Chargers | No timetable for Ryan Mathews

Wed, 01 Oct 2014 14:34:21 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee) said he's feeling good, but he has no timetable for when he might return. He wants to make sure he's fully healthy before returning to action. "I'm feeling good," Mathews said. "I'm taking it one day at a time, doing my best to get my full workouts in and do the best that I can to get my knee right."

Fantasy Tip: Mathews didn't practice again Wednesday, and he won't be available to you at FantasyScore this weekend. Without Mathews, the Chargers' running game has been lackluster. Both Donald Brown and Branden Oliver are weak flex options.

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee) did not practice Thursday, Sept. 25.

Chargers | Branden Oliver may see more time

Mon, 22 Sep 2014 02:47:56 -0700

With injuries to both RB Ryan Mathews (knee) and Danny Woodhead (ankle/leg), RB Branden Oliver could see more playing time going forward with the San Diego Chargers.

Fantasy Tip: Oliver would be a clear No. 2 to Donald Brown assuming Mathews is out for a while. Woodhead may be done for the season, so owners wanting a backup for Brown should consider Oliver as a handcuff.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews misses practice

Wed, 17 Sep 2014 13:10:57 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Sept. 17.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews is not expected to play in Week 3, so Donald Brown and Danny Woodhead will get most of the work at running back. Both plays probably are solid options on FantasyScore this week since Woodhead costs $4,900, and Brown costs $4,600. Woodhead may have a little more value on FantasyScore since it is a point-per-reception league.

Chargers | No timetable for Ryan Mathews

Mon, 15 Sep 2014 15:06:00 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee) has no timetable for his return after suffering what is believed to be a Grade 2 sprain (partial tear) of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee, according to head coach Mike McCoy. Mathews is expected to be out at least four weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews is back to the infirmary after playing in all 16 games last season. In the meantime, expect Donald Brown to see the majority of the carries, especially near the goal line. Brown will be a popular addition off the waiver wire in standard leagues.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews out 4-5 weeks

Mon, 15 Sep 2014 10:12:08 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee) suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his knee in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks, according to a source. Mathews could miss four to five weeks, although he's hoping to return before that.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews' absence will increase the fantasy value of Danny Woodhead (especially in PPR leagues) and Donald Brown. Woodhead is likely to see more touches, but Brown could see enough work to be considered a flex in some leagues.

Sun, 14 Sep 2014 15:34:26 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (leg) left the Week 2 game against the Seattle Seahawks in the third quarter due to an apparent leg injury and he was carted off.

Fantasy Tip: With Mathews down, Donald Brown and Danny Woodhead will see an increase in their touches. If Mathews is forced to miss time going forward, both Brown and Woodhead might be solid values in FantasyScore.

Chargers | Trio of RBs all involved early

Mon, 08 Sep 2014 19:51:22 -0700

San Diego Chargers RBs Ryan Mathews, Danny Woodhead and Donald Brown each saw action on the first three offensive plays from scrimmage in the Week 1 game against the Arizona Cardinals Monday, Sept. 8.

Fantasy Tip: FantasyScore owners, and those in weekly leagues, will want to watch this situation all evening. It might be a matter of the hot hand winning the lion's share of the carries. The team has three capable backs, and that kind of situation is maddening for fantasye owners.

Fri, 15 Aug 2014 18:28:28 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (undisclosed) was inactive for the preseason game Friday, Aug. 15, against the Seattle Seahawks.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews feeling healthy

Thu, 14 Aug 2014 16:42:18 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews recently said he's the healthiest he's ever been in his NFL career. Mathews said he's been doing a lot of work to keep his body in shape with help from strength and conditioning coach Kent Johnston.

Fantasy Tip: This is good news for now, but we'll see how he holds up once the season starts. Mathews will be the lead running back in a committee that also includes Danny Woodhead and Donald Brown.

Thu, 07 Aug 2014 20:18:01 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews fumbled while trying to dive into the end zone during the team's preseason opener Thursday, Aug. 7. He finished with five carries for 19 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews is coming off a strong 2013 campaign, but he has struggled with injuries and ball security in the past. He is still worth drafting as a RB2 in standard formats at this point, but a few more fumbles could start to change that.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews entering last season with Chargers?

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 18:33:22 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews' rookie contract will expire after the 2014 season, which means this could be his final year with the organization, in the opinion of ESPN's Eric D. Williams. San Diego recently extended the contract of RB Danny Woodhead and added a player similar to Mathews in RB Donald Brown via a three-year pact earlier in the offseason.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews will continue to be main RB

Thu, 17 Jul 2014 11:39:15 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews will continue to be the team's workhorse at running back because of his physical style, according to offensive coordinator Frank Reich. "Ryan is as tough as a runner as I've been around," Reich said. "He's just a physically dominating runner. And he brings a physical presence to the game, which we love. The offensive line senses it, and they love blocking for him because of his physicality."

Fantasy Tip: Mathews was able to play all 16 games in 2013 and is hoping to do so again this upcoming season. He should continue to receive most of the carries even though Donald Brown and Danny Woodhead are on the roster. Mathews should be considered as a solid starting option at running back in all leagues.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews adds muscle

Tue, 17 Jun 2014 15:54:04 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews showed quick cuts and bursts while running at minicamp Tuesday, June 17. He also appears to have added muscle in the offseason, and he's weighing 222 pounds, which is up seven pounds from last August.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews showed last year what he can do when he remains healthy. He'll remain the team's bell-cow running back and should stay as the goal-line back, as well, giving him more value as a solid RB2.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews remains lead back

Thu, 20 Mar 2014 11:19:12 -0700

San Diego Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said that RB Ryan Mathews remains the team's every-down back despite the signing of RB Donald Brown in free agency. "We know Ryan is our bell cow," Telesco said. "He's our No. 1 back. He had an excellent year last year. And we all know what Danny Woodhead can do in his role. We saw that for 16 games last year. And we think Donald can come in and add to that, too, and give us some different options. And a different style, too. The more weapons we can have for Philip Rivers, the better."

Fantasy Tip: Mathews figures to be a nice RB2/3 again this year, even with Woodhead and Brown around to steal touches from him in the backfield. Mathews loses some luster in PPR leagues, however, because of the presence of the other two backs for passing situations.
