Fri, 29 Nov 2013 14:24:19 -0800
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (hamstring) practiced in full Friday, Nov. 29, and is probable for Week 13.
Fantasy Tip: Mathews has cooled off considerably after back-to-back 100-yard games earlier this year. Nagging injuries continue to affect his productivity. He's best used as a flex play against the Cincinnati Bengals this weekend.
Thu, 28 Nov 2013 20:08:47 -0800

Wed, 27 Nov 2013 14:49:56 -0800
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (hamstring) missed practice Wednesday, Nov. 27, after aggravating his hamstring ailment in Week 12. Head coach Mike McCoy said Mathews still has a chance to play in Week 13 versus the Cincinnati Bengals, though.
Fantasy Tip: Don't hold out hope for Mathews. Have a backup plan in place. Even if he does play, Danny Woodhead may get the bulk of the workload. Woodhead becomes virtually a must-start, especially in point-per-reception leagues, if Mathews is inactive.

Wed, 20 Nov 2013 14:22:56 -0800
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (hamstring) practiced in full Wednesday, Nov. 20.
Fantasy Tip: Mathews' back-to-back 100-yard rushing games seem like a distant memory at this point, and going up against the Kansas City Chiefs won't be the cure. He's a weak play as a flex this weekend.
Sun, 17 Nov 2013 16:17:19 -0800
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (hand) left the Week 11 game against the Miami Dolphins due to a left hand injury, but was able to return after a brief absence. Mathews finished with 19 carries for a season-best 127 rushing yards while also added two catches for 16 yards.
Fri, 15 Nov 2013 13:17:47 -0800
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (hamstring) fully participated in practice Friday, Nov. 15, and is listed probable for Week 11.
Fantasy Tip: It appears like Mathews will be able to play this week and should be in the starting lineup in most fantasy leagues.
Thu, 14 Nov 2013 14:33:12 -0800
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (hamstring) was limited in practice Thursday, Nov. 14.
Wed, 13 Nov 2013 16:46:14 -0800
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (hamstring) practiced in full Wednesday, Nov. 13.
Fantasy Tip: Mathews' hammy injury clearly isn't serious enough from keeping him out in Week 11 against the Miami Dolphins. The 'Phins were gashed by a patchwork Tampa Bay Buccaneers backfield last week and have been one of the worst units at stopping the run all season. This makes Mathews a strong play as an RB2 or flex.
Thu, 07 Nov 2013 17:16:46 -0800
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews is averaging 4.1 yards per carry this season but only has nine carries of at least 10 yards. Mathews is the only running back in the league with more than 100 carries that is averaging over four yards a carry and has so few carries of at least 10 yards.
Thu, 07 Nov 2013 17:13:52 -0800

Thu, 07 Nov 2013 17:01:23 -0800
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews took part in 15 of the team's 66 offensive snaps Week 9 and carried the ball seven times. He received only one carry in the second half and was not involved in any of the three plays the team had inside the one-yard line late in the fourth quarter. The team did not explain why Mathews was not used much during the game.
Thu, 07 Nov 2013 15:59:45 -0800
San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt said the team still has confidence in RB Ryan Mathews despite giving him only one touch in the second half of their Week 9 defeat at the hands of the Washington Redskins. "I feel great about Ryan," Whisenhunt said. "There has never been any indication that we haven't felt great about Ryan. Last time I checked, he's the only back in the league this year that's had two consecutive 100-yard games. I don't understand why you wouldn't feel good about him. We have complete confidence in him. In my mind, he is a good football player." Whisenhunt hinted that the game plan called for something else, especially when the team was near the goal line with time expiring.
Fantasy Tip: It's still a mystery as to why Mathews wasn't utilized in the Bolts' failed goal-line try with the game on the line. Week 10 against the Denver Broncos could be another contest in which the game plan strays from Mathews utilization. It's a weak matchup for him, as Denver's run-stopping efforts have been strong this year.

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (leg) limped off the field again in the third quarter of the Week 6 game against the Indianapolis Colts. He was able to check back into the game, but it is the third time he required assistance on the sideline so far.

