Lions | Golden Tate wants to return punts

Fri, 29 Jul 2016 18:50:29 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate has expressed his interest in continuing to serve as the club's primary punt returner this season. He averaged 7.5 yards per return in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Tate is expected to be the team's No. 1 receiver following the retirement of Calvin Johnson and he has actually led the Lions in receptions over the past two seasons. However, Detroit may want to avoid using him on special teams because he is such a valuable part of their offense. WRs T.J. Jones, Jeremy Kerley and Andre Roberts also have plenty of experience returning punts and could compete for the role during the preseason.

Lions | Quiet finish for Golden Tate

Sun, 03 Jan 2016 19:59:00 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate posted four receptions for 34 yards in the Week 17 game against the Chicago Bears. He was targeted six times.

Fantasy Tip: Tate helped early in the fantasy playoffs, posting four total touchdowns from Week 14 to 15, but he managed just eight grabs for 93 yards and no scores in the final two games. He remains more of a WR2/3 or flex fantasy option heading into 2016 after hauling in 90 receptions for 813 yards and six scores.

Lions | Pair of scores for Golden Tate

Mon, 21 Dec 2015 22:48:53 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate posted six receptions for 45 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the Week 15 game against the New Orleans Saints Monday, Dec. 21.

Fantasy Tip: Tate made the best of his team-high six targets. Despite the two first-half scores he remains more of a WR3 or flex FantasyScore option going forward.

Lions | Golden Tate finds end zone twice

Sun, 13 Dec 2015 18:25:53 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate posted nine receptions for 60 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the Week 14 game against the St. Louis Rams. He was targeted 10 times.

Fantasy Tip: Tate was the receiver of choice with Calvin Johnson nearly non-existent. Everyone in the Detroit passing game should excel in Week 15 against a terrible New Orleans Saints pass defense in Week 15 on Monday night.

Lions | Golden Tate probable

Wed, 02 Dec 2015 14:26:44 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate (calf) is listed as probable for Week 13.

Fantasy Tip: Tate ($5,400, 10.8% of cap) has played pretty well over his last few games. He's somewhat of an unsung player on the same team as Calvin Johnson, but he's worth a shot in FantasyScore lineups this week in what could be a shootout with the Green Bay Packers.

Lions | Golden Tate a full participant

Tue, 01 Dec 2015 13:21:18 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate (calf) participated fully in practice Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Fantasy Tip: Tate ($5,400, 10.8% of cap) was limited yesterday, so the upgrade is promising, and it looks like Tate will be able to play against the Green Bay Packers Thursday night. The Packers have played well defensively against wide receivers this season, though, so lower your expectations for Tate this week.

Lions | Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate limited

Mon, 30 Nov 2015 13:59:42 -0800

Detroit Lions WRs Calvin Johnson (ankle) and Golden Tate (calf) were limited in practice Monday, Nov. 30.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson being limited in practice is like snow being white, so this shouldn't be a big surprise. Johnson and Tate should both be monitored leading up to Thursday night's game, of course. Unfortunately, they have a tough matchup against the Green Bay Packers, who have been one of the better fantasy defenses against wide receivers this year.

Lions | Golden Tate not producing

Sat, 14 Nov 2015 19:48:31 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate has yet to record a 100-yard game in 2015, and he has finished with fewer than 60 receiving yards in six of his eight games.

Fantasy Tip: Calvin Johnson ($7,300, 14.6% of cap) is questionable to suit up in Week 10, but unless he is sidelined, Tate ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) isn't worth using at FantasyScore as a secondary option in a struggling offense.

Lions | Detroit expecting physical game

Fri, 23 Oct 2015 14:10:07 -0700

Detroit Lions WRs Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate expect the Minnesota Vikings to be physical with them in their Week 7 matchup. Minnesota hasn't allowed a team to throw for 300 yards this year and haven't allowed an opposing quarterback to complete more than 65.4% of his passes. QB Matthew Stafford typically has favored short passes against the Vikes as a result. Johnson is likely to draw CB Xavier Rhodes, who is a big and physical cornerback. Johnson only has two 100-yard games in 14 career contests against the Vikings and has double-digit targets in five of those games. Tate has been targeted at least 10 times twice in his three games against Minnesota and has had at least six catches in each game.

Fantasy Tip: Both receivers could have decent games, but Tate ($5,700, 11.4% of cap) is clearly the better value pick against a physical secondary because of his ability to excel on the shorter slants and routes.

