Dodgers | Kenley Jansen throwing too hard?

Fri, 11 Apr 2014 10:06:30 -0700

Despite a rough start to the season, Los Angeles Dodgers RP Kenley Jansen is throwing three to five mph harder than he was last year. That type of velocity may be causing his late-breaking cutter to break too late. Another potential reason for Jansen being hit hard in the early going is that he had few spring outings than normal because the Dodgers started the season early.

Fantasy Tip: Jansen's owners shouldn't be too worried so early in the season, especially since he isn't the only closer to scuffle early in 2014. The fact that he's throwing hard means he's completely healthy, which is about all you need to know right now.

Dodgers | Brian Wilson to join team

Mon, 19 Aug 2013 10:45:08 -0700

The Los Angeles Dodgers will activate RP Brian Wilson onto the active roster Monday, Aug. 19.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson has done everything the team asked of him in the minors to prove he's healthy. He has his velocity back and has looked good. However, his fantasy impact will be very minimal, since he has virtually no shot at saves with Kenley Jansen firmly locked into that role.

Dodgers | Brian Wilson signs

Tue, 30 Jul 2013 12:02:54 -0700

The Los Angeles Dodgers signed free-agent RP Brian Wilson (Giants) to an undisclosed deal Tuesday, July 30, according to a source. He will start out in the minors.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson will have to prove he's healthy and effective in the minors before they bring him up, much like they did with Carlos Marmol. The Dodgers have Kenley Jansen locked down in the ninth inning, so if Wilson makes to Hollywood, he'll most likely be serving in some sort of setup role, limiting his fantasy value to mainly NL-only leagues.

Dodgers | Carlos Marmol set for middle relief

Tue, 23 Jul 2013 15:17:40 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers RP Carlos Marmol is likely to pitch in middle relief for the team. He allowed two home runs in three innings with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga and tossed two scoreless innings with Double-A Chattanooga down on the farm. He went 2-4 with a 5.86 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 21 games for the Chicago Cubs earlier this year.

Fantasy Tip: The Blue are set with Kenley Jansen as their closer. Marmol won't threaten for the closer role at any point for the rest of the season and probably won't be an option to pitch meaningful late innings, either. He shouldn't be considered in fantasy circles.

Dodgers | Brandon League demoted in 'pen

Thu, 27 Jun 2013 13:29:09 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers RP Brandon League won't be trusted in late-inning situations in close games anymore, according to manager Don Mattingly. RP Ronald Belisario will now be the eighth-inning setup man to RP Kenley Jansen, and the team will mix and match in the seventh inning between RPs Paco Rodriguez and Peter Moylan. League will be used in low-pressure situations to "start piecing him back together." The Dodgers think League is opening up his shoulder too soon in his delivery, which makes it easier for opponents to see his pitches.

Fantasy Tip: If he corrects his mechanical flaws, League could move back to important late-inning work, but he has virtually no shot at unseating Jansen as the closer again. Feel free to drop League in all formats.

Dodgers | Kenley Jansen rested

Wed, 26 Jun 2013 11:41:02 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers RP Kenley Jansen was rested against the San Francisco Giants in a save situation Tuesday, June 25, because he had pitched in three straight games. RP Brandon League was brought in for the save, but he had to be pulled after allowing three hits and two runs. RP Paco Rodriguez eventually came on to record the save, his first of the year.

Fantasy Tip: League didn't help his chances at being considered again for the closer role if Jansen struggles. It doesn't appear like he'll have a shot anytime soon at usurping Jansen, so there's no reason to hold onto League outside of NL-only formats.

Dodgers | Kenley Jansen named closer

Tue, 11 Jun 2013 16:10:02 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly has named Kenley Jansen closer.

Fantasy Tip: He deposes Brandon League, who can be dropped in most leagues. Jansen has the skills to hold the gig for the rest of the season and should be added everywhere.

Dodgers | Don Mattingly explains use of Kenley Jansen

Wed, 15 May 2013 15:26:28 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers RP Kenley Jansen came in for the save against the Washington Nationals Tuesday, May 14. "In that game, I had to go with the guy who's throwing the ball best; as much as anything he's been throwing the ball better than anybody," said manager Don Mattingly. RP Brandon League was never warmed up in the game, but Mattingly refused to say that Jansen is the new closer.

Fantasy Tip: We already told you that Jansen should be owned in all leagues, and this is why. It's likely that League is still Mattingly's closer, for now, but Jansen is pitching better and could take the ninth-inning duties from League if he continues to struggle.