Sat, 12 Oct 2013 12:35:57 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (concussion) is probable to play in Week 6.
Fantasy Tip: He probably serves as little more than a RB3 this week as he has not been getting it done.
Fri, 11 Oct 2013 14:51:21 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (concussion) fully participated in practice Friday, Oct. 11.
Thu, 10 Oct 2013 11:22:29 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (concussion) is not participating in practice Thursday, Oct. 10. He has not been cleared to return to the practice field.
Fantasy Tip: Mathews has been known as a slow healer, so it would not be a shock to see him sit out this weekend against the Indianapolis Colts. Danny Woodhead's matchup isn't great, but without Mathews around, it'd be hard not to find room for him in your lineup. Woodhead has much greater appeal in point-per-reception leagues.
Sun, 06 Oct 2013 22:05:46 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (concussion) suffered a concussion in the first half of the Week 5 game against the Oakland Raiders and he will not return.
Fri, 04 Oct 2013 13:23:55 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (hamstring) was limited in practice Friday, Oct. 4, but is probable for Week 5. It's the first time he's been on the injury report this week, and head coach Mike McCoy hinted the team was just being cautious in limiting him in practice.
Fantasy Tip: Mathews shouldn't be in any danger of missing the Week 5 game against the Oakland Raiders. The matchup is nice, but he's still more of an RB3 or flex guy. Danny Woodhead carries more value than Mathews in point-per-reception setups.
Mon, 16 Sep 2013 16:14:53 -0700
The San Diego Chargers have trusted RB Ryan Mathews despite a fumble inside the red zone in the team's Week 2 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Mathews has now fumbled eight times in his career and three times inside the red zone. Despite his fumble last weekend, Mathews played in the second half, although RBs Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown split carries. Mathews was absent for the team's hurry-up drive because of his inability to prove he can hang onto the football. "You're going to play, you're going to make a mistake," head coach Mike McCoy said of his words to Mathews. "You just keep going, don't worry about the last play. Philip (Rivers) has made a mistake, there's going to be a bad call, I'll make a poor decision somewhere. You do something, keep going. The future is now, just keep playing." Mathews carried the ball 16 times for 73 yards against the Eagles.
Fantasy Tip: It's great news for Mathews owners that the new coaching staff has more patience for his ball-security issues. However, if this keeps up, Woodhead and Brown will surely see more carries. Woodhead has more upside and should be owned in most leagues, especially if it's a point-per-reception setup.
Sun, 25 Aug 2013 19:30:28 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews did have a fumble in the team's third preseason game Saturday, Aug. 24, but he was consistent otherwise. He finished with 14 carries, 57 yards and a touchdown. "It was another consistent day for him," head coach Mike McCoy said Sunday, Aug. 25.
Fantasy Tip: Mathews has slipped on draft day, and has been available as late as the fifth or sixth round. He could be a tremendous value if he can finally manage to stay healthy for any length of time.
Mon, 29 Jul 2013 12:30:42 -0700
San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy said he wants to use multiple running backs this season and will use the hot hand at the position. "That's the big thing. Play the hot hand while you roll. If you've got to tap out for a play or two, we'll put the next guy in," McCoy said. RB Ryan Mathews has worked with the first-team and second-team offense during practice and is part of a rotation with RBs Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown.
Fantasy Tip: It would appear Mathews will be the starting running back entering the season but could lose carries to Woodhead and Brown because the coaches want to keep all three fresh. Mathews should be considered a No. 3 fantasy running back this season. Woodhead can be a No. 3 running back in point-per-reception leagues and a No. 4 running back in non-PPR leagues. Brown could be a No. 5 running back in deeper leagues.
Fri, 26 Jul 2013 11:48:42 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews heads into his fourth season, and he understands he has been an "average back" in his first three years. However, he dropped about 10 pounds from his weight last season, and enters training camp at 220 pounds. He is healthy and has big expectations for himself. "I think I can be a top-five back," Mathews said, "and be up with the best of them. I just have to be consistent. That's the main thing, to be consistent with my play."
Fantasy Tip: Be consistent, and stay healthy. The latter has been the biggest issue for Mathews since he came out of Fresno State. We saw this whole movie last season, as he entered the year with big expectations only to suffer a collarbone injury. It isn't necessarily his fault, as much as perhaps some bad luck. However, fantasy owners should be very cautious not to buy into the hype, and have plenty of alternates at the ready just in case.
Mon, 15 Jul 2013 18:44:54 -0700
San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy wants RB Ryan Mathews to be the guy in 2013. McCoy said the depth the team added when they signed RBs Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown was not a reflection on Mathews. McCoy has one message for Mathews; "To have a great year and be the guy."
Mon, 01 Jul 2013 08:03:10 -0700
Updating an earlier report, San Diego Police Sgt. Robin Rose said San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews was not arrested Sunday, June 30. There was an incident at a downtown bar, but it's not certain Mathews was even there.