Lions | Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate probable

Fri, 23 Oct 2015 14:05:47 -0700

Detroit Lions WRs Calvin Johnson (ankle) and Golden Tate (ankle) were both limited in practice Friday, Oct. 23, but are listed as probable for Week 7 against the Minnesota Vikings.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($7,200, 14.4% of cap) is a new addition to the injury report, but his injury doesn't appear to be very serious. Megatron had his best game of the season by far last week and had his only other touchdown against Minnesota in Week 2. He should be a safe receiver pick. Tate ($5,700, 11.4% of cap) also produced against the Vikes earlier this year and is a fine value pick with Matthew Stafford looking to keep things rolling.

Lions | Golden Tate expected to play

Fri, 16 Oct 2015 13:44:19 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate (hip) was limited in practice for the second straight day Friday, Oct. 16, but is listed as probable for Week 6 against the Chicago Bears.

Fantasy Tip: This could be the game Detroit finally opens things up in the aerial game with several of their running backs hurt. Tate ($6,000, 12.0% of cap) had a whopping 18 targets in Week 5 and could be heavily looked at again if Chicago tries to keep Calvin Johnson quiet.

Lions | Theo Riddick, Golden Tate limited

Thu, 15 Oct 2015 14:45:42 -0700

Detroit Lions RB Theo Riddick (groin) and WR Golden Tate (hip) were both limited in practice Thursday, Oct. 15.

Fantasy Tip: Neither injury appears serious and both should be able to play against the Chicago Bears. Riddick ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) has become the most trusted pass-catching back for Detroit, and he should continue to see work even with Joique Bell returning. Consider Riddick a sleeper pick as a flex. Tate ($6,000, 12.0% of cap) hasn't done much yet but has a fine matchup to break out in Week 6.

Lions | Subpar game for Golden Tate

Mon, 05 Oct 2015 21:42:52 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate posted three receptions for 29 yards in the Week 4 game against the Seattle Seahawks Monday, Oct. 5. He was targeted four times.

Fantasy Tip: Tate ($6,000, 12.0% of cap) hasn't found the end zone in four games, and is an overpriced option in FantasyScore until he starts to score regularly.

Lions | Golden Tate says offense is predictable

Tue, 29 Sep 2015 11:50:38 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate said in each of the first three games this season he has had opponents tell him they knew the plays that were being called. "I don't know how they know or what film they're watching that we're giving away," Tate said. "That's something we got to go back and watch our tendencies to figure out where we line up or how we line up or what formation or whatever it may be."

Fantasy Tip: The Lions are one of four teams currently at 0-3, and what has usually been a high-flying offense has sputtered so far. Tate ($6,000, 12.0% of cap) is risky on FantasyScore this week playing on the road versus the Seattle Seahawks.

Lions | Golden Tate will continue returning punts

Fri, 18 Sep 2015 13:44:58 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate (quadriceps) was injured returning a punt in Week 1, but the Lions defended using him as their punt returner and will continue to do so. "So we look at it week-to-week, depending upon what we think we need to get done. So there will probably be times you'll see him back there again, and we'll move on," head coach Jim Caldwell said. Caldwell also said RB Ameer Abdullah is capable of handling return duties. Tate returned two punts for a 17-yard average in Week 1.

Fantasy Tip: Tate's ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) fantasy value is even greater in leagues that reward return yardage. He should continue to be a receiving force for the Lions opposite Calvin Johnson in 2015, but make sure he's active in Week 2 before using him on FantasyScore.

Lions | Golden Tate expected to play

Fri, 18 Sep 2015 13:33:30 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate (quadriceps) was limited in practice Friday, Sept. 18, but he is listed as probable for Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings.

Fantasy Tip: Tate ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) was held in check in Week 1 against the San Diego Chargers but actually produced more than Calvin Johnson. Don't expect that to happen regularly, although Tate can still be a solid daily pick if opponents continue to double team Megatron. With Tate expected to suit up, he's a fine FantasyScore selection against the Vikes.

Lions | Golden Tate returns to practice

Thu, 17 Sep 2015 14:07:05 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate (quadriceps) returned to practice as a limited participant Thursday, Sept. 17.

Fantasy Tip: This is a good sign that Tate will be able to play this weekend. He and the rest of the Lions are looking to rebound from a disappointing performance against the San Diego Chargers last week. Still, when there's an injury there's some risk. There are better options than Tate ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) on Fantasy Score for Week 2, but he should still be considered.

