Eagles | Ryan Mathews likely back

Wed, 07 Dec 2016 08:02:27 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) will practice Wednesday, Dec. 7, and he's expected to play in Week 14.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews only has 427 rushing yards, but his seven scores have tied a career high. He'll be a flex option against the Washington Redskins.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews expected back soon

Mon, 05 Dec 2016 10:08:11 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) should return to practice Wednesday, Dec. 7, according to head coach Doug Pederson.

Fantasy Tip: We'll see. Mathews has already missed two games with an injury Pederson initially called day-to-day, although MCL sprains are almost always multiple-week injuries. In an offense that has almost completely lost its way in recent weeks and certainly not running the ball enough to support even one runner in fantasy, owners should be able to do better at their flex spot in the fantasy playoffs.

Sun, 04 Dec 2016 08:52:19 -0800

Eagles | Ryan Mathews ruled out

Fri, 02 Dec 2016 08:04:48 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) has been ruled out for Week 13.

Fantasy Tip: Wendell Smallwood is expected to be the lead back with Darren Sproles likely in passing situations. Smallwood didn't impress with nine carries for 37 yards in the role last week, but the Cincinnati Bengals could pose a sneaky matchup advantage. The Bengals' offense is reeling, which could give the Eagles the opportunity to run more. Smallwood is a low-end flex play. Sproles is much of the same in PPR formats only.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews does not practice

Thu, 01 Dec 2016 12:31:11 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) did not participate in practice Thursday, Dec. 1.

Fantasy Tip: It appears like Mathews will miss another game, so owners will need to look for other options. Darren Sproles and Wendell Smallwood would share snaps again in Week 13 if Mathews is out. Sproles can be a low-end No. 2 running back or a flex option in point-per-reception leagues. Smallwood probably can be passed over in most leagues.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews idle Wednesday

Wed, 30 Nov 2016 09:21:54 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) will not practice Wednesday, Nov. 30.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews isn't expected back this week against the Cincinnati Bengals, and Darren Sproles figures to be the most useful back in fantasy. However, he has seven rushing attempts in the last three weeks and is useless unless you have PPR scoring. His receiving totals aren't consistent enough to bank on weekly, but he could fall into the flex pool.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews remains day-to-day

Tue, 29 Nov 2016 09:39:58 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) did not play as expected in Week 12 against the Green Bay Packers and remains day-to-day, according to head coach Doug Pederson.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews is extremely unlikely to play again anytime soon after Pederson termed his injury "significant" and one that "could linger" last week, but we'll go along with the charade for now until he is ruled out for Week 13. Darren Sproles figures to be the most valuable running back on the team moving forward, but he is a flex option at best most weeks. Wendell Smallwood will likely continue to occupy the early-down role in Mathews' absence and doesn't need to be started in most leagues.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews ruled out

Sat, 26 Nov 2016 12:19:40 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) did not participate in practice Saturday, Nov. 26, and has been ruled out for Week 12.

Fantasy Tip: Wendell Smallwood and Darren Sproles likely will share the snaps at running back with Mathews sidelined. Both running backs can be considered at least flex options in most leagues and could also be low-end No. 2 running back in deeper leagues.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews has 'significant' knee injury

Sat, 26 Nov 2016 10:03:09 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) is dealing with a significant knee (injury)" and "there is a concern that it could linger," according to head coach Doug Pederson. Mathews suffered a sprained MCL in Week 11 versus the Seattle Seahawks.

Fantasy Tip: Remember how Pederson called Mathews "day-to-day" on Monday? Owners should expect to be without him for the foreseeable future, paving the way for Wendell Smallwood and Darren Sproles to be the primary backs. Smallwood should serve as the main early-down back and has RB2 upside this weekend versus the Green Bay Packers, but his weekly consistency may be difficult to peg if he gets used as inconsistently as Mathews did.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews ruled out for Week 12

Sat, 26 Nov 2016 08:23:11 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) has been ruled out for Week 12's game against the Green Bay Packers, according to head coach Doug Pederson.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews was unable to practice this week after suffering a right MCL sprain versus the Seattle Seahawks. Darren Sproles and Wendell Smallwood are expected to split carries for the Eagles on Monday night, with both players worthy of consideration as flex options in the majority of fantasy leagues.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews remains sidelined

Fri, 25 Nov 2016 13:08:27 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) did not participate in practice Friday, Nov. 25.