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews was reportedly arrested after a bar fight in San Diego Sunday, June 30. There has been no confirmation from police.
Wed, 26 Jun 2013 16:46:00 -0700
It seems as though the San Diego Chargers have come to grips with the fact that RB Ryan Mathews won't be the stud three-down running back they envisioned when they traded up to select him 12th overall in the 2010 NFL Draft. RB Danny Woodhead has been very impressive in offseason workouts, and The San Diego Union Tribune's Michael Gehlken thinks Woodhead will be a big part of the Bolts' running attack, taking valuable repetitions away from Mathews.
Fantasy Tip: Mathews will fall far in this year's fantasy football drafts, with good reason. He'll probably have to plummet to RB3 range to have any real profit potential, though, since Woodhead and Ronnie Brown will likely steal touches from him in passing situations.
Thu, 13 Jun 2013 10:33:33 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews said he's "been just an average back." After bulking up last year in an effort to absorb hits more effectively, he has leaned out this year while also incorporating different stretches to stay flexible. Mathews is also studying more, specifically changing and working on understanding his blocking technique.
Fantasy Tip: This doesn't protect Mathews from the presence of Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown, who both stand to take reps from him on passing downs. Mathews, however, could stand to make a solid fantasy profit if he falls to the middle rounds, in contrast to the early-round selections he's garnered over the early part of his career. Woodhead more so than Brown ranks as a late-board trial pick but could wind up earning handcuff designation as the year goes on. Of course, San Diego might jump into the Willis McGahee "chase," so that may change.
Fri, 29 Mar 2013 07:44:49 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews said players eventually grew tired of former head coach Norv Turner's message and tuned him out. "I think we were just complacent," Mathews said. "The time that we spent there - we spent a lot of time there - it was the same thing over and over again. There wasn't anything new. I think he did everything he could to try to make us win no doubt about it. I just think we really got complacent to where we were and what we were doing and thought we were owed to win games." According to Mathews, talent has never been an issue for the team. "We all had the talent," Mathews said. "I think it was just going through the same routine, doing the same thing over and over again. You go there and you do what you gotta do to get ready for practice, go to practice, get out of practice. It was kind of just a routine thing, it wasn't something new. I think the new coaches being in here is going to be good for us."

San Diego Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said he would like to get a running back to complement RB Ryan Mathews. Telesco said he believes Mathews can handle it on his own but must prove he can stay healthy.

Thu, 31 Jan 2013 05:12:13 -0800
New York Jets impending free-agent RB Shonn Greene would be a good fit for the San Diego Chargers in the offseason. The team needs a legitimate running back because RB Ryan Mathews is not durable. If healthy, Mathews and Greene could be a good combination.
Tue, 08 Jan 2013 13:39:07 -0800
The San Diego Chargers are beginning to wonder if RB Ryan Mathews will ever become the type of player they thought he would become when they selected him 12th overall in the 2010 NFL Draft. The team would like him to become more polished and seize the full-time running back role. San Diego used RB Ronnie Brown in a receiving role this year in order to keep Mathews fresh; Brown ran a passing route on 60.4 percent of his offensive snaps, while Mathews ran routes 42.1 percent of the time. Mathews still believes he can be a game-changing back for the Chargers, however. "It's time for me to show them why they bumped up all the spots they did to draft me," Mathews, 25, said. "I've shown greatness at times, and I've shown I can be the worst player at times. You've got to be consistent, and that's what I plan to do, Just be a little more consistent player and just be the guy they knew when they drafted."
Wed, 19 Dec 2012 15:40:09 -0800
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (clavicle) underwent surgery on his left clavicle Monday, Dec. 17, and he is expected to be recovered in plenty of time to take part in the team's voluntary workouts in April. "If you were to ask me four months ago, 'Do you think he's going to break his left clavicle?' I would have said he's more likely to be struck by lightning," Dr. Daniel Kharrazi said. Mathews broke his right clavicle in the preseason. Kharrazi said there is nothing structurally wrong with Mathews' shoulders, and he expects the clavicle to heal at full strength. Kharrazi also said he does not expect Mathews to break either of his clavicles in the future.

Sun, 16 Dec 2012 16:56:50 -0800
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (clavicle) suffered a broken clavicle in the Week 15 game against the Carolina Panthers, and he is done for the season. He suffered a broken right clavicle in the preseason.
Fantasy Tip: Ronnie Brown (hamstring) was sidelined, so if he is unable to return in the final two games, RBs Jackie Battle and Curtis Brinkley are likely to see the majority of the carries down the stretch. Battle and Brinkley would only be worth a look in the deepest of leagues as a flex play in Week 16.
Sun, 16 Dec 2012 14:17:07 -0800

Sun, 09 Dec 2012 19:36:47 -0800
The San Diego Chargers used OG Kevin Haslam at left guard in Week 14 against the Pittsburgh. It was his first NFL start. OG Reggie Wells made the start at right tackle, and it was his first start in the NFL since 2006. Despite the inexperience, RB Ryan Mathews had some running room, going for 65 yards on 25 carries.
Mon, 03 Dec 2012 21:24:47 -0800
San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner indicated Monday, Dec. 3, that injuries and changes on the offensive line have contributed to RB Ryan Mathews' struggles in the run game. "I'm not going to take away from the effort those guys are giving or how hard (the offensive line is) competing," Turner said. "I don't know if I'm going to look at (the film) say Ryan had a lot of room to run." OT Jeromey Clary (knee) left the game early, as did OT Michael X. Harris (ankle) and OG Tyronne Green (hamstring).
Mon, 03 Dec 2012 05:59:16 -0800

Sun, 02 Dec 2012 21:29:20 -0800
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) carried nine times for just 26 yards in Week 13 against the Cincinnati Bengals, and he added three receptions for 25 yards. Mathews left the game briefly to have his right ankle taped on the sideline.