Lions | Golden Tate misses practice

Wed, 16 Sep 2015 13:57:40 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate (quadriceps) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Sept. 16.

Fantasy Tip: It is not known if Tate ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) is dealing with a serious injury, so owners should monitor his situation during the week. Tate recorded only 24 yards in the team's Week 1 game but could still be a solid starting option in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings.

Lions | Golden Tate sought often against MIN

Wed, 16 Sep 2015 07:34:20 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate had 14 catches for 82 yards and a touchdown in two games against the Minnesota Vikings in 2014.

Fantasy Tip: Tate had seven grabs in each game, and one of them had a healthy Calvin Johnson. Tate ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) is more than a dink-and-dunk receiver and is a solid WR2 on FantasyScore this week.

Lions | Golden Tate could be used as returner

Mon, 07 Sep 2015 16:20:51 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate could be a candidate to return punts this season, according to head coach Jim Caldwell.

Fantasy Tip: Tate ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) will be one of the starting wide receivers this season, so it is not known how often he will be used in the role. Tate is coming off a solid offensive season and could be a solid option on FantasyScore.

Lions | Golden Tate plays well

Sat, 29 Aug 2015 11:33:23 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate caught three passes for 91 yards and a touchdown Friday, Aug. 28. The touchdown came on a 62 yard strike from QB Matthew Stafford.

Fantasy Tip: Tate has scored twice this preseason, solidifying himself as a deep threat again this year. He is coming off a career year, but that was partly because Calvin Johnson missed some time. Tate should still be taken as a WR2.

Lions | Ryan Broyles on outside looking in?

Wed, 12 Aug 2015 21:10:39 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Ryan Broyles is not expected to make the 53-man roster, according to beat writer Tim Twentyman. He feels the Lions will keep five wide receivers with WRs Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate, Corey Fuller, Jeremy Ross and Lance Moore making the roster.

Fantasy Tip: Broyles was ultra-talented coming out of college, but injuries have made him a fringe NFL player. Even if he makes the roster he is not projected to be useful in fantasy football.

Lions | Golden Tate wants to avoid letdown

Thu, 09 Jul 2015 18:36:42 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate has spent the offseason working on his flexibility and eating healthier in an attempt to improve his conditioning and avoid a letdown in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Tate set new career highs with 99 catches for 1,331 yards last season, and while his numbers likely received an added boost because of injuries that limited Calvin Johnson, Tate should still be a solid WR3 in 2015 and a potential WR2 in points per reception formats.

Lions | Golden Tate continues to produce

Sun, 21 Dec 2014 14:37:01 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate posted 62 receiving yards on five catches in the Week 16 game against the Chicago Bears.

Fantasy Tip: Tate continues to add to this career high, as he now sits at 1,224 receiving yards on the season. He and Calvin Johnson are the first pair of Detroit receivers to have 1,000 yards in the same season since 2006. Tate is a solid WR2 or flex play in Week 17 against the Green Bay Packers. He had five receptions for 51 yards in the first matchup with the Pack in Week 3.

Thu, 04 Dec 2014 16:33:39 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate is another number one receiver in addition to Calvin Johnson, according to Tampa Bay Buccaneers CB Johnthan Banks. Buccaneers defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier said Tate opens up the Lions' passing game and gives Johnson and the rest of the offense more help.

Fantasy Tip: Tate is once again another solid option on FantasyScore this week at $6,700. Tampa Bay is tied for the second most receiving touchdowns allowed to the position this year (16).

Lions | Golden Tate hits 1,000 yards

Sun, 23 Nov 2014 15:44:24 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate had four receptions for 97 yards in Week 12 against the New England Patriots. He went over 1,000 yards receiving for the first time in his career.

Fantasy Tip: Tate has emerged as a must-start option in FantasyScore score with or without Calvin Johnson lining up on the opposite side.

Lions | Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate probable

Fri, 21 Nov 2014 14:12:05 -0800

Detroit Lions WRs Calvin Johnson (ankle, elbow) and Golden Tate (hip) are both listed as probable for Week 12 against the New England Patriots. Johnson and Tate were both limited in practice Friday, Nov. 21, and Tate was a surprise addition to the injury report.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($7,900) is never a bad option for your FantasyScore rosters, but the New England Patriots secondary isn't shabby, especially of late. Tate ($6,700) may have the tougher go of it Sunday if he's covered by Darrelle Revis all day.

