Cardinals | Jon Jay hitting leadoff

Tue, 28 Apr 2015 13:50:04 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Jon Jay is hitting in the leadoff spot Tuesday, April 28, against the Philadelphia Phillies. 3B Matt Carpenter, who traditionally has hit first, is now second.

Fantasy Tip: Jay ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) has a .233 batting average and isn't much of a base-stealer, but the Cardinals have a two-game losing streak so this might be a lineup shakeup. Jay doesn't hit for much average or power so you may want to look for better options.

Fantasy Tip: Jay ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) probably is receiving a rest and should return to the lineup for the next game. Peter Bourjos ($1,900, 3.8% of cap) will start in center field but is not a must-start option for owners on FantasyScore.

Cardinals | Jon Jay made his spring debut

Fri, 20 Mar 2015 16:47:31 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Jon Jay (wrist) made his Grapefruit League debut Friday, March 20. Jay went 1-for-3 and stated he "felt good." His goal is to be ready for opening day and feels he has enough time to get ready.

Fantasy Tip: Jay hit .303 last season, but his playing time could have a chunk taken out of it this year with the addition of Jason Heyward to the outfield. Right-handed outfielders Peter Bourjos and Randal Grichuk could be platoon partners in center field for the left-handed Jay. The unclear playing time situation makes him best left undrafted in mixed leagues.

Cardinals | Jon Jay to play Friday

Thu, 19 Mar 2015 10:58:17 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Jon Jay (wrist) is slated to make his Grapefruit League debut Friday, March 20, after he took 13 at-bats in a simulated game Wednesday, March 18.

Fantasy Tip: Jay is a candidate to platoon in center field with either Randal Grichuk or Peter Bourjos this year, but the fact that Jay has hit very well against lefties may give him the leg up. Because of his uncertain playing time, though, Jay is best left to NL-only owners.

Cardinals | Jon Jay slowly progressing

Fri, 06 Mar 2015 12:22:51 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals OF Jon Jay (wrist) continues to build up the strength in his left wrist following an offseason procedure. He has not appeared in a spring training game yet, but maintains the goal remains returning for opening day.

Fantasy Tip: Expect Jay to be starting in center field opening day. He is a solid source of runs and has a career .295 batting average. He is a viable option late in drafts, if those are category needs. Continue to check back for updates on Jay's recovery.

Cardinals | No platoon for Jason Heyward

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 11:48:17 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals OF Jason Heyward hasn't been mentioned in a platoon in right field, even though he's hit just .210 with a .293 on-base percentage and .325 slugging percentage against left-handed pitchers in 283 plate appearances in the last two seasons. The Cardinals think he can turns things around and be successful against lefties. OFs Randal Grichuk and Peter Bourjos will likely have to wait their turn for playing time, since OF Jon Jay has been very successful against left-handers in his career.

Fantasy Tip: Heyward presents an excellent buying opportunity in fantasy drafts this year, especially since he's moving to a much better lineup in St. Louis. The fact that he won't be in a platoon situation makes him an even better purchase. Grichuk is likely to see more playing time than Bourjos this year if Jay or Heyward falter, but he's probably not worth anything more than a late-round flier in deep mixed leagues.
