Yankees | Ivan Nova struggling with sinker

Tue, 31 May 2016 04:01:43 -0700

New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova allowed four runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out four over six innings in a loss to the Toronto Blue Jays Monday, May 30, and he said he has been having trouble keeping his sinker down in the zone. After allowing 17 fly balls in his first three starts, he has allowed 21 in his last two, both losses.

Fantasy Tip: Both of Nova's bad outings have come against Toronto, so the opponent could have something to do with it. His value is limited to AL-only leagues.

Yankees | Ivan Nova less than super in loss

Wed, 25 May 2016 21:02:24 -0700

New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova took the loss against the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday, May 25. He allowed four runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings and struck out eight. It was his first loss in four starts since joining the rotation earlier in May.

Fantasy Tip: Despite the loss there were some silver linings for Nova. He worked deeper into the game and threw a season-high 107 pitches, and the eight strikeouts matched his total from his first three starts combined. While he was never a big strikeout arm, Nova could up his fantasy profile by getting closer to his career mark of 6.57 K/9 as opposed to this year's 4.45 mark.

Yankees | Ivan Nova wins again

Fri, 20 May 2016 05:01:36 -0700

New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova picked up his second win since moving into the starting rotation Thursday, May 19. The Yankees beat the Oakland Athletics, 4-1, as Nova pitched six innings, threw just 62 pitches, had three strikeouts and lowered his ERA to 1.65 in three starts.

Fantasy Tip: Nova has been very effective in place of CC Sabathia, and the team is climbing the American League East standings. So what is a manager to do? Joe Girardi has a dilemma on his hands. Nova has increased value because he can be used as a relief pitcher in fantasy lineups, even though he now starts. Keep him in your lineup as long as he stays in the rotation, but keep in mind Nova will lose value if removed.

Yankees | CC Sabathia won't be back soon

Fri, 06 May 2016 16:14:09 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia (groin) is likely to be out longer than 15 days, according to manager Joe Girardi. "I think the last time he had this, he was out about three weeks," Girardi said. "I think you feel probably pretty fortunate if you could get him then." SP Ivan Nova will replace Sabathia in the rotation, according to Girardi. Nova will start against the Kansas City Royals Monday, May 9.

Fantasy Tip: It's unfortunate for Sabathia after his best outing -- a seven-inning shutout -- came in his last start against the Orioles. Consider dropping him for better options in deep mixed leagues. Nova hasn't pitched well in relief (5.14 ERA in 14 innings) and is a flier in AL-only formats. It wouldn't be wise to buy low on Nova in daily affairs for his first start Monday.

Yankees | Ivan Nova logs first-career save

Wed, 06 Apr 2016 22:38:14 -0700

New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova allowed a run and four hits in the final four innings Wednesday, April 6, against the Houston Astros for his first-career save and first relief appearance since June 29, 2013.

Fantasy Tip: Nova was solid in the spring, but he was the odd-man out in a numbers game. He was also very sharp in this opportunity, and he will likely be the first start summoned if and when an injury occurs to one of the team's first five starters.

Yankees | Joe Girardi undecided on fifth starter

Thu, 31 Mar 2016 12:45:36 -0700

New York Yankees SPs CC Sabathia and Ivan Nova are still competing to be the fifth starter in the rotation. Manager Joe Girardi said he still has not made a decision Thursday, March 31.

Fantasy Tip: Neither pitcher is carrying significant fantasy value. Nova posted a 5.07 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP through 17 starts last season, and Sabathia owns a 4.81 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP through his past 69 starts over the last three years. You'll want to avoid both starters outside of cavernous mixed and AL-only formats, and even in those deep leagues, Nova and Sabathia are low-end options.

Yankees | Yanks rotation decision could linger

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 15:08:43 -0700

With New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova firing an impressive spring start Wednesday, March 30, manager Joe Girardi said a decision on the team's fifth starter could take a little while longer to decide. Nova has been competing with SP CC Sabathia. "He threw really well," Girardi said of Nova, who allowed only an infield single in the second and a soft line single in the third and lowered his spring ERA to 4.13 from 5.50. "We've got to go back and have some serious discussions about what's next and what do we do here?"

Fantasy Tip: It seemed like a foregone conclusion yesterday that Sabathia would win the job, mainly because of his experience. But now it's uncertain. Sabathia is still likely to get the nod, but he'll have a short leash. Injuries and poor performance the last few seasons show Sabathia's sharp decline from ace territory. He's nothing more than a final-round flier in cavernous mixed leagues.

Yankees | Ivan Nova spins six scoreless innings

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 11:47:04 -0700

New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova pitched six scoreless innings during his Grapefruit League start Wednesday, March 30, and manager Joe Girardi said the battle for the fifth starter in the rotation still has not been finalized.

Fantasy Tip: Nova posted a 5.07 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP through 17 starts last season, and he has never been much of a strikeout artist with a career 6.7 K/9, so his fantasy value is limited. He is battling CC Sabathia for the fifth-starter job, but outside of cavernous mixed and AL-only formats, it isn't a fight worth tracking. Stay tuned for updates, but even in deep formats, you'll want to keep expectations in check with Nova.

Yankees | CC Sabathia the default starter

Tue, 29 Mar 2016 15:16:20 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia gave up two earned runs on three hits in five innings of a rain-shortened spring game Tuesday, March 29, and appears to have won the fifth starting job over SPs Ivan Nova and Bryan Mitchell. Manager Joe Girardi said it was "his best outing of the spring." Girardi said it would be too tough to tell Sabathia he'd be demoted to the bullpen after 15 seasons.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia and Nova have near identical numbers this spring, with neither that impressive, but Mitchell had stellar numbers. The Yanks are going with experience and the guy with the biggest payroll number. That doesn't necessarily mean he's the best option for fantasy owners. Sabathia had a promising finish to 2015, but it's fair to wonder how much he has left in the tank. He's mainly an AL option these days.

Yankees | Ivan Nova misses an opportunity

Fri, 25 Mar 2016 15:09:41 -0700

New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova allowed three home runs in 4 2/3 innings against the Baltimore Orioles Friday, March 25, in Grapefruit League action.

Fantasy Tip: With CC Sabathia close to being demoted to the bullpen in the race for the fifth starter competition, Nova did himself no favors in an effort to win the job Friday. Nova gives up way too many home runs and doesn't strike out enough to be considered in mixed leagues even if he wins a rotation spot.