Lions | Golden Tate slated for Revis Island

Wed, 19 Nov 2014 07:37:51 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate is expected to be covered by New England Patriots CB Darrelle Revis, while CB Brandon Browner figures to cover WR Calvin Johnson in Week 12.

Fantasy Tip: Tate ($6,700; 13.4% of your cap) was only targeted twice last week with Arizona Cardinals CB Patrick Peterson looming. The matchup and Megatron's return likely hurt him, and he doesn't have a great outlook this week on FantasyScore either. Johnson ($7,900; 15.8%) was targeted 12 times, but he only had a 5-59 line. His prospects are a bit higher, but one must weigh the price and the potential output.

Lions | Golden Tate not targeted much

Mon, 17 Nov 2014 10:54:40 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate was only targeted two times during the team's Week 11 game, but head coach Jim Caldwell said that was not the plan during the game. "The plays that we call are maybe the same plays where he would have gotten the ball previously. You look at the progressions. There may be a guy in front of him and (the quarterback) may have to go somewhere else. Those are thing that happen more so than we're saying, 'You know what, we're not designing any plays to go to Golden'. That wasn't the case," Caldwell said. Tate finished the game with two catches for 41 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Tate has had a terrific season so far, but there are times when a receiver is not being thrown to during games for some reason. Tate should be still be a starting option this week but will be facing a tough New England Patriots defense.

Lions | Golden Tate could draw Peterson matchup

Sun, 16 Nov 2014 05:59:34 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate could be blanketed by Arizona Cardinals CB Patrick Peterson Sunday, Nov. 16. ESPN analyst Merrill Hoge thinks that Peterson is better suited to cover Tate, while CB Antonio Cromartie covers WR Calvin Johnson.

Fantasy Tip: Tate ($7,000; 14.0% of your cap) has loomed large all season, but this matchup could be difficult. Johnson ($7,900; 15.8%) might make for the better buy on FantasyScore today if this situation holds true.

Lions | Calvin Johnson expects to return after bye

Wed, 29 Oct 2014 09:32:39 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) said he "definitely expects to play" against the Miami Dolphins after the team's bye week. Johnson has missed the last three games due to a high right ankle sprain. WR Golden Tate has 24 catches for 349 yards and two touchdowns in Johnson's absence.

Fantasy Tip: As soon as Johnson returns to action, he should be returned to fantasy lineups. Tate won't completely disappear, but his value is likely at it's peak for this season.

Lions | Another big game for Golden Tate?

Fri, 24 Oct 2014 19:09:48 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate will be facing the league's 29th ranked pass defense in Week 8 against the Atlanta Falcons.

Fantasy Tip: A source said Calvin Johnson (ankle) is likely to sit again, so Tate would be the No. 1 wideout against a leaky Atlanta pass defense. A trip to the end zone and triple-digit yardage total is a good possibility. At $6,900 (or 13.8 percent of the cap), Tate is a sound investment.

Lions | Golden Tate making consistent impact

Tue, 21 Oct 2014 20:28:09 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate is one of just two receivers to have at least five receptions in each of the first seven games of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Tate has also topped 100 yards in three of the last four weeks, and although Calvin Johnson's absence in recent weeks has boosted his production, Tate has been steady force in the Detroit passing attack all year. Regardless of whether or not Johnson suits up in Week 8, Tate ($6,900, 13.8% of cap) is worth starting at FantasyScore against an atrocious Atlanta defense.

Lions | Calvin Johnson misses another practice

Fri, 17 Oct 2014 09:12:34 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) didn't practice for the sixth straight day Friday, Oct. 17. Head coach Jim Caldwell isn't ruling him out for Week 7 against the New Orleans Saints, but he also didn't make it sound like Johnson would play, either. Johnson said earlier this week that he sees no reason to rush back to the field until he's completely healthy. The team will lean heavily on WRs Golden Tate, Corey Fuller and Jeremy Ross, along with RBs Joique Bell and Reggie Bush if Johnson doesn't play again.

Fantasy Tip: It's highly unlikely that we see Megatron play against the Saints. Avoid him everywhere. Tate's price ($6,300; 12.6% of cap) has gone up with Johnson hobbled, but he could still return a profit against a weak New Orleans defense.

Lions | Calvin Johnson out today

Sun, 12 Oct 2014 08:28:27 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) will not play Sunday, Oct. 12.

Lions | Calvin Johnson may miss time

Mon, 06 Oct 2014 07:57:17 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) could miss a week or two after he aggravated his ankle injury in Week 5 Sunday, Oct. 5.

