Chargers | Tuned out Norv Turner

Fri, 29 Mar 2013 07:44:49 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews said players eventually grew tired of former head coach Norv Turner's message and tuned him out. "I think we were just complacent," Mathews said. "The time that we spent there - we spent a lot of time there - it was the same thing over and over again. There wasn't anything new. I think he did everything he could to try to make us win no doubt about it. I just think we really got complacent to where we were and what we were doing and thought we were owed to win games." According to Mathews, talent has never been an issue for the team. "We all had the talent," Mathews said. "I think it was just going through the same routine, doing the same thing over and over again. You go there and you do what you gotta do to get ready for practice, go to practice, get out of practice. It was kind of just a routine thing, it wasn't something new. I think the new coaches being in here is going to be good for us."

Chargers | Shonn Greene would be a fit

Thu, 31 Jan 2013 05:12:13 -0800

New York Jets impending free-agent RB Shonn Greene would be a good fit for the San Diego Chargers in the offseason. The team needs a legitimate running back because RB Ryan Mathews is not durable. If healthy, Mathews and Greene could be a good combination.

Chargers | Doubting Ryan Mathews

Tue, 08 Jan 2013 13:39:07 -0800

The San Diego Chargers are beginning to wonder if RB Ryan Mathews will ever become the type of player they thought he would become when they selected him 12th overall in the 2010 NFL Draft. The team would like him to become more polished and seize the full-time running back role. San Diego used RB Ronnie Brown in a receiving role this year in order to keep Mathews fresh; Brown ran a passing route on 60.4 percent of his offensive snaps, while Mathews ran routes 42.1 percent of the time. Mathews still believes he can be a game-changing back for the Chargers, however. "It's time for me to show them why they bumped up all the spots they did to draft me," Mathews, 25, said. "I've shown greatness at times, and I've shown I can be the worst player at times. You've got to be consistent, and that's what I plan to do, Just be a little more consistent player and just be the guy they knew when they drafted."

Chargers | Ryan Mathews expected to be ready next year

Wed, 19 Dec 2012 15:40:09 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (clavicle) underwent surgery on his left clavicle Monday, Dec. 17, and he is expected to be recovered in plenty of time to take part in the team's voluntary workouts in April. "If you were to ask me four months ago, 'Do you think he's going to break his left clavicle?' I would have said he's more likely to be struck by lightning," Dr. Daniel Kharrazi said. Mathews broke his right clavicle in the preseason. Kharrazi said there is nothing structurally wrong with Mathews' shoulders, and he expects the clavicle to heal at full strength. Kharrazi also said he does not expect Mathews to break either of his clavicles in the future.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews done for year

Sun, 16 Dec 2012 16:56:50 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (clavicle) suffered a broken clavicle in the Week 15 game against the Carolina Panthers, and he is done for the season. He suffered a broken right clavicle in the preseason.

Fantasy Tip: Ronnie Brown (hamstring) was sidelined, so if he is unable to return in the final two games, RBs Jackie Battle and Curtis Brinkley are likely to see the majority of the carries down the stretch. Battle and Brinkley would only be worth a look in the deepest of leagues as a flex play in Week 16.

Chargers | O-line shuffle hurts Ryan Mathews

Mon, 03 Dec 2012 21:24:47 -0800

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner indicated Monday, Dec. 3, that injuries and changes on the offensive line have contributed to RB Ryan Mathews' struggles in the run game. "I'm not going to take away from the effort those guys are giving or how hard (the offensive line is) competing," Turner said. "I don't know if I'm going to look at (the film) say Ryan had a lot of room to run." OT Jeromey Clary (knee) left the game early, as did OT Michael X. Harris (ankle) and OG Tyronne Green (hamstring).

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews carried 19 times for 72 yards in Week 12 against the Baltimore Ravens, and he added three catches or 16 yards.

Sun, 18 Nov 2012 21:54:09 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews carried 15 times for 47 yards in Week 11 against the Denver Broncos, and he added four receptions for 36 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews racked up 83 total yards from scrimmage, which isn't all that terrible, but he failed to score a touchdown for the fifth consecutive game. He remains more of a low-end RB2 or 'flex' play heading into Week 12.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews questionable

Fri, 16 Nov 2012 14:08:00 -0800

Updating a previous report, San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (neck) is listed as questionable for Week 11. He was limited during practice Friday, Nov. 16.

