Chargers | Ryan Mathews, Keenan Allen out

Fri, 19 Dec 2014 13:32:38 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee) and WR Keenan Allen (shoulder, ankle) have been ruled out for Week 16 against the San Francisco 49ers.

Fantasy Tip: With Mathews out, Donald Brown ($3,000) and Branden Oliver ($3,000) should see more work. Both are worth considering as sleeper flex options at FantasyScore. Allen's absence means more targets for Malcom Floyd ($4,300), Eddie Royal ($3,100) and Antonio Gates ($6,800). Royal represents the best value buy, but keep in mind that Philip Rivers has been banged up.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews sits out

Thu, 18 Dec 2014 12:35:46 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) did not participate in practice Thursday, Dec. 18.

Fantasy Tip: It does not look good for Mathews to play in Week 16, so owners look to use other options this week. Branden Oliver and Donald Brown likely will receive time at running back if Mathews misses the game. Both cost $3,000 on FantasyScore and could be cheap flex options for owners.

Sun, 14 Dec 2014 12:45:27 -0800

Fantasy Tip: Branden Oliver and Donald Brown probably will share work at running back with Mathews out of the lineup. Both running backs costs $3,000 on FantasyScore, but neither is a great option to use since the Denver Broncos defense does well against running backs.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews fine to play?

Fri, 12 Dec 2014 14:43:21 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle), who hasn't practiced all week and is listed as questionable for Week 15 against the Denver Broncos, could still be part of the game plan Sunday, Dec. 14, according to head coach Mike McCoy. "He'll be fine," McCoy said. "He's played plenty of football in his career, and he knows what to do. He's been here. He's been in the system for the two years we've been here together, so he'll be fine." RB Branden Oliver handled the bulk of the work when Mathews missed seven games this year, but since, he's had just 144 yards in six games.

Fantasy Tip: McCoy seems to be playing it coy in regards to Mathews' status against the Broncos. Because of all the uncertainy, and the fact that the Broncos are one of the best teams at stopping the run this year, it's best to avoid Mathews ($5,700) at FantasyScore.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews questionable

Fantasy Tip: Owners will have to check out the inactive list to see if Mathews will be able to play in Week 15. Chargers | Ryan Mathews sits out of practice

Thu, 11 Dec 2014 14:13:22 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) did not practice Thursday, Dec. 11.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews hasn't practiced two days in a row now. If he does play, it's best to sit him against one of the best run defenses in the league. Mathews isn't worth the FantasyScore price of $5,700 this week.

Fri, 28 Nov 2014 12:27:05 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (shoulder) fully participated in practice Friday, Nov. 28, and is listed as probable for Week 13.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews should continue to receive a majority of the carries. Mathews has a price tag of $5,200 on FantasyScore but likely will not be a great option to use since the Baltimore Ravens have given up the fewest fantasy points to running backs this season.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews fully practices

Thu, 27 Nov 2014 14:13:44 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (shoulder) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Nov. 27.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews ($5,200, 10.4% of cap) has only rushed 28 times through two games since returning from his should injury. Although he has posted respectable numbers, the Baltimore Ravens allow just 88.3 yards per game on the ground. Consider Mathews nothing more than an endgame option in FantasyScore contests, if his salary fits.

Chargers | Bolts managing Ryan Mathews' touches

Mon, 24 Nov 2014 16:32:38 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee, shoulder) has 175 rushing yards in two games since returning from a knee injury, but he's carried the ball an average of 14 times in those two games, with just four carries in the fourth quarter and two in the red zone. Head coach Mike McCoy said that team is monitoring Mathews' touches as he makes his way back from injury. RBs Branden Oliver and Donald Brown are still being sprinkled in. Mathews suffered a shoulder injury in the second half but returned to the game, and the injury isn't considered serious.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews looked healthy and spry against the St. Louis Rams in Week 12. However, be careful not to overvalue him heading into Week 13 in a very tough matchup against a strong Baltimore Ravens run unit on the road at FantasyScore.

Mon, 17 Nov 2014 11:06:46 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee) played 32 offensive snaps in Week 11 but was part of a committee at running back, because the team wanted to ease him back into the offense. Mathews finished the game with 70 yards on 16 carries.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews likely will receive more work as the season goes on and should continue to lead the team in carries. Mathews should be a good starting option each week as long as he can stay healthy.

Fantasy Tip: It appears that Mathews is on track to play in Week 11, but his role in the offense could be limited since he has missed a significant amount of time. Mathews costs $4,700 on FantasyScore but should be seen as a risky option.

Wed, 12 Nov 2014 13:21:00 -0800

Fantasy Tip: Mathews has a good shot at returning to the Bolts' backfield to face the Oakland Raiders this weekend. San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee) will be ready to go once he takes the field again. Head coach Mike McCoy said he's confident Mathews will be successful when he returns from a nine-week hiatus due to a nagging knee injury.

Fantasy Tip: If Mathews does play this week, he could be eased in after such a long break. Branden Oliver and Donald Brown will also still be in the mix, so it might be best to sit Mathews.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews returning soon?

Mon, 03 Nov 2014 17:57:07 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee) could return after the team's Week 10 bye, and Matt Calkins of the San Diego Union-Tribune believes Mathews is "almost assured" to resume his role as the team's lead back.

Fantasy Tip: Brandon Oliver has had a few nice performances in Mathews' absence, but San Diego's ground game has struggled lately. If Mathews does return in Week 11, he will have a friendly matchup against Oakland right out of the gate.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews likely to regain role

Mon, 03 Nov 2014 07:34:36 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee) is all but assured to regain his role as the featured back when he returns. RB Branden Oliver has rushed 32 times for 49 yards in the last two games.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews will be a flex option upon return, but he doesn't play on third downs often. Oliver will likely shift into the third down role, which really hurts his value. Donald Brown is likely to continue to see sparse work.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews to return after bye?

Fri, 31 Oct 2014 14:12:26 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee) is running again in practice, and he hopes to return Nov. 16 after the team's Week 10 bye to face the Oakland Raiders. "Being able to run again is encouraging," Mathews said. "That's a big step. I'm very encouraged. The trainers are doing a great job and I'm just following their plan. Every time they put me through something I'm just trying to do my best."

Fantasy Tip: When Mathews returns, he's likely to be eased back in and share the backfield duties with Branden Oliver. Oliver could still end up being the more valuable fantasy runners for SD, especially in PPR leagues like FantasyScore.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews back in Week 9?

Fri, 24 Oct 2014 18:44:12 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee) missed his sixth consecutive game in Week 8 Thursday, Oct. 23, against the Denver Broncos, but he could return to practice as early as Monday, Oct. 27. However, Mathews is nearing a return and unlikely to miss more than one additional game, if that. Mathews worked out before the game Thursday, and his right knee was stable and he appeared conditioned.

Fantasy Tip: FantasyScore owners will want to see Mathews officially play and make it through one full game to not only knock off any rust, but prove his health as well. The return of Mathews, and potential return of Donald Brown, spells trouble for the value of Branden Oliver.