Fantasy Tip: Golden Tate may have it a little rough for a couple of weeks as defenses will likely shift their focus to him. Keep an eye on Megatron's status, but he clearly isn't a good option on FantasyScore right now until he's healthy.

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate (hamstring) was limited in practice for the second straight day Friday, Oct. 3, and is probable for Week 5 against the Buffalo Bills.

Fantasy Tip: Tate will play in this game. With Calvin Johnson (ankle) a questionable, Tate could once again put up big numbers this weekend. He's cheap at FantasyScore, too, making it more intriguing.

Thu, 02 Oct 2014 14:34:47 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate (hamstring) was listed as a limited participant on the practice report Thursday, Oct. 2.

Fantasy Tip: It's unclear how serious Tate's injury is, so keep an eye on his status tomorrow. Tate had his best game of the year last week (eight catches for 116 yards) with Calvin Johnson limited. That may be the case again versus the Buffalo Bills in Week 5, making Tate intriguing once again at FantasyScore, assuming he's healthy.

Lions | Calvin Johnson excited to face Jets

Wed, 24 Sep 2014 13:07:41 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson is licking his chops as he prepares to face the New York Jets in Week 4. "Single coverage high" is the scheme that New York used often against the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears, and it led to big games for those teams' receivers. The Jets have been thin at cornerback due to injuries early this year. Johnson is fourth in the league in receiving yards (329) this year, and he has five catches and two touchdowns of 20 yards or more. If the Jets decide to double team Johnson, WR Golden Tate, who has 16 catches for 201 yards, could benefit. Johnson expects the Jets to play him man to man, because they love to blitz.

Fantasy Tip: Megatron is the most expensive receiver at FantasyScore this week ($8,900; 17.8% of cap), but he may still be a valuable option against the Jets, especially after a down week in Week 3.

Lions | Golden Tate expects big year

Tue, 26 Aug 2014 19:59:38 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate said he believes his numbers can go up this year despite moving from the top option in Seattle to the No. 2 option in Detroit. "I think my numbers can be way better in this offense naturally how it's set up," Tate said. "I was coming from, you gotta think I was in the toughest division with the 49ers, Rams and Cardinals, defensively, with a run-heavy offense and now I'm going to a pass-happy offense where I'm on the same team as the best player in the league, one of the best players in the league who is going to draw a lot of attention, a lot of double coverage, which is going to leave me with a lot of single coverage with a lot of No. 2 and No. 3 cornerbacks."

Fantasy Tip: Tate spelled out the reasons why fantasy owners should be intrigued about his potential this year. The Lions have been looking for a reliable complement for Calvin Johnson for years, and Tate should fil the void. A career year seems inevitable, and fantasy owners should feel comfortable drafting him as a WR3.

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate (shoulder) was removed from the Physically Unable to Perform list Monday, July 28, and he is expected to take part in the team's first training camp practice later in the day. Tate missed part of the team's spring workouts with a shoulder injury and said his shoulder was "just a little soreness" in June.

Fantasy Tip: Tate should be fine for preseason and for Week 1 of the regular season if he doesn't have any setbacks. Tate's new home gives him plenty of upside as the complement to Calvin Johnson. He's a great option to have as a WR3.

Lions | Goldent Tate confident in blocking ability

Thu, 17 Jul 2014 15:30:55 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate knows he can block. Tate said blocking is just as important as catching the ball and even went as far as to say it's not that challenging.

Fantasy Tip: As much as Tate takes pride in his blocking, he's also a quality fantasy wide receiver. He recently said he expects to catch more passes this year, which is definitely achievable in Detroit's potent offense. Consider Tate a high-end WR3 to low-end WR2 in standard leagues this year.

Lions | Golden Tate expects more receptions

Mon, 14 Jul 2014 13:45:01 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate said he expects to catch more passes in 2014 than he did last season because opponents will be focusing on trying to cover WR Calvin Johnson. "I think if I can stay healthy ... it's going to be fun," Tate said. "I have a chance to catch a ton more balls. I'm going to see a lot of single coverage. I'm probably going to see a lot of No. 2 and No. 3 cornerbacks because everyone's going to be on No. 81."

Fantasy Tip: Tate should have a solid role in the passing game this season, but the team likely will spread the ball around because of the weapons they have on offense. Owners should consider Tate as a No. 3 wide receiver with the chance to become a No. 2 fantasy wide receiver.