Fantasy Tip: It looks like Mathews may not be able to play this week, but owners should check on his status closer to game time. Since the Eagles will be playing on Monday Night Football, owners may want to avoid Mathews and use healthier options.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews misses practice

Thu, 24 Nov 2016 09:24:32 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) did not participate in practice Thursday, Nov. 24.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to keep an eye on the situation to see if Mathews is in danger of missing the team's Week 12 game. He has rushed for less than 32 yards in three of the last four games but does have four touchdowns during that span. He could be considered a flex option if he is active for the game.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews sits out

Wed, 23 Nov 2016 08:19:57 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) is out of practice Wednesday, Nov. 23.

Fantasy Tip: Before laying an egg last week, Mathews had four touchdowns the previous three games. He has already tied his career high with seven scores thus far. He has plenty of time to get ready of the Green Bay Packers and is a low-end RB2.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews day-to-day

Mon, 21 Nov 2016 10:11:02 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) is being considered day-to-day after suffering a right MCL sprain in Week 11 against the Seattle Seahawks despite being spotted wearing a brace leaving the locker room following the game.

Fantasy Tip: There's nothing in Mathews' history to suggest he is a quick healer and a MCL sprain is usually a multi-week injury for running backs, so owners have every right to be skeptical about his Week 12 availability. For now, owners should consider Wendell Smallwood to be the odds-on favorite to lead the Eagles' backfield in a plus-matchup against the injury-ravaged Green Bay Packers defense.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews has MCL sprain

Sun, 20 Nov 2016 15:59:10 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) left the Week 11 game against the Seattle Seahawks due to a sprained medial collateral ligament, a source said Sunday, Nov. 20. He will be evaluated further over the next 24 hours.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews was just starting to take off again, and now this. Darren Sproles also left with a rib injury, so Wendell Smallwood and Kenjon Barner could emerge as short-term fantasy options if Mathews and Sproles need time to recover.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews scores pair of TDs

Sun, 13 Nov 2016 18:27:03 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews rushed 19 times for 109 yards and pair of touchdowns in the Week 10 game against the Atlanta Falcons. He also had two grabs for 30 yards on his only two targets.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews was back handling a majority of the rushes in the Philadelphia backfield, not Darren Sproles, and Mathews was effective. Despite the solid stat line, treat him as more of a flex fantasy option heading into Week 11 for a tough road matchup in Seattle.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews takes backseat

Sun, 06 Nov 2016 16:22:52 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews carried five times for 15 yards and a touchdown in the Week 9 game against the New York Giants. He also had one catch for no gain on his only target.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews had six total touches to 16 for Darren Sproles, taking a backseat to the veteran scat back. Mathews is only worth a look as a flex option in deeper fantasy leagues unless he scoots back to the top of the depth chart.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews fully practices

Thu, 03 Nov 2016 13:59:21 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (tooth) participated fully in practice Thursday, Nov. 3.

Fantasy Tip: It's rare that something as relatively menial as a tooth would cause a professional football player to miss a game. Mathews will suit up, but he hasn't been consistent at all this year, despite scoring last week. He's part of a committee and has a tougher matchup with the New York Giants. Tread carefully.

Eagles | Darren Sproles running well

Wed, 02 Nov 2016 19:58:36 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Darren Sproles is averaging 6.6 yards per carry over the last four games, and he has played more snaps than RB Ryan Mathews in all seven games the two have played together this season.

