San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews' rookie contract will expire after the 2014 season, which means this could be his final year with the organization, in the opinion of ESPN's Eric D. Williams. San Diego recently extended the contract of RB Danny Woodhead and added a player similar to Mathews in RB Donald Brown via a three-year pact earlier in the offseason.

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews will continue to be the team's workhorse at running back because of his physical style, according to offensive coordinator Frank Reich. "Ryan is as tough as a runner as I've been around," Reich said. "He's just a physically dominating runner. And he brings a physical presence to the game, which we love. The offensive line senses it, and they love blocking for him because of his physicality."
Fantasy Tip: Mathews was able to play all 16 games in 2013 and is hoping to do so again this upcoming season. He should continue to receive most of the carries even though Donald Brown and Danny Woodhead are on the roster. Mathews should be considered as a solid starting option at running back in all leagues.

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews showed quick cuts and bursts while running at minicamp Tuesday, June 17. He also appears to have added muscle in the offseason, and he's weighing 222 pounds, which is up seven pounds from last August.
Fantasy Tip: Mathews showed last year what he can do when he remains healthy. He'll remain the team's bell-cow running back and should stay as the goal-line back, as well, giving him more value as a solid RB2.

San Diego Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said that RB Ryan Mathews remains the team's every-down back despite the signing of RB Donald Brown in free agency. "We know Ryan is our bell cow," Telesco said. "He's our No. 1 back. He had an excellent year last year. And we all know what Danny Woodhead can do in his role. We saw that for 16 games last year. And we think Donald can come in and add to that, too, and give us some different options. And a different style, too. The more weapons we can have for Philip Rivers, the better."
Fantasy Tip: Mathews figures to be a nice RB2/3 again this year, even with Woodhead and Brown around to steal touches from him in the backfield. Mathews loses some luster in PPR leagues, however, because of the presence of the other two backs for passing situations.
