Rays | Alex Colome could be primary setup man

Sun, 31 Jan 2016 07:43:25 -0800

Tampa Bay Rays RP Alex Colome appears to be the favorite to serve as the club's primary setup man for the 2016 season.

Fantasy Tip: Colome went 8-5 with a 3.94 ERA in 43 appearances (13 starts) last season, with 88 strikeouts over 109 2/3 innings. The 27-year-old right-hander could be of interest to owners in AL-only fantasy leagues and he could see an occasional save opportunity on days when CL Brad Boxberger is unavailable.

Rays | Brad Boxberger the sole closer

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 16:26:28 -0800

Tampa Bay Rays RP Brad Boxberger is now Tampa's sole closer after they traded RP Jake McGee to the Colorado Rockies Thursday, Jan. 28. RPs Xavier Cedeno and Enny Romero are the only left-handers in the bullpen now, alongside right-handed RPs Alex Colome, Steven Geltz, Danny Farquhar and Andrew Bellatti.

Fantasy Tip: Boxberger struggled in the second half last year, but now he has much more leeway and rope as Tampa's ninth-inning closer. The right-hander had a 3.71 ERA last year and a career-high 41 saves.

Rays | Brad Boxberger sticking as closer

Tue, 15 Sep 2015 13:57:11 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays RP Brad Boxberger will remain as the team's closer despite his recent struggles. RP Alex Colome has done well this year, but Tampa Bay apparently prefers to keep him in a setup role.

Fantasy Tip: Boxberger has two blown saves and a loss in September, and he's given up six earned runs in 4 2/3 innings, including four earned runs in just two-thirds of an inning in a blown save against the New York Yankees last night. He should still be owned in all formats because he's still the closer, but he's as shaky as they come.

Rays | Brad Boxberger not in danger

Fri, 04 Sep 2015 14:21:20 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays RP Brad Boxberger is not in danger of losing the closing role in the final month, and manager Kevin Cash still has confidence in him. Cash said there are no plans to switch RP Alex Colome's and Boxberger's roles in the back end of the bullpen.

Fantasy Tip: Continue to run Boxberger out there for saves if you own him, but just know that it could continue to be ugly at times. He's allowed a run in four of his last seven outings with two blown saves and a loss over that span.

Rays | Tampa to go with matchups in ninth

Thu, 20 Aug 2015 15:37:24 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash said he will play the matchups with both RPs Brad Boxberger and Jake McGee (knee) out Thursday, Aug. 20. RPs Alex Colome, Steven Geltz, Xavier Cedeno or Brandon Gomes could all pitch either the eighth or ninth innings.

Fantasy Tip: McGee is having surgery and is likely done for the rest of this year, which gives Boxberger more rope as the team's closer. Boxberger has struggled of late. If you're speculating, Geltz may be your best bet in deeper leagues in case Tampa goes in another direction.

Rays | Alex Colome to be skipped

Mon, 06 Jul 2015 17:46:03 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Colome will be skipped in the rotation following the rainout Monday, July 6, against the Kansas City Royals. SPs Matt Moore and Matt Andriese will pitch the doubleheader Tuesday, July 7, with Colome available out of the bullpen.

Fantasy Tip: Avoid Colome ($4,800; or 9.6% of cap) in FantasyScore until he returns to the starting role.

Rays | Alex Colome to remain in rotation?

Sun, 10 May 2015 06:16:52 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Colome will likely remain in the starting for the foreseeable future. Rays SP Drew Smyly (shoulder) may require season-ending surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Colome ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) will likely remain in the rotation at least until Matt Moore returns. With an xFIP of 1.86 and a K/9 of 9.00, Colome has a high-upside on FantasyScore and should be considered whenever he takes the mound. Colome needs to be rostered in all standard leagues.

Rays | Alex Colome solid in return

Sat, 02 May 2015 02:02:35 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Colome lasted five innings Friday, May 1, in his season debut. Colome struck out six and allowed three hits as the Rays shut out the Baltimore Orioles 2-0.

Fantasy Tip: Colome ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) looked solid in his return to the lineup, so that is good news. Monitor his progress between starts and keep him under consideration, as he is a decent option at this price.

Rays | Alex Colome set to rejoin rotation

Mon, 27 Apr 2015 13:20:01 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Colome (illness) will rejoin the starting rotation in the series against the Baltimore Orioles which begins Friday, May 1.

Fantasy Tip: Take a wait-and-see approach with Colome ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) in FantasyScore contests. He has a nice pedigree and upside, but just 39 2/3 innings of experience at the major league level. At best, Colome is worth a speculative flier in deep seasonal leagues, but with a rotation spot, he should be owned in all AL-only leagues.

Rays | Alex Colome set for second rehab start

Wed, 15 Apr 2015 22:36:23 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Colome (illness) is scheduled to make his second minor-league rehab appearance with Class A Advanced Charlotte Thursday, April 16.

Fantasy Tip: Colome, who is making his way back from a bout with pneumonia, was in the running for fifth-starter duties before he fell ill in spring training. Itís uncertain if heíll get the chance when he is well, but at least Erasmo Ramirez has been horrible filling in.
