Eagles | Ryan Mathews will be evaluated

Mon, 10 Jul 2017 14:35:27 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (neck) will be evaluated when he reports to training camp in regards to his neck fusion. If he passes the evaluation, he could be released.

Fantasy Tip: LeGarrette Blount, Darren Sproles and Wendell Smallwood seem to have taken over the Eagles' backfield, leaving the injured Mathews on the outside looking in. He can be avoided for fantasy purposes until further notice.

Eagles | Cutting Ryan Mathews would hurt cap

Mon, 03 Jul 2017 13:03:10 -0700

Waiving Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (back) with a failed physical designation would result in a salary cap hit of $1,150,000, according to Jimmy Kempski of the Philly Voice. Kempski added that if there were no salary camp consequences, the Eagles may have already released Mathews.

Fantasy Tip: It doesn't sound like good news for Mathews, who could eventually be released this offseason. Cutting Mathews wouldn't hurt the Eagles, aside from financially, as LeGarrette Blount, Darren Sproles and Wendell Smallwood make for a nice three-headed backfield. Considering Mathews' injury history and the Eagles' depth at running back, Mathews isn't a viable fantasy option right now.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews not on the way out?

Fri, 30 Jun 2017 12:26:51 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Darren Sproles told ESPN's Josina Anderson Friday, June 30, that he - along with backfield mates LeGarrette Blount and Ryan Mathews - "can share the ball and everyone can be happy."

Fantasy Tip: Mathews has long been considered to be on the outs in Philly ever since the Eagles signed Blount, presumably since the latter was supposed to take the former's "big-back" role in the offense. Mathews has to be cleared yet from offseason neck surgery, so his release still seems the most likely move for Philadelphia. Even if he sticks on the roster, he'll be hard to trust as anything more than a RB5.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews done in Philly?

Wed, 17 May 2017 10:00:10 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews is expected to be released once he is healthy following the signing of LeGarrette Blount, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews has long been rumored to be out in Philadelphia, so Schefter isn't really breaking any new news here. The official move may take a while to happen, since the 29-year-old is still healing from neck surgery. Mathews may get another shot or two at running in the NFL, but his days of being a somewhat useful fantasy back are probably coming to an end.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews cleared to work out

Sat, 29 Apr 2017 18:30:03 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (back) has been cleared to work out, executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman said Saturday, April 29.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews has battled injuries his entire career, and even if he ends up leading Philadelphia's backfield to start 2017, you can't count on him being available the entire season. Consider him a RB4 or RB5 at this point.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews likely done in Philly

Sat, 04 Mar 2017 15:25:18 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews "probably has played his last game for the Eagles", according to the Philadelphia Daily News' Paul Domowitch.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews is entering his age-30 season, coming off a serious neck injury and owed a non-guaranteed $4 million salary in 2017, so Domowitch is probably right. Wendell Smallwood, Darren Sproles, Kenjon Barner, Byron Marshall and Terrell Watson are all under contract as well, although none of them can be viewed as the long-term answer in Philadelphia. Expect the Eagles to take advantage of the deep draft class at running back sometime on the second or third day of the draft.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews making progress

Wed, 01 Mar 2017 13:09:20 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (back) is making good progress in his recovery from a back injury and is expected to be ready for next season, according to general manager Howie Roseman.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews is expected to be released once he is fully recovered from his injury, so he probably will have a new team in 2017. He finished this season with 661 rushing yards and eight touchdowns but has not played a full 16-game season since 2013. He likely will sign with a team this offseason but will probably only be considered a No. 4 or No. 5 running back in fantasy leagues.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews likely gone

Wed, 25 Jan 2017 08:23:17 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews is expected to be released in the offseason, in the opinion of PhillyVoice.com's Jimmy Kempski.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews' season was cut short with a neck injury, and it could threaten his career. His fantasy forecast is pretty cloudy for 2017.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews goes to injured reserve

Tue, 27 Dec 2016 15:22:21 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (back) was placed on season-ending injured reserve Tuesday, Dec. 27.

Fantasy Tip: It's an unfortunate end to what was a solid season for the former San Diego Charger, registering a career-high eight rushing touchdowns to go along with 661 yards on the ground, his most since 2013. Mathews actually needs surgery, so this might affect his status going into training camp next year. With him out, Darren Sproles and Byron Marshall each get a boost. Sproles in particular will have a nice ceiling for Week 17.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews done for the season

Fri, 23 Dec 2016 10:20:23 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (back) has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering a herniated disc during the team's Week 16 win over the New York Giants and will miss "significant time", according to head coach Doug Pederson, who added his running back will need surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Despite running for a career-high eight touchdowns this year, Mathews continues to be plagued by injuries, as he missed two weeks earlier in the season with an MCL sprain. The 29-year-old back is due $4 million in 2017 - the final season of his three-year contract - and could be a candidate for an offseason release. Darren Sproles and Byron Marshall are the only healthy backs left on the roster, so look for the Eagles to add one to the roster before they host the Dallas Cowboys in Week 17.