Fantasy Tip: Sproles' role and production have been increasing, and he is worth a look as a flex play in Week 9, especially in PPR formats.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews limited

Wed, 02 Nov 2016 12:42:37 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (tooth) was limited during practice Wednesday, Nov. 2.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews should be able to play in Week 9 but probably will have to share snaps with Darren Sproles moving forward. He has rushed for at least 60 yards in only two games this season and probably should only be considered a flex option in most leagues.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews remains lead back

Wed, 02 Nov 2016 08:35:59 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews is still the lead running back, according to head coach Doug Pederson.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews has lost a lot of steam to Darren Sproles in recent weeks, and Mathews is not likely to be out there on third downs very often. He's a two-down back whose upside is pretty minimal outside of a flex play.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews might be replaced

Mon, 31 Oct 2016 19:05:41 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews could be replaced as the team's primary ball carrier. Head coach Doug Pederson said Monday, Oct. 31, that he is considering using RB Darren Sproles as the No. 1 back instead of Mathews. "I can't say that 100 percent," Pederson said. "It's something we'll evaluate in these next couple of days and make that determination."

Fantasy Tip: Mathews had just four carries and eight snaps in the Week 8 loss, and he is averaging just 3.8 yards per carry. He is also the only NFL back with two fourth-quarter fumbles this season. Mathews is only worth using as a flex fantasy option right now in leagues of 12 or more teams.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews a ghost in Week 8

Mon, 31 Oct 2016 07:15:35 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews played just eight snaps Sunday, Oct. 30, against the Dallas Cowboys.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews salvaged his four rushes for 10 yards by taking one of them to the house. His best yardage game was 77 yards in Week 1, and he's quickly falling into the flex scrum in fantasy.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews' job safe for now

Tue, 25 Oct 2016 09:10:29 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews has committed a late fumble in two of the last three games, but head coach Doug Pederson does not plan to demote him. "We don't want to see it, especially in those situations four-minute situations there at the end of the game. We've got to continue to either find out if he's tired, where he's at the end of the game … we'll find out more about that. But by no means am I down on Ryan at all. We just have to make sure that he understands that he can't obviously do that," Pederson said.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews leads the team in carries (67), rushing yards (262) and rushing touchdowns (three), but he's also the only running back on the roster with a fumble. He has been held without a rushing score in four straight weeks, while his 14 carries in Week 7 were his most since Week 1. Thus, owners need to consider him a low-upside flex option with shaky job security.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews leads weak rushing attack

Sun, 23 Oct 2016 14:15:35 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews gained 56 yards on the ground Sunday, Oct. 23, in a 21-10 win over the Minnesota Vikings.

Fantasy Tip: To be fair, both teams' rushing attacks were down somewhat in this game. Mathews is a decent fantasy option, but you might want to wait until he plays a team that is weaker in defending the run.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews sees only 11 snaps

Mon, 17 Oct 2016 09:33:27 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews played just 11-of-52 snaps in a Week 6 loss against the Washington Redskins.

Fantasy Tip: The slight bit of good news for Mathews' owners is that Philadelphia fed him on nine of those plays, which he turned into 60 rushing yards. It was perhaps the one bright spot for an offense that did virtually nothing else of note. Mathews saw only more snap than rookie Wendell Smallwood and just under half as many as Darren Sproles (23), further proving this will be an unpredictable committee for the foreseeable future. As such, Mathews will be hard to trust as anything more than a RB3/flex.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews plays 11 snaps

Mon, 17 Oct 2016 05:29:56 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews played just 11 snaps for 21 percent of the offense Sunday, Oct. 16.

Fantasy Tip: He had nine carries for 60 yards, which boosted his yards per carry to 3.9 per rush on the season. He'll have a tough Week 7 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, and it might be best to avoid that scenario if possible.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews posts decent numbers

Sun, 16 Oct 2016 13:45:56 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews ran nine times for 60 yards in a 27-20 loss to the Washington Redskins on Sunday, Oct. 16.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews didn't score, but he did the best he could against a tough Redskins defense. One of Mathews' runs was for 22 yards, so he averaged almost five yards per run on his other attempts. Consider Mathews a decent RB2 or RB3 for most games.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews expected to play

Fri, 14 Oct 2016 21:45:54 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (illness) is expected to play against the Washington Redskins in Week 6, according to head coach Doug Pederson, but Pederson said he will have to talk with the head athletic trainer before making a final decision.

