Minnesota Vikings RB Toby Gerhart was expected to split time with RB Adrian Peterson early on, but he ended up in the same backup role he's always been. Gerhart is entering a contract year, and he has minimal mileage on his body. He figures to return as Peterson's primary backup unless the team can find value in the trade market.

Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said the team has some concern over RB Toby Gerhart's three fumbles in Week 3 because they do not want him to lose confidence. "We're going to need Toby to make big plays for us throughout this season and we've got to keep his confidence up," Frazier said. "We know he's capable of holding onto the football. He usually does a good job with that. We don't want him to go in the tank and get down."

Minnesota Vikings RB Toby Gerhart had six carries for 18 yards in Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and he added one reception for eight yards.
Fantasy Tip: Gerhart was expected to split carries with RB Adrian Peterson (knee), but Peterson ended up galloping 17 times for 84 yards and two scores despite suffering torn knee ligaments in Week 17 last season. It appears Gerhart should only be used as a 'flex' fantasy option in the deepest of leagues unless Peterson suffers some sort of setback.

Minnesota Vikings RB Toby Gerhart carried five times for 31 yards in the preseason opener Friday, Aug. 10, against the San Francisco 49ers. Head coach Leslie Frazier commented that he was impressed how "forceful"Gerhart was. "We've avoided contact with him in training camp," Frazier said. "Now we wanted to take him down and just see how forceful he ran the football and his presence."

Updating a previous report, Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave said Tuesday, Aug. 7, that the team will "be a little more cautious" with RB Toby Gerhart and his workload. It's mostly due to the availability and uncertainty of RB Adrian Peterson (knee), so they want to keep Gerhart as healthy as possible just in case.

There are no plans by the Minnesota Vikings coaching staff to let RB Toby Gerhart shoulder a heavier load in the preseason opener Friday, Aug. 10, against the San Francisco 49ers. "We'll get him in there some," head coach Leslie Frazier said Monday, Aug. 6, "but we're not going to hand it off to him a lot, not in the preseason. He'll have limited reps for sure."
