NFL | Jahvid Best's lawsuit thrown out

Fri, 06 Jun 2014 09:03:22 -0700

Former Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best's civil lawsuit against the NFL and helmet makers Riddell and Easton-Bell Sports has been thrown out. The case against the league was dismissed on May 6 due to a non-service dismissal without prejudice. It means that Best likely didn't serve the defendants in a defined period of time. He can refile the suit, but it's unclear if he will.

Lions | Looking to add a RB

Thu, 10 Jan 2013 06:37:09 -0800

The Detroit Lions had just four runs of 20-plus yards this season, tied for fewest in the NFL. RB Jahvid Best (concussion) would have helped in that area, but he could not get activated due to a concussion. As a result, general manager Martin Mayhew said the team will look for a running back with speed and big-play ability. "We need that shifty back that can come in and be a change-of-pace guy and catch passes out of the backfield," Mayhew said. "A guy that can run routes and get one-on-one and beat a linebacker. That's what Jahvid gave us, a guy with some juice and some elusiveness."

Lions | No word on Jahvid Best's long-term status

Fri, 02 Nov 2012 16:35:20 -0700

Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best (concussion) won't play this season after the team opted to keep him on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list. "There has been subsequent evaluation and consultation regarding Jahvid since our last update (October 15)," general manager Martin Mayhew said. "As has been the case throughout, we have deferred to the medical experts and support their current recommendation that Jahvid not return to the field this season." Mayhew did not address Best's long-term future, but the team has clearly missed his speed and versatility in the backfield. The Lions may have to make a decision on his future with them before the NFL Draft or free-agent period after this season.

As of now, it appears unlikely that Best will ever play football in the NFL again.

He was able to come back and have a really good opening game. We're too far away there." Schwarz thinks Best could play right away after he returns, and he said that Best is in the best shape of his career.

Lions | Searching for more RBs

Tue, 28 Aug 2012 15:32:10 -0700

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew has been calling other teams in search of help at the running back position. RBs Jahvid Best (concussion) and Mikel Leshoure haven't been able to stay healthy, and now RB Kevin Smith (ankle) is dealing with an ankle injury. Best will open the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list and Leshoure is suspended for the first two games of the season.

Lions | Jahvid Best starting season on PUP list

Mon, 27 Aug 2012 12:51:36 -0700

Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best (concussion) will begin the regular season on the Physically Unable to Perform list and miss at least the first six weeks of the season.

Fantasy Tip: With Best out at least six weeks, running back Kevin Smith will enter the season as the starter but is dealing with an ankle injury. Running back Mikel Leshoure will also miss the first two games because of a suspension but should receive carries upon his return. Owners should see Smith as a middle-round pick while Leshoure should be a middle- to late-round draft choice. Best will not be a factor until at least midway through the season but likely will play if activated. Owners should think about stashing Best on their roster instead of waiting for his return because he could be gone before his return.

Lions | Jahvid Best's return date remains uncertain

Mon, 20 Aug 2012 13:11:15 -0700

The return date for Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best (concussion) remains unknown. Best has not played since he suffered a concussion Oct. 16 last season against the San Francisco 49ers. There is speculation he will likely begin the season on the reserve PUP list, which would force him to miss the first six weeks of the NFL season.

Lions | Jahvid Best likely to start season on PUP list

Wed, 15 Aug 2012 09:07:10 -0700

Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best (concussion) is expected to start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, which would sideline him for the first six games.

Fantasy Tip: Best is nothing more than a bench flier in fantasy drafts, with the promise being greater in PPRs. This opens the door for Kevin Smith to handle most of Detroit's workload, with Mikel Leshoure (hamstring) being the main complement. Smith has justified draft value as a weak RB3 and a strong RB4; his injury history clouds him, but he could be quite a productive member of this offense. Leshoure is a decent fantasy depth grab as a potential touchdown vulture.

Lions | Jahvid Best could be out for a while

Thu, 02 Aug 2012 10:51:18 -0700

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said the status of RB Jahvid Best (concussion) is still uncertain. "The only thing I will say is we're measuring Jahvid in weeks, not days. He's not day-to-day."

Fantasy Tip: This news puts Best's Week 1 availability in question; his early-season workload will be light even if he returns in the next few weeks. He was cleared for organized team activities only to be put on the shelf for contact drills this summer. Fantasy footballers should downgrade him in their rankings and view Best as a very risky RB3 or a worthwhile gamble as a fourth back.

Lions | Disappointed with Jahvid Best's progress

Tue, 31 Jul 2012 09:50:56 -0700

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said he's "a little bit surprised" and "a little bit disappointed" that RB Jahvid Best (concussion) has not been cleared for contact nine months following his last concussion. Best is symptom-free and has been working out since December. The team isn't in a rush to make a move to fortify the running back corps in case Best can't play. RBs Kevin Smith and Stefan Logan have taken most of the repetitions in training camp so far with RB Mikel Leshoure (hamstring) dealing with a hamstring injury.

Fri, 27 Jul 2012 21:15:46 -0700
