I think he was here on a couple days when I came on a visit, so we kind of knew exactly what was going on.

The Detroit Lions aren't rushing to sign DT Ndamukong Suh to a big contract extension, and the team continues to insist that his contract situation isn't hurting the team on the free-agent market. Suh carries a salary cap hit of $22.4 million for this year. "You absolutely would not have more room," president Tom Lewand said. "(His) cap number would have been lower, but if you just look at the cap number in any given year, you're looking at the wrong thing. Absolutely wrong thing."
Sun, 09 Mar 2014 22:15:08 -0700
Although Detroit Lions DT Ndamukong Suh and his $22.4 million cap number takes up 17 percent of the salary cap, that will not impact the Lions' wish to go after free agents. "The fact we won't have an extension done with Ndamukong before free agency begins doesn't affect that plan one bit," Lions team president Tom Lewand said. "It doesn't affect our valuation of the free agents, it doesn't affect what our projection of our cap situation is going forward, and it doesn't affect how we project eventually working an extension with Ndamukong out at some point in time."

"I think this will get done on the eve of free agency or the eve of the start of the new league year, which is when free agency starts," Mayhew said. "Or some time shortly after the start of the new league year. That will be a good timetable for it." NFL free agency begins March 11. Suh currently has yet to hire another agent after firing Roosevelt Barnes of Relativity Sports in January.

Detroit Lions DT Ndamukong Suh's presence on the roster comes with a price tag of $22.4 million, which gives the team almost no flexibility to do anything else in free agency. Even with the extra $11.5 million the team saved by releasing S Louis Delmas and WR Nate Burleson, the Lions do not have enough cap space to sign all of the team's prospective draft picks this May. Still, Lions president Tom Lewand would like to get Suh under contract, even if some pieces have to be moved into different places.
