy Tip: Boxberger has two blown saves and a loss in September, and he's given up six earned runs in 4 2/3 innings, including four earned runs in just two-thirds of an inning in a blown save against the New York Yankees last night. He should still be owned in all formats because he's still the closer, but he's as shaky as they come.

Rays | Brad Boxberger not in danger

Fri, 04 Sep 2015 14:21:20 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays RP Brad Boxberger is not in danger of losing the closing role in the final month, and manager Kevin Cash still has confidence in him. Cash said there are no plans to switch RP Alex Colome's and Boxberger's roles in the back end of the bullpen.

Fantasy Tip: Continue to run Boxberger out there for saves if you own him, but just know that it could continue to be ugly at times. He's allowed a run in four of his last seven outings with two blown saves and a loss over that span.

Rays | Tampa to go with matchups in ninth

Thu, 20 Aug 2015 15:37:24 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash said he will play the matchups with both RPs Brad Boxberger and Jake McGee (knee) out Thursday, Aug. 20. RPs Alex Colome, Steven Geltz, Xavier Cedeno or Brandon Gomes could all pitch either the eighth or ninth innings.

Fantasy Tip: McGee is having surgery and is likely done for the rest of this year, which gives Boxberger more rope as the team's closer. Boxberger has struggled of late. If you're speculating, Geltz may be your best bet in deeper leagues in case Tampa goes in another direction.

Rays | Alex Colome to be skipped

Mon, 06 Jul 2015 17:46:03 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Colome will be skipped in the rotation following the rainout Monday, July 6, against the Kansas City Royals. SPs Matt Moore and Matt Andriese will pitch the doubleheader Tuesday, July 7, with Colome available out of the bullpen.

Fantasy Tip: Avoid Colome ($4,800; or 9.6% of cap) in FantasyScore until he returns to the starting role.
