San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews said players eventually grew tired of former head coach Norv Turner's message and tuned him out. "I think we were just complacent," Mathews said. "The time that we spent there - we spent a lot of time there - it was the same thing over and over again. There wasn't anything new. I think he did everything he could to try to make us win no doubt about it. I just think we really got complacent to where we were and what we were doing and thought we were owed to win games." According to Mathews, talent has never been an issue for the team. "We all had the talent," Mathews said. "I think it was just going through the same routine, doing the same thing over and over again. You go there and you do what you gotta do to get ready for practice, go to practice, get out of practice. It was kind of just a routine thing, it wasn't something new. I think the new coaches being in here is going to be good for us."

New York Jets impending free-agent RB Shonn Greene would be a good fit for the San Diego Chargers in the offseason. The team needs a legitimate running back because RB Ryan Mathews is not durable. If healthy, Mathews and Greene could be a good combination.

The San Diego Chargers are beginning to wonder if RB Ryan Mathews will ever become the type of player they thought he would become when they selected him 12th overall in the 2010 NFL Draft. The team would like him to become more polished and seize the full-time running back role. San Diego used RB Ronnie Brown in a receiving role this year in order to keep Mathews fresh; Brown ran a passing route on 60.4 percent of his offensive snaps, while Mathews ran routes 42.1 percent of the time. Mathews still believes he can be a game-changing back for the Chargers, however. "It's time for me to show them why they bumped up all the spots they did to draft me," Mathews, 25, said. "I've shown greatness at times, and I've shown I can be the worst player at times. You've got to be consistent, and that's what I plan to do, Just be a little more consistent player and just be the guy they knew when they drafted."

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (clavicle) underwent surgery on his left clavicle Monday, Dec. 17, and he is expected to be recovered in plenty of time to take part in the team's voluntary workouts in April. "If you were to ask me four months ago, 'Do you think he's going to break his left clavicle?' I would have said he's more likely to be struck by lightning," Dr. Daniel Kharrazi said. Mathews broke his right clavicle in the preseason. Kharrazi said there is nothing structurally wrong with Mathews' shoulders, and he expects the clavicle to heal at full strength. Kharrazi also said he does not expect Mathews to break either of his clavicles in the future.

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (clavicle) suffered a broken clavicle in the Week 15 game against the Carolina Panthers, and he is done for the season. He suffered a broken right clavicle in the preseason.
Fantasy Tip: Ronnie Brown (hamstring) was sidelined, so if he is unable to return in the final two games, RBs Jackie Battle and Curtis Brinkley are likely to see the majority of the carries down the stretch. Battle and Brinkley would only be worth a look in the deepest of leagues as a flex play in Week 16.