Fantasy Tip: If Mathews is able to play, he could creep into the RB2 conversation against a Washington defense that has been gashed by opposing running backs this season.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews misses practice

Fri, 14 Oct 2016 13:07:52 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (illness) did not participate in practice Friday, Oct. 14, but is not on the injury report for Week 6.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews should be able to play as long as he recovers from his illness. He recorded 75 total yards and one touchdown in Week 5 but will continue to share playing time with Darren Sproles. Owners should consider him a flex option at this point.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews busy in loss

Sun, 09 Oct 2016 17:27:33 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews rushed 11 times for 42 yards in the Week 5 game against the Detroit Lions, and he added five grabs for 33 yards and a touchdown on five targets.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews has posted four totals touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving) in four games. After a bye, Mathews rebounded after being nearly non-existent in Week 3. Fantasy owners can trust him again as a WR3 heading into Week 6 against the Washington Redskins.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews on track to play

Fri, 07 Oct 2016 13:07:10 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) fully participated in practice Friday, Oct. 7, and is not on the injury report for Week 5.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews will be the starting running back in Week 5 but will be sharing work with Darren Sproles and Wendell Smallwood at the position. Mathews may only be a flex option for some owners because of his limited snaps.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews takes part in practice

Thu, 06 Oct 2016 12:25:01 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) fully participated in practice Thursday, Oct. 6.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews is on track to play in Week 5 and should be the starting running back but likely will share work with Darren Sproles and Wendell Smallwood. Mathews could be a flex option in leagues since he should receive most of the carries during the game.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews practices in full

Wed, 05 Oct 2016 12:27:20 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Oct. 5.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews probably will be the starting running back in Week 5 but will have to share work with Darren Sproles and Wendell Smallwood. Owners could consider Mathews a flex option in leagues but could also bench him if they have better options.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews could see limited workload

Mon, 03 Oct 2016 10:55:41 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) should be active for Week 5 versus the Detroit Lions, but he could see his snaps scaled back as he makes his way back from the ankle stiffness that caused him to play only eight snaps against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 3.

Fantasy Tip: Head coach Doug Pederson has already said the Eagles will employ a committee backfield when Mathews returns, with Wendell Smallwood and Darren Sproles the most likely candidates to join him. Until we get to see a game or two under the new setup, it will be difficult to trust any Eagles' runner as anything more than a flex option.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews will join rotation upon return

Mon, 26 Sep 2016 09:40:29 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) will remain the starter, but head coach Doug Pederson said the team will continue to rotate backs even when Mathews is healthy.

Fantasy Tip: The backfield was already trending toward the committee anyway, as Mathews has only touched the ball 12 times since logging 22 carries in the season opener. Darren Sproles should be considered the best option for Philly whenever the Eagles face a stout run defense, while Mathews is shaping up to be a touchdown-dependent flex option. Rookie Wendell Smallwood and Kenjon Barner will also be involved, likely making this a backfield to avoid going forward.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews absent down stretch

Sun, 25 Sep 2016 22:13:15 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) carried just twice for minus-5 yards in Week 3 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Head coach Doug Pederson did not have information on Mathews' status after the game, but said he would have an update Monday, Sept. 26. Mathews has been dealing with an apparent ankle injury, but he has not missed time despite having an ankle heavily taped.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews was non-existent, while Wendell Smallwood, Kenjon Barner and Darren Sproles all had solid performances. Fantasy owners will want to watch practice closely this week before deciding on Mathews for Week 4.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews nursing hand injury?

Mon, 19 Sep 2016 21:43:15 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (hand) was being checked by trainers in the locker room after the Week 2 game against the Chicago Bears Monday, Sept. 19. The trainers appeared to be looking at his hand.

