Updating an earlier report, Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said 2B Chase Utley (knees) will not be ready for the start of the season due to a condition in both of his knees. The team isn't seeking a second baseman, and they'll go with 2B Freddy Galvis.

Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel has been gushing over INF Freddy Galvis' play at second base this spring while 2B Chase Utley (knees) rests. "His swings are improving," Manuel said. "I'd say right now you could put him down as the best bunter on our team. Really. I've seen him the other day, drag bunting, sacrificing. He also hit a hard, line-drive single to left field. He also hit a ball in the gap in the warning track to score a run. He knows how to play the game." Galvis is 8-for-30 (.267) in 13 spring games.
