Colorado Rockies SP Juan Nicasio has not lasted past the sixth inning in his past four starts and has a 5.27 ERA and a rate of 10.6 hits per nine innings. There has not been much talk of moving Nicasio to the bullpen, but SP Jhoulys Chacin is near the end of his rehab and could force the issue.

Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss elected to go with SP Juan Nicasio for the home opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks Friday, April 4, rather than SP Franklin Morales, because Nicasio's experience at Coors Field is fresher. "More than anything, Juan has pitched a lot and made a lot of starts in our park," Weiss said Tuesday, April 1. "Frankie did at one time, but it's been a while. I'd rather Frankie's first start be on the road before we get back there in all the hoopla of opening day and throw that on top of being with a new club. Juan was the best choice."

Colorado Rockies SP Juan Nicasio has gained his top-end velocity in the offseason while pitching in the Dominican Republic and due to the fact that he wasn't stuck rehabbing all winter. "I have power," Nicasio said. "I hit 98, 97 (mph). The lowest it was last year was 88 or 89, I think. You're going to see." However, SPs Franklin Morales, Jordan Lyles and Christian Friedrich are all fighting this spring to take away Nicasio's rotation spot.
Nicasio developed the reflex of pulling back his head at the end of his delivery ever since he was struck by a line drive that fractured his skull in August of 2011, and it led to a lack of finish to his fastball and robbed him of downward movement on his offspeed offerings. He also dealt with a knee injury for much of last season.

Colorado Rockies SP Juan Nicasio said Monday, Feb. 17, that he is open to wearing a padded cap, which is available from Major League Baseball this season. He suffered a fractured skull and broken neck in 2011 when he was struck by a line drive. He said he wants to test the padded cap in spring training games.

Colorado Rockies P Franklin Morales heads to spring training with hopes of winning a spot in the team's rotation. He is part of a group trying to unseat SP Juan Nicasio as the team's fifth starter. "I know what I can do, and right now, I have my confidence back," Morales said. "What I need to do is make my pitches and throw the ball down and see what happens."
Fantasy Tip: Morales was a starter until 2009, but has just 25 starts in 195 big league appearances. Should he win the fifth starter job for the Rockies, his fantasy appeal would still be limited to deeper NL-only formats.

The Colorado Rockies avoided arbitration with SP Juan Nicasio Friday, Jan. 17, by agreeing to a one-year, $2.025 million deal.

Colorado Rockies SPs Drew Pomeranz and Juan Nicasio will work Monday, July 22, and Tuesday, July 23, against the Miami Marlins.
Fantasy Tip: If your head-to-head fantasy leagues uses the three-day shortened week after the All-Star break, avoid Pomeranz and Nicasio. The good news is that both pitchers, barring any weather interruptions, will be two-start pitchers in the scoring period starting July 22.

Colorado Rockies SP Juan Nicasio was scratched from his Wednesday, July 10, start for Triple-A Colorado Spring, putting him in line to start on Friday, July 12, in place of SP Roy Oswalt (hamstring).
Fantasy Tip: Nicasio looks like the guys, but he has simply been too hittable to be considered for fantasy purposes, despite good ratios.

The Colorado Rockies placed SP Roy Oswalt (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list Monday, July 8.
Fantasy Tip: This was one of the fears that fantasy owners likely had if they were hesitant to own Oswalt. It's unclear who will replace him in the rotation, but Jeff Francis and Juan Nicasio are likely the best options.