Fantasy Tip: This might explain why Mathews was limited to 10 total touches to 14 for Darren Sproles. Mathews still has two rushing touchdowns, so the night wasn't a total loss for Mathews and his fantasy owners.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews practices Sunday

Sun, 07 Aug 2016 11:43:00 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) worked with the first-team offense during practice Sunday, Aug. 7, and appeared to be a full participant.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews is expected to be the starting running back for the Eagles this season but will have to share snaps with the other running backs on the roster. He should probably be considered a No. 2 or No. 3 running back in most fantasy leagues.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews returns

Fri, 05 Aug 2016 07:16:27 -0700

Eagles | Ryan Mathews still out

Thu, 04 Aug 2016 05:35:18 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) remains out of practice Thursday, Aug. 4.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews isn't expected to see the field except on first and second down as he isn't a polished receiver. If you're in a PPR league, it's hard to take him until the RB3 range.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews timeline update

Sun, 31 Jul 2016 06:50:12 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) is not expected at practice until later this week, according to head coach Doug Pederson.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews averaged 5.1 yards per rushing attempt last season and has flashed high-end upside throughout his career. The issue has been his inability to stay healthy, and starting training camp on the sidelines isn't ideal, obviously. Still, he's a good bet to see the bulk of carries out of the Philly backfield and should be viewed as an RB2 in standard leagues. He has less allure in PPR settings, though.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews expected back next week

Fri, 29 Jul 2016 08:17:56 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) is expected to begin practicing next week, according to head coach Doug Pederson.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews figures to lead the backs in carries, but he'll come out on third down a lot in favor of Darren Sproles. If you're in a PPR league, he falls to an RB3, but he could be an RB2 in non-PPR leagues.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews placed on NFI list

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 13:23:24 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) was placed on the Non-Football Injury list Wednesday, July 27, after injuring his ankle while training last week. The team also signed undrafted free-agent WR David Watford (Hampton). Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews' injury does not appear to be serious, so he probably will participate in practice in the near future. He is probably the leading candidate to start this season but should lose some snaps to Darren Sproles and Wendell Smallwood during the season. Mathews can be a No. 2 running back in some fantasy leagues but is a risky option because of his injury history.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews not a great fit in offense

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 23:58:58 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews isn't a great fit in head coach Doug Pederson's offense as he wants to move his backs around to create mismatches for opposing defenses in the passing game.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews has never been a good receiver, and he has often been a two-down back. Mathews averaged 5.1 yards per carry last season, but he has had durability issues. With Darren Sproles likely to play on third downs and passing situations, Mathews is a high-end RB3 in fantasy. Sproles is a low-end RB3 in PPR leagues.

Eagles | Durability concerns for Ryan Mathews

Sun, 17 Jul 2016 20:54:51 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews has played in all 16 games in just one of his six NFL seasons, averaging 12 games per year overall.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews could easily produce RB2 numbers when healthy, but you have to expect him to miss at least a few games. Wendell Smallwood could benefit if Mathews does miss time, making him a sneaky, late-round stash.

Eagles | Running back committee in Philly?

Sun, 12 Jun 2016 12:12:05 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews has taken most of the first-team repetitions out of the backfield this offseason, but RBs Kenjon Barner and Darren Sproles shared those reps with Mathews, too. Head coach Doug Pederson expects a committee with those three backs and RB Wendell Smallwood.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews should still be the first Philadelphia running back taken in fantasy drafts, at least for standard formats. Sproles is a PPR delight and is worth a low-end RB2 to high-end RB3 spot in those formats.

Eagles | Kenjon Barner working with starters

Mon, 30 May 2016 02:51:57 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Kenjon Barner has been working with the starters during OTAs with RB Ryan Mathews (groin) slowed by injury and RB Darren Sproles not participating, and beat writer Eliot Shorr-Parks believes Barner's edge over Mathews in speed and agility could earn him the starting job permanently.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews could still end up seeing a lot of the early-down work, but Barner is worth grabbing in the later rounds, especially in PPR leagues. He could end up being a sneaky flex option.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews sitting out

Tue, 24 May 2016 07:47:43 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (illness) is out of practice Tuesday, May 24, due to illness.

Fantasy Tip: With all the buzz hovering over the quarterback situation, something that hasn't had much of a spotlight on it is that Mathews is in line to see the bulk of the work in the backfield. The team traded DeMarco Murray, and trade rumors surround Darren Sproles. Mathews could wind up a low-end RB2 in PPR leagues.