Fantasy Tip: It's an encouraging sign that Mathews practiced before heading into the weekend. Make sure to check back Sunday for his final status. Don't expect Mathews to do much against the Denver Broncos, though; they've held their own against backs in the last month. Ronnie Brown and Jackie Battle will see their workload increase if Mathews is inactive, but both backups would be risky flex plays at best.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews unable to score

Mon, 15 Oct 2012 21:04:03 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews carried 22 times for 74 yards in the Week 6 game Monday, Oct. 15, against the Denver Broncos. He also added four catches for 19 yards, but he was unable to find the end zone.

Fantasy Tip: The 22 carries were his most in four games so far this season, and fellow RBs Jackie Battle (two carries) and RB Ronnie Brown (three carries) were only used to spell Mathews. He is a solid low-end RB1 for fantasy owners going forward.

The San Diego Chargers reportedly believe RB Ryan Mathews is ready to take that next step and return to the starting lineup in Week 6. "He's made the progress we'd like," head coach Norv Turner said of Mathews. In the team's past five quarters, Mathews has 22 carries for 160 yards and a touchdown with seven receptions for 69 yards. He averaged 6.5 yards per touch the past two games, ranking second among all NFL running backs over that span.

Chargers | Norv Turner won't commit to starting RB

Fri, 05 Oct 2012 16:11:41 -0700

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner said isn't revealing who will start at running back between RBs Ryan Mathews and Jackie Battle until the first play of the game in Week 5 against the New Orleans Saints. "It's not a big deal. One had 14 carries and one had 15 carries, and if we can get that done again, it'll be outstanding," Turner said.

Chargers | Jackie Battle listed as No. 1 RB for now

Wed, 03 Oct 2012 12:22:15 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Diego Chargers RB Jackie Battle is listed as the starting running back on the depth chart at this point but a team spokesperson said that is only because Battle started in Week 4. The team still has confidence in RB Ryan Mathews and it likely will not take long before Mathews is listed as the starter again.

Chargers | Jackie Battle listed as starter

Wed, 03 Oct 2012 12:15:22 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Jackie Battle is now listed as the No. 1 running back over RB Ryan Mathews on the team's depth chart.

Fantasy Tip: A follow-up report noted a team spokesperson saying that Battle was listed as No. 1 on the Web site because he "just started last week, so that's why he's there." This alone should remind you about the fluidity of Norv Turner's backfield.

Battle looks like the best red zone option because of Mathews' fumbling issues, but for the long haul, Mathews is the safer bet to finish as San Diego's top fantasy back. Those in point-per-reception leagues should be more confident in starting Mathews, who'll still yield flex value even if he's second fiddle and presents an attractive buy-low opportunity. Battle has been a popular pickup that will chiefly be good for touchdown opportunities; he's not a dynamic runner otherwise.

Mon, 01 Oct 2012 13:57:33 -0700

Chargers | Ryan Mathews sees less time in Week 4

Mon, 01 Oct 2012 10:04:18 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews did not start in the team's Week 4 win, as RB Jackie Battle started the game. Mathews did not play at all in the third quarter, and he had just four carries by the start of the fourth quarter. However, he was featured in the fourth with 10 carries for 60 yards, in addition to an eight-yard reception. Head coach Norv Turner said after the game he has "great trust" in Mathews.

Fantasy Tip: It's clear the team was sending Mathews a message following his costly fumble in Week 3. Despite coming off the bench in Week 4, Mathews finished with a team-high 61 rushing yards. Owners should continue to monitor this situation. If Mathews can protect the football, he will remain the starting back. Battle, however, could see more carries as he was solid in Week 4 with 81 total yards and a pair of scores, in addition to four receptions.

Chargers | GM unhappy with Ryan Mathews' fumbling issues

Fri, 28 Sep 2012 11:50:29 -0700

San Diego Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said he is not happy with RB Ryan Mathews' chronic fumbling issues since entering the league and that Mathews will lose some playing time if he is not able to improve his ball security. "I am very concerned, and it has to stop," Smith said. "I believe you can improve in ball security. And no one works any harder in trying to get better than Ryan. However, if it continues he will play less." Mathews has fumbled 11 times since joining the Chargers. He is averaging a fumble every 42 1/2 times he touches the ball and losing a fumble every 78 touches.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews says he is ready

Thu, 20 Sep 2012 08:12:34 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (clavicle) said he feels ready to play in the team's Week 3 game after practicing Wednesday, Sept. 19. "I feel great, I feel healthy, and I feel strong," Mathews said. "I think (the coaches) know what I can do. I know they know I'm ready. It's a long season, and they're going to be real smart with me. Really, it's just taking it day by day and seeing whether I go Saturday when they make that final decision."

Fantasy Tip: Mathews looks poised to play in Week 3. His addition will only help a Chargers offense that has averaged 30 points per contest but is struggling running the football. If active, Mathews should be viewed as no worse than a RB2.
